Mahler's The Man - From: "What is THAT?"
Hi Jen Yes it is interesting that someone has chosen to put him up- no comments or artistic merit attached to it. It's not really a tag as such either, it seems that someone has just discovered him and wants to share. Isn't that nice. The Slovakia, Hungary and Slovinia blogs are yet to come. It's a matter of when I get the chance when I am away. Internet access is not always possible or convenient. That last lot you got in a lot was when I was in Ljubiljana and the internet was at the hostel and was free! Chhers, Pedallingpete

"What is THAT" - From: "What is THAT?"
The The Haus der Musik sounds like a fantastic experience. Mahler seems to be quite the man of the moment for some reason. He has been played a lot on ABC Classic FM. Peter might be interested to hear that somebody has been spray painting "Gustav Mahler" around Toronto for some reason. I have found a photo (link below). It isn't particularly inspiring or artistic as far as graffiti goes, but quite curious. Try this link for a picture (Hope I've done it right). http://www.flickr.com/photos/davetill/sets/72157602339434368/ I'd love to hear about your experiences in Slovakia and Hungary, but assume you couldn't post online from there? I spent a day going through Slovakia in 1998 and was thoroughly intrigued by it. I would love to go back, but for now, will have to live vicariously through your adventures. I imagine it would be wonderful cycling country.

Hi Phil Great to hear from you and that you are enjoying the blog. I actually saw that the election was called at about the same time as it was announced on CNN given the time difference between here & Oz. I'm suggesting to everyone I know to vote Green in the Upper House. Labour & Liberal are getting too much the same, and neither is doing enough about climate change. Assuming Labour gets in this will not be able to regain enough upper house seats to make effective changes as Liberal will block things. 31degrees ! While it is still sunny here it is pretty chilly in the morning with any breeze. Cheers Peter

Hi Silvana. Yes we could take photos together. You would love it of course and the cycling would come to you over the days and not be hard work. It's funny though, for me this is not an adventure as there are so many others doing it and it's all pretty easy. Not that I'm complaining. I think my days at turning up at remote villages with 'the natives' are over- on a bicycle, anyway. Love Pete

Hello form Home - From: I enjoyed having a long luxurious bath
Peter, I am playing some music Mozart may have written in Vienna. I liked the autumnal photos of the Danube. Can we change the Blue Danube Waltz to the Brown Danube Waltz? Strauss would not be happy about his river. The blueness would have come from the clarity of the water. Let’s not think about what turns it brown. Adelaide would make a fabulous bike city. We need to get rid of Harbo first, and a Labor gov. that promised to integrate and expand the bike network, and in office it was one of the first promises they broke. I am so glad you are enjoying your holiday. Many people have commented on your blog. Happy pedaling. James & the fish.

Photo Effects- "no go" for the purist - From: Some photos to enjoy
Thanks for your comments. Obviously I don't see it that way. I just see it as another medium. I love the way the colours merge and I see a photo in another way. It would only "ruin them" if I didn't have the original. I don't see any difference to altering a photo by cropping out something, changing an exposure to get an effect, or using a different speed film etc. It's all fun.

Poor Marty & the Affluent Gringo - From: The Ausangate circuit - Martin the wonder guide and the bastard with the tent
Thanks for your comments Shannon. It's been fun going through my old trip again from 1999 to put it up here. The memories are still alive & well. I felt that the Booking Co was well and truly responsible for their deceit and for such a hopeless tent. The conditions out there are fairly extreme and it was close to negligence that could have turned out badly. As for Martin not having a tent, he was extremely poor and a lovely man. I would have left him the tent if it was mine.

this sounds like a real adventure. I hate feeling like I can't communicate - you mentioned not having enough vocab - especially when things seem strange or like some mistake has been made, not being able to clear it up. Martin probably does this job all the time, but I can't believe he didn't have his own tent.

One way to get around the filthy buses you mentioned is to make your bookings thru ticketvala.com which offers good quality bus services primarily between Gujarat and Maharashtra locations. Cribber? - From: “Cunflacks- no”.
What a shame that you are not as welcoming as the overwhelming majority of people I met including those in Bhuj. A few points for you to consider in response to your offensive comments: 1. I don't expect cornflakes in Bhuj. I go to India because it isn't the same as home. I admit that I don't always want Indian food at every meal and that if Cornflakes is on the menu I might choose that. I only asked for cronflakes BECAUSE it was on the menu. I love Indian food and in fact cook it at home. 2.I am not from America. I am Australian. 3.I know that English is not the native language of India. My understanding is that there is no one common language across all of India and that the constitution recognizes 18 official languages, including English. There are over 1600 minor languages and dialects listed in the census. I do my best when I travel in India and generally get by without offending anyone. 4. The point of my attempt at being humorous as a result of my lack of local language was not that I needed Cornfakes but that I needed to know what the hotel (which is also catering for Tourists) could provide- Indian or western food, it didn't matter. The main fault of the hotel was that the menu was not readily available as it usually was and that it was in English only. It also needed to be in Hindi given that the person responsible to provide food to guests could only speak his native language be that Gujurati, Hindi or whatever. I will continue to visit you amazing country (I have been there 3 times). I encourage you to be as welcoming as the people I have come across in my travels and to not attempt to talk for the rest of the nation. I appreciate that you are rightly proud of your country.

Cornflakes in Bhuj? - From: “Cunflacks- no”.
Expecting Cornflakes in Bhuj is asking for too much dont you think? Would you get chapatis in a small remote village / town in America? Didn't you know English is not the native language of Indians? What do you expect, everybody to greet you in fluent English? Get real man and better still stay in your home country. We don't want cribbers like you in our country.

Limca? - From: Drinks prior to Dinner were served in the African Room....
Hi Annie Thanks for newsy Email. Sorry to hear about Wayne. It seems to get them all in the end still. I'll get in contact with Jane when I get back. I haven't heard from either of the boys so will write to them now. The internet takes so long and often not available where I am or the server goes down, or the enter key gets stuck, or there are letters missing on the keyboard etc. I am currently in Dui, which is a small island off the Gujarat coast where I am having some R&R, beer and beach before the 24hr slog to Mumbai for the flight. India is still much the same as we saw it but things have improved...not as much apparent poverty, gross beggars, frustrations of getting a ticket on the train system etc. They still sell Limca, although I am getting through a huge amount of bottled water, lime sodas and now in Dui a beer at dusk overlooking the beach. Save up, if Jack doesnt want to go, go without him! - the Indians are as charming and accepting as ever. It's cheap enough to get a driver, stay in selected areas for a longer stay and save the money you would be spending at home. Most of the time I spend less than $8-10 a night for accomodation & $2 for a full meal and a drink. The bus fare for a 24hr trip is about $15. Love Pete

Hi Pete, So glad you decided to have a night in the palace. Well worth it. I have a case of the green-eyed-monster. Did the "boy" bring the Limca? Some sad news this end. Wayne died a couple of weeks ago. Jane had a beautiful gathering at her place. Harry the dog had his say as Bella did for John. It was even acknowledged that Bella had created a precedent. My cousin Heather's husband died suddenly last week too, so we have had Jane and John staying, with Simon making a mercy dash from the States. All very upsetting. Boys well. Tim has had huge model to make for Uni which has taken all holidays and much of my time too. Parents should be given marks as well. Jed is embarking on an expensive but good programming course thru SEEK which should open up his employment options. He and Bec are off to Melbournr for a few days. We are off to Naracoorte for a picnic in the scrub for Rob Gun's 60th. Old times eh? Keep safe and happy pedalling luv Annie

Those pesky elephants - From: "Sure Swift Fighters"
I like the idea of a studded door. You never know when an elephant might charge.Dwain(the goldfish), is ready to get the kero out for the next part of his new act for next years royal show. If the canon girl got the gig,Dwain thinks he is on a winner with " The Ring of Fire" Man,don't challenge the authorities-they have guns, and I would like to see you home at some time. Your` trying to relax`partner James..

Hi to the Medwins down under, down under - From: pedallingpete becomes pissedoffpete
I'm glad you are enjoying it. It's certainly different with internet than when you are I were away in the 70s. I hear Rajasthan is getting pretty touristy which is hard imagine. I've only seen a handful of tourists so far. Gujurat is not visited by tourists much. Love Pete

Hi John - From: pedallingpete becomes pissedoffpete
Thanks for following the blog. I think any travel is to be valued & cherished. As for riding to Melbourne,I bet the pollution factor is pretty good compared to where I am at the moment! Cheers pedallingpete P.S.Call in and see James sometime will you? I'm concerned he is getting too attched to our remaining pet, Dwain, since Bella went off to Doggy heaven. He's training him to go through hoops. He's our goldfish. Cheers Peter

Amazing - From: pedallingpete becomes pissedoffpete
Pete it makes Singapore and Phuket seem like such a doddle!! You must have the constitution of an ox...a huge benefit in India of course. Will cycles to Melbourne soon...even that seems relatively trivial. Take care.

Geetings from blighty - From: pedallingpete becomes pissedoffpete
High Pete - Its so interesting to hear about your travels, we are really pleased you thought of us. The photographs are fantastic too, really give a sense of being there. As you know when we were in Adelaide I was a keen cyclist and you are now putting me to shame. My biggest adventure was to do the Leeds to Libverpool canal. Not quite the same but interesting inits own way. Can you belive its 10 years at xmas since we were in Adelaide - it would be so good to do an anniversary trip back to see everyone. Hope the trip continues well despite diminished gear power. love Noel & Ian (not looking forward t a british winter brrr :)

Thanks Janet. It would be good if you could bring back smell scratchies for all your friends and could choose which ones for who you liked or those you didn't! My nose has been working overtime and at times just has a rest I think. Love to all there pedallingpete

LIMCA? - From: Getting There
Hi Annie Thanks for your post. Great to here things went well with your trip with Claire. I haven't got dehydrated like we did that day in Rajasthan some 27? years ago. I hear it's pretty touristy now. The railway system is much better now and their internet booking system is fantastic. People still sleep at the station although it doesn't seem to smell as much as it used to in the 70's. Maybe I'm more acclimatized. It's been difficult to get onto internet...either not available, too slow or not working. I've put up two posts tonight. I'm currently in Jalgaon on my way to Gujarat tomorrow. The bike, as you can see in the post, is limping a bit on 8 gears but getting me by until I can get it fixed when I get back. At least its the lowest gears for those hills. It's really humid and I get absolutely drenched. I spent the last two days in Ellora & Ajanta cave site that were pretty impressive. Love Pete

Hi Traveller - From: Getting There
Hi Pete, Good to read you are safe and well, even if the pedal part is a little worse for wear. Feeling very envious - would love to be there again! Trip with Mum went well. She LOVED the snow. She even got on and off the chair lift as it was moving, and it snowed all the way to the top. We were both squealing. It was very special to have taken her to see snow for the first time(in her 86 years). Stayed in Daylesford and Bright - both beautiful. Boys ok (well I thoink Jed is - haven't spoken to him for about 2 weeks. Tim under the pump at Uni and stressed out and now has sore throat. To be expected with the hours he is keeping and food he's not eating. Keep safe luv Annie

Hi from India - From: Getting There
Thanks Kath for the well wishes. I wanted to see what's called the mini Taj Mahal here in Aurangabad this afternoon, but got caught in the afternoon rain. Someone told me 1,000 people died near here last week or so from floods and also the bombing that you may have heard about was about 100kms from here. So far getting wet has been about it really, although my bike did get damaged in the plane and is limping a bit but should be easily fixed on my return. All for now Cheers Pete

Hi there you lucky traveller! - From: Getting There
Hi Peter, Glad to hear you arrived safely. The Singapore stopover sounded like a great start to your trip! Beautiful weather here. It's going to be 27 degrees on Sunday for the City to Bay - might have to follow that with gin and tonics out the back! Take care, Kath xx

On Yer Bike - From: Getting There
Good travelling Pete. PS. I am sitting in my dingy little office, where a stingy ray of sunlight struggles feebly down between the houses tall... Actually, the view from the Greens office in the Lower Ground Floor of Parliament House is of the legs of bus passengers waiting in King William Street, but you get the idea - jealous of your adventure.

Wishing you all the best. - From: Bike is in the Bag
Peter, wanted to ring and wish you the best but phone engaged. All those other well wishers I guess. Then a blog message appeared! That explains why the phone line was busy! Have a great and safe journey, looking forward to keeping up online and then more stories when you return. Can't think of a name for the bike, but it'll just come to you one day. Plus the only names I know are a bunch of God manifestations, Tilla, Shivar, Ghanesh etc. Maybe Mahaburata (spelling totally wrong) cos its an epic Indian (Hindu) story and your on an epic Indian journey? Have fun.
