| 2nd October 2009 liliram | Funny and scary........ - From: Disrobing before strangers Hey, that was some experience at the airport. I like the way you wrote about it, had to laugh while at the same time feel anxious over how it ended. Overall, this is a good read. Enjoyed the humour too. |
| 22nd October 2008 Kari Sand | Checking in and hoping your on the mend - From: A Lovely Week in an African Hospital Hi, Paul - What an ordeal! You really put Jeff's appendectomy story to shame (have Courts tell you about how I told him to take a laxative before I knew it was appendicitis, as if that would do any good! Good thing I went to law school instead of med school!) We hope you're all better now! Not totally surprised you two are extending your stay but glad you'll be coming home for a long visit. Looking forward to that! I'm putting together a small care package for you two, and I'll let you know when it's been sent. Give our love to Courtney. We miss you both. We really look forward to blog updates, so please keep them coming!! ~Kari and family |

| 18th July 2006 joe | Happy Trails - From: One more week in Huancayo Hi Paul, I heard some folks say "a picture is good as a thousand words" but to me, the way you wrote your Huancayo experience, made me "see" a lot of pictures in my head. I was 15 years old back in 1966 when a schoolmate from Lima, invited me to Huancayo. I have been to Huancayo only once and your impressions of the same place, brought me lots of memories and "saw" pictures in your writing. May the good Lord give strenght, You'll be someone very important one day. joseortiz1025@msn.com |

| 10th July 2006 Paul | Blog... not travel guide - From: Los Cangrejos Ecaparon! I use this travelblog to write about my personal experiences... it's not a travel guide. I don't feel any responsibilty to lie about my experiences just so some tourist meandering around the internet gets a warm fluffy feeling about a place. |
| 9th July 2006 Maria Supomo | - From: Los Cangrejos Ecaparon! Hey..well Just wanted to say thanks heaps...I'm From Muisne and well the Coke-Head thing really...It's just the thing we need for tourist to come..When you search for Muisne on Google your comment comes up..So thanks Alot Really..You're a Legend Mate.. | 7th July 2006 Jeremy | Well Done - From: Disrobing before strangers I must commend you on how you handled yourself. I confronted a similar situation in Peru. I think the advice that any travelor should extrapolate from your story is to remain calm and respond in a rational manner. |
| 4th July 2006 Silje | yes funny - From: Disrobing before strangers I'm sorry for your experience but I have to admit that I was laughing over your story! Good thing you didn't get held back for anything else! A good story to share with others! Happy travels :) |
| 4th July 2006 N | Ecuadorean Airport Police - From: Disrobing before strangers Thanks for sharing your experience. Makes me realise that I had a very near miss when flying out of Guayaquil in Feb. Problem started at passport control - the guy couldn't find "United Kingdom" on his computer, and as he had clearly never heard of the UK seemed convinced therefore that my passport was a fake. Eventually got through when his colleague showed him how to drive the computer. However the delay obviously caught the eye of the drug police and I was pulled aside and given the verbal third degree in Spanish. Having gone through my entire itinerary he started going on about drugs. My blank look resulted in me having to go through the entire process again in English with his colleague, but after 15 minute he obviously decided to let me off without dragging me off to the back room. Thought I was having a really bad day when the airline officials called out my name over the tannoy immediately after (judging by the verbal abuse the checkin staff were getting) bumping several other people off the flight, but I was wrong - upgraded to business class!! Ecuadorean airports weren't that bad after all! |
| 1st July 2006 Ireson | - From: Disrobing before strangers If it makes you feel any better about the government ... I got stripped searched in the Denver airport coming back to ATL... apparently there's something really suspicious about a college kid playing US National Rugby for a week out there. Come down to clemson a-hole. |
| 1st July 2006 Cessna152 | - From: Disrobing before strangers Very nicely written. Liked the way you got loads of oompa lumpa references in. Very witty. |
| 1st July 2006 Daniel | Funny. . . It's always funnier when it happens to someone else! - From: Disrobing before strangers This made my day! I enjoyed reading about your encounter at the airport. I don't know if I could have remained that calm. |
| 30th June 2006 Paul | Read a little deeper - From: A Night With Drug Lords Sorry to offend you, but i think that you should read a little deeper into my blog updates. You have every right to think that I am a "stupid person", but make sure you do your research before name-calling. If you look back at every update I made from Colombia, you will notice that I was constantly talking about how much I loved Colombians and complemented them on their courtesy and unbelievable friendliness. I think Colombians are incredible and have said that they just have a bad image that is hard to kick. I have even recommended other travelers to visit the country. I do not believe that my own stupidity in getting myself into interesting situations says anything about the entire population of the country. I even stated that I put myself in the situation and that it was completely avoidable. Sorry if you don't like my "stupid story" but it is just a story of my personal experiences and I think you just misinterpreted them. |
| 29th June 2006 aleko | Bad - From: A Night With Drug Lords I think you are a stupid person, Colombia is more thank drugs, million of colombians works, study and more in the righ form and you with your stupid story create a bad imagen of this country, thank you for nothing! |

| 30th May 2006 Rach | - From: A much needed update! Hi there, I just finished a 5 day trek around and past Huaytapallana... nothing as hairy as walking on ice between crevices, but pretty great nonetheless. It sounds like a great adventure you had, and it´s still a beautiful and isolated area. And very cool when the mists come in, and hearing the glacier crack at night. Happy travels : ) |
| 29th May 2006 Mansun | - From: A Night With Drug Lords Haha, that's some experience that people would never get at home. |
| 22nd May 2006 Jackie | Craaaaaaaazy! - From: A Night With Drug Lords You are definitely a crazy man! I hope you make it home alive to attend your sister's wedding! Don't worry Mom...I'm sure he didn't touch any of that "stuff" on the party table! Be safe... |

| 13th May 2006 Katie | - From: Bus rides... Hi, You don't know me, but I love reading your journal. I leave for Peru in three weeks, so I've been doing research, and I stumbled upon this after a google search for "Huancayo" (because I'm spending a month there volunteering). I read one entry about in your travelogue, and now you're bookmarked on my computer. Thanks for writing so well about a place nobody else writes about at all! Katie |
| 12th May 2006 kuku | to me, colombians are the most friendly ppl - From: Beautiful beaches to beautiful cities I traveled central america and part of south america last year and feel the same as you do towards Colombians. You are absolutely right that the colombians have been the most friendly and helpful people. Mexicans are very nice too. However seem like there is no way not to meet Israeli travelers on the road because they are everywhere. And i feel Israeli travelers are nice, but mainly to opposite sex travelers. Happy travel!! |
| 10th May 2006 Kelly | de pronto - From: Beautiful beaches to beautiful cities hey...be careful with the elections coming up. im made the mistake of being caught in the middle of a conservative right wing mexican political rally a few weeks ago, in dowtown guadalajara. needless to say, i was pushed around a bit, but i held my own :) hahaa, if they even knew my political views i think theyd take my visa and passport. well i have 7 days until i fly to costa rica. cuidate! brazos y besos, kelly |

| 5th January 2006 KateEighty | Some decent points made - From: Los Cangrejos Ecaparon! Hey Paul, you've made some pretty interesting comments on your blog. I too wanted to do some voluntary work in South America but you are right - there is a "feel good" tourism about it that I cant ignore. That said, I have stumbled across an orphanage which is a pretty special place, and I am looking to get there at the end of the year - (www.losgorriones.net) Lesley D on this travel blog wrote about it, and it seems pretty geniuine. For the time being, I will continue to laugh at your Coked-Up Christmas Match... Safe travels KateEighty www.kateonthego.blogspot.com |

| 30th November 2005 Martin | Great pictures - From: Copacabana to La Paz Hey Paul, I love your pictures - especially because they remind me so much of my tour a couple of years ago. Lake Titicaca was awesome and so was the whole experience of being at such high altitude. The bus ride (in my case) to Coroico was positively scary. I had a window seat and sometimes did not see the road under the window anymore - it is pretty narrow. But I loved to relax in the pool of our guesthouse in Coroico. I could go on and on but this is your blog so I am going to quit now. Have a good time, Paul! |

| 22nd November 2005 Katei | You were right... - From: Bus rides... it was definitely worth reading this journal entry *rocks with laughter* You have my deepest sympathies - what a horrid situation to be in! Diarrhoea is bad enough when you're in the comfort of your own home! Might be worth your while investing in something like travelan to avoid any future food-related issues :P Just wanted to say that I'm loving reading about your travels and the work you've been doing. It's nice to be able to live vicariously through someone else whilst I'm stuck here at boring work in the concrete jungle :( Regards, Katei - A Bored Aussie At Work ;) (blakkat (at) hotmail (dot) com) |
| 11th November 2005 peter | - From: Bus rides... Sounds like an awesome case of traveler's...i feel your pain (my intestines and bad turkish buffet food were not too compatible either.) Or could it be you celebrated the 21st bday too much? Hang in there. |

| 6th October 2005 Emily Eddey | - From: Peru! PAUL!! Sorry I have not written you at all. My mom promised to send me your web site, but of course, couldn't figure it out. Life seems crazy for you right now, however, as I sit doing college applications, eating chicken head soup and taking 7 hour rides on a cramped bus, seems quite delightful:)I'm sorry you had to miss me getting into my first real car accident. Again, it involved running something over, only this time it was not a rock, but my neighbors fence. YUP...I rolled right over the 4 foot fence and into my neighbors yard. 10 jackass points for me! On a brighter note I may be featured in a magazine as a musical artist. Ironicly, the magazine is Black Family Digest! tehehe. Anywho, that's the scoop. I miss you terribly, I wish you the best of luck on your journies, and I look forward to reading more of your updates! Much Love, Emily |
| 4th October 2005 ILene Eddey | Keep writing - From: Peru! I wrote your Dad the other day and told him I enjoyed reading your blog entries. Your writing is quite good! Love reading about your life/travel experiences. NOt much new here ~ except Emily got her license 10 days ago. Has been driving stick shift. Car stalled in driveway and brakes did not work - ended up in neighbors yard across the street- knocked out their fence and her car was in their front yard. Not quite the same excitement as yours. LOL Thank goodness her 'latest' boyfriend's family owns an autobody shop. Had the tools to remove the fence from under the car and got the car out of the yard. Well, take care of yourself Paul. Hug,hold and play with those babies. I'll be thinking of you -- and them. Love Aunt Ilene |
| 20th September 2005 Aunt Ilene | - From: a quick hello Paul: Glad to hear you made it to Costa Rica! Don't forget when you are at the 'old American men" hotel you can use that number I gave you to call your Mom and Dad once in awhile. E-mails are great but it is nice to hear a son's voice once in awhile when so far away. OK enough nagging or you'll regret showing me how to use this thing. Love your journal news! Hello to your Costa Rican family. Had your coffee this morning! Take care Love Aunt Ilene |
| 19th September 2005 Courtney | - From: a quick hello Gone less than a week and already 2 updates! Wow...you really are spoiling us. Don't worry, I won't get myself used to it :) Anyway, it's so nice to hear that everything's going well so far. Of course things at Sprout aren't quite the same without you, but we all are here wishing you the best. Take care...I miss you! ~ Courtney |

| 17th September 2005 rosalee kaplan | email for the lone traveler - From: How lucky are you to get an update after only one day away? hi paul, Read your update and enjoyed hearing about your first day back. Interesting place! Jake is back at Brandeis and Dana flew up from Washington (American University) to spend the weekend with him. The plane ticket was his high school graduation gift to her! Right now they're driving around Boston looking for a good deli that Jake heard about! Jake is having problems with his knee and probably won't be playing basketball this year. He's getting physical therapy which will continue for most of the year. Other than that he's settled into his apartment with two roommates, one of whom is currently looking to buy a cat.(much to Jake's dismay) Wish you well with your travels Paul and I look forward to reading more of you updates. Fondly, Rosalee Kaplan |
| 16th September 2005 DAD | Glad you are safe. - From: How lucky are you to get an update after only one day away? Thanks for the plug, of course it is even worse when your Dad is a doctor!!!! I will send medical advice separately. DR."I told you so" DAD |

| 18th August 2005 Maggie | already over?!?! - From: Penn Dutch/ Sproutstock/ Lake George Paul, I was surfing the web this evening for Sprout-related sites and came quickly to your blog. See, I already watched "King of Camp" with my family last night and plan on watching it again in a few days, and I just checked out the photos on Sprout's site. Thanks for posting your stories and shots! I'll point people here when I need a refresher in ridiculous stories. Hope you enjoyed your few days of rest and if you want a cookie, I bet we can find that last bit that Susie didn't stuff into her mouth at Sproutstock. Grins, Maggie a la Sprout ps: Betrand is ridiculously wonderful to work with. Brian and I found him to be very French- asking for his omelette to be made with sweet butter, not regular oil. And we sent only one participant home because he forgot his meds which help him control anxiety. This explains why he sat on the grass 20 ft away from the group, rocking as he refused a 2nd meal of the day. Yolanda was FABULOUS and made us laugh constantly. When we finally got her to give us an impression of her laugh, Brian was about to be sick! .... I think I am having symptoms of Sprout withdrawal. |
