Valley of the Kings

After a delicious breakfast of pancakes banana honey onboard the felucca it was time to say farewell to our hosts and head off to our next destination. Luxor the ancient Egyptian town known as Thebes holds 22 of the worlds monuments including highlights like Karnak Temple the worlds largest temple complex and Valley of the Kings tombs of the ancient Kings Queens and Nobles.
Jewel of the Nile

As the sleeper train pulled into the busy Cairo station I had flashbacks of the filthy overnight trains in Vietnam. We were all pleasantly surprised once inboard when Jess and I were shown to our private two bed cabin complete with a dining table sink and lamps. This was certainly a step up from trains in Asia and everyone in the group was running from room to room excited about how luxuriou

Drive like an Egyptian

It was another early departure to make the 10 hour drive from Dahab to Cairo. Due to the same security risks on the Sinai our route had to be changed adding an additional three hours to the drive. As we chugged along slowly around the winding mountainous roads the smell of burning fuel blew through the bus and we came to a sudden holt. I had to laugh we had only been on the road for about 30

On the Red Sea

As we debarked from the Ferry into the Arab Republic of Egypt chaos erupted. Jordan has been so organised and orderly that Egypt came as quite a shock. For customs immigration reasons our Jordanian leader was not with us for the journey across to Egypt and we were instructed that our new tour leader would meet us as we got off the ferry. As we entered the busy customs hall there was no one ther

Being Lawrence of Arabia

Today we ventured across the red sand sea to visit Wadi Rum. Thamodians pre Nabatians are Bedouin and Nomadic tribes who crossed over from Saudi Arabia roaming the desert in search of water and pasture. Eventually the Thamodians settled on Petra and built the Pink City. A 4 hour jeep tour took us through some spectacular scenery and we visited many sites said to have been significant to Lawren

The Last Crusade

It was an early departure to start our Jordanian adventure outside of the capital. First stop was Mt Nebo where Moses is said to have seen the promised land for the first time. Lucky for us it was a clear day so we had views all the way to Israel. Our British travel companion got her way in the end and a stop to see St George Church in Madaba was included in our itinerary. The church boosts a m

Unforgettable India

The overnight train took us to Varanasi one of the worlds oldest cities. Varanasi is the ultimate destinations for hindus and the city is full of temples shrines and devotees. After almost 10 days in rural locations Varanasi came as quite a shock. It is louder busier and dirtier than any other Indian city I have visited but at the same time there is a vibrance to the city that is not equalled

After leaving Alipura Place we headed to Khajuraho infamous for it's 1000 year old temples deplicting the Kama Sutra. They say it is Khajuraho's remoteness that saved the temples from foreign invaders over the centuries. Unfortunate for me I was still not well from the previous night and spent most of the day in bed sleeping it off. The following day we ventured deep into Madhya Pradesh's jungle

A short drive took us to our next destination Alipura where we were treated to another special experience of staying at Alipura Palace. The Royal Family still live in the Palace and we were lucky enough to meet the KingAfter a nice lunch we headed off on a village walk to meet the locals and see everyday Alipura life. It is always a great experience to spend time in rural villages but so sad t

On the banks of the Betwa

We arrived to the picturesque town of Orccha to see a completely different side to India that I have experienced so far. Situated on the banks of the Betwa River Orchha is still as it was centuries ago. There is a high abundance of palaces and temples in the Bundlekhand region as it used to be the centre for the Bundelas Rajput Clan.We spent our time here visiting the Palace and the many temp

Well the overnight train from Pushkar wasn't half as bad as I was expecting. It was warm comfortable and quite clean I was relieved the first experience went so well as I have a few more to go in the next half of my tripThe overnight train took us back to Delhi where my group and I said our goodbyes. I was heading straight to another hotel to meet the girls and our Unforgettable India group

We headed to Pushkar for the last stop on our Classic Rajasthan 2 week trip. As much fun as I have had on this half of my Indian adventure I'm excited to get back to Delhi to meet up with the girls Annelisa Jess from work and my cousin Veronica for our last 2 weeks. With India's only Brahma temple and holy lake Pushkar is a major destination for pilgrims and sadhus holy men from all over

Romantic Udaipur

Udaipur certainly lived up to its reputation of being India's most romantic city White marble palaces the lake rooftop restaurants and cafes and the small winding cobble stoned streets...divine The city is a centre for artists dancers and musicians and lets not forget backpackers I haven't seen too many westerners since I arrived in India almost two weeks ago but Udaipur is apparently the

I should mention here that it was actually luxury camping with ensuites and all My kind of camping As we were pretty much in the middle of no where

We travelled through villages and farmlands to get to the small town of Bundi in a remote part of rural Rajasthan. Bundi was a perfect town to explore on foot with the streets markets full of energy colour and every day Rajasthani life. We spent the day visiting the Palace and it's beautiful murals stepwells and the endless bazzars. Our stay in Bundi was far to short but a welcome change o

After Agra we headed to Jaipur otherwise known as The Pink City. Honestly I hadn't heard that many great reviews about Jaipur so was pleasantly surprised to find I really enjoyed my time there. We joined the locals for a Bollywood film at the Raj Mandir Asia's best cinema and spent our time discovering the old city and it's many fine fabrics and jewels. The only downside of my time in Jaipur w
