We managed to get to St Petersburg okay after a small hiccup. Since the last blog i went and bought some new jeans as i somehow lost some trousers in Poland (as you do). Have since tried them on and they don't fit so back down to just 3 pairs again. Anyway, we spent the day mulling around the station and shopping centre and decided at 6pm to check on our train which was set to leave at 8.10pm. Only then do we realise that we need to be at a different station. On the other side of Moscow. Nobody explained this to us, unless they probably did but we didn't know what they were saying. Luckily a helpful man directed us to the metro and pointed out the station we needed. The metro looked really ... read more

I'm putting these blogs together as i fear the next few days will be beyond dull. Day 16 - 16/09/08. Got up early in L'viv to get to the station as we hadn't sorted out any train times. Have definitely decided to get to St Petersburg as soon as possible so no choice but to get trains straight through now. Got to the station early but train out to Kiev is not until 8pm. No other news, we spent the day sitting here. We did sit in different seats from time to time and the toilets here are just a hole in the ground so i was watching what i ate. Also, i left my tent and old maps at the hotel to save more weight as we won't need them (hopefully). May have to buy ... read more

Hello!!! In L'viv now waiting for a train to Kiev. It's about midday here and train is not until 8pm. We left Krakow 2 days ago now. Missed the train we had booked on after a mix up involving me and Adelle getting a bit lost when we split up whilst Nance went and bought new luggage. At the time for some reason it was really demoralising. I felt worse than when we lost the car and when we couldn't find anywhere to stay in Slovakia. I think it was because this time it was in our control. Still, in the end it didnt matter, got a train only half hour later. However, this would now involve changing over near the Ukrainian border. We stopped in a small Polish town called Pryzemysl. Nothing here, bit of ... read more

After the night on the streets in Slovakia we got our tickets to Krakow for midday and then went for a Mcdonalds at 7am. They don't do breakfasts over here so i had to have 2 x cheeseburgers and chips. Eating this so early in the morn + no sleep forced me to have a nap on a park bench for a bit. After accidently buying sparkling water 3 times at the station we finally left Kocise and Slovakia after our train got delayed for a bit. It was only by 10minutes but that seemed an age. I hardly slept on the train even though it was a 6 hour journey. The Polish hills looked amazing though, best scenes from a train window so far! We arrived in Krakow in the early evening at what seemed ... read more

September the 10th by now. We awoke in Miskolc, had breakfast (scrambled egg - soon regretted that) then found out it wasnt free. We missed our train to Kocise in Slovakia by 30mins so had to wait until 3pm. No bother, i decided to send home my massive sleeping bag. So i went to the Hungarian post but they were useless and didnt bother to try and speak english for me. But then some Hungarian guy came up and explained the postoffice was rubbish, that id be lucky to find a box to send my bag in and then spent 20mins of what turned out to be his lunch break from a neary shop to help me translate what i wanted and send my bag home. He even put his own address as from where it ... read more

More than ready to move on after 2days in one place. We are supposed to be travelling and you cant do that if you stay still. Breakfast was a cold sausage casserole on the train, where we washed up the mess tins in the toilets. Then before long it was Budapest. The part we arrived in was literally a building site. And very hot again. Nonetheless, after an age trying to get some local currency we arrive at our hostel. Yes, a bed again. We then decided to wander back into the city to see what we could find. Couldnt work out how to pay for trams so decided on wandering in. We wandered and wandered and wandered. Saw loads of the city but couldnt find a tourist info place. All we found was a small ... read more

Ok, so its been a while, im now in Slovakia so ive got a lot of filling in to do. After the campsite in Zurich, we went back to the station, managed to get rid of our luggage for the day and stepped out in the Swiss sunshine to explore Zurich. Really we were just passing time until we could get our train to Vienna. But Zurich is fantastic. Its a really clean place with apparently Europes largest clock (although we think we found it and it wasn§t actually that big - someone could easily make bigger). The day before had been drizzly so we had dismissed it as just another city. But today, 25degrees and sunny, it looked great. Ive already made a mental note of it being one of the places to re=visit in ... read more

Now we are without wheels we have to make do with the route that is available. We have about 6 road maps... but no train ones. So once back at Luxembourg station it became clear we had to go to Zurich!!! It cost 64euros though and turnd out to be a 4hour trip. Really should have bought some food or drink before getting on. We quickly realised that if we carry on like this we'd travel at day and sleep at night. That would make for a boring blog! I'd have to start making things up. So once we arrived in Zurich we booked an overnight train for the next evening to Vienna! Then we got a cab to a campsite, where the routine of it raining everynight continued... so we had to spend the night ... read more

Day 3 ends with us leaving Ciney (finally) and getting our first train of the trip. Really tired at this point as i didn't sleep the first night and the second night was spent in the car...on a main road. So all i remember looking back was it was a double decker train...my first one!!! I guess its like a normal train, but with another level. The journey to Luxembourg was short and pleasant and we decide to stay in a hostel (my first ever hostel) in Diekirch - part of the OLd Town of Luxembourg City. I think i was spoilt at this hostel as it was very clean and pleasant. We grabbed a 6bed dorm and went into town to what seemed like the ONLY bar in Luxembourg. As we were so shattered we ... read more

Last time i wrote we were set to head on to Brussels and then decided to drive on down to Luxembourg where we heard there are good campsites. I got to drive the car for the first time that morning. Later that day, after leaving Brussels - about 45 mins into our journey, the car started overheating. Problem is we were flying along the motorway and you can't really tell until the front of the car is engulfed in smoke. We stopped on the hard shoulder and let it cool for almost an hour, before deciding it was probably the waterpump or the thermostat that was causing us problems. So we headed for the nearest town (Achene) which was only 1km away. This took us over an hour! Basically if we let the car cool for ... read more
