Thanks
Hi James Thanks for your comments, I’ve corrected the use of the word ‘Westerner‘. Very embarrassed that I made such a stupid mistake. I’m afraid my Latin American Spanish is not great and I used a phrase book for a literal translation of ’rico’ to ‘rich‘. We actually didn’t feel in anyway threatened, and certainly not compared to walking past teenagers in our home town of London that‘s for sure! Apologies it came across like that, I would never mean to offend anyone from this amazing country or present it in a negative way. Best wishes Paula

rico rico muy rico
rico can also mean "attractive" or "sexy" (for a guy, since rica would be for a woman). children shouting "rich" in the economic sense sounds highly unusual in chile. i would guess they were commenting more on your physical appearance than your net worth. feel flattered, not threatened. saludos.

east is east
oh, and you will not stick out in chile b/c you're "western". chile is a western country and its people, like those of several latin american countries, fully consider themselves to be western and part of the western world, and always have. you will stand out in chile for being foreigners, or for your nordic appearance, but not for being western.

Invisible Elephants
Hey Paula - looks like you are having an exciting time! We had a very similar safari experience in India with a very enthusiatic guide pointing out the very freshly laid elephant-poo - and yet we got to the end of the day never having seen any of the poo-producers! Still saw lots of other cool things but doesn't stop it being a tiny bit irritating... Take care and enjoying your blog in Edinburgh Dave

Sh1t guys!
Man that sucks, I'm furious too, f-ing thieving shts! I hope you get things sorted out and that, after initial delays, you get cards, passports and such replaced. Don't let it ruin the adventure, it'll only be a tiny wee bit of it.
