The prospect of not being in India anymore made the flight to Dubai the best of the whole trip!! An extra hour spent sitting on the tarmac on the plane in Mumbai gave us time to puzzle over the cryptic text message from Imogen's Dad, Iain who was supposed to be meeting us in Dubai. "Look out for the ladies in yellow jackets", it said. Upon reaching the top of the walkway at Dubai airport we realised what he meant - a Russian lady called Alpina was standing there wearing a yellow jacket holding a big sign with our names on. We didn't know it yet, but she was an angel in disguise. "Come viz me" , she said and led us to a secret lift. At the bottom of that was one of those bleepy ... read more

Our flight from Bangkok to Kolkata was filled with apprehension at what awaited us upon landing. Our fears were slightly allayed on the plane as we read a copy of the Hindustan Times which had photographs of India featuring familiar items like buses and houses. However, on arrival we soon discovered that our initial fears were correct - we had arrived in a third world country. Kol-Kacka We had the foresight whilst in Bangkok to research what we might find at Kolkata airport. We knew there would be money changing facilities (you can't get Rupees outside of India) and a government run pre-pay taxi scheme to hopefully help minimise the chances of being totally 'taken for a ride' (sorry). Of course, as with all best layed plans, this went to pot the moment we got through ... read more

Our first stop in Thailand was to be a place called Ao Nang, a beach area 13km from Krabi in the South of the country. By far the cheapest way to get there from Langkawi caused another outburst from Able Seaman Cunningham. Oh my God, a boat AND a bus!? We turned up at the port and bought tickets for the 45 minute ferry journey to the port of Satun, the most Southerly entry point to the Thai mainland. Mercifully the water was so calm it looked like a mirror and there was not a vomiting schoolchild in sight. A travel operator on the ferry sold us the bus tickets from Satun to Krabi, but he required payment in Thai currency (baht) and all we had was a few Malaysian ringgit. Our ticket man said this ... read more

Oh no, not another bus! cried Paul when he realised how we planned to get from Singapore to our next stop in Kuala Lumpur. But this was no ordinary bus. It was a Super Luxury Sleeper Bas Ekspres! This means a full size ultra-modern coach but with only 18 seats and there was enough legroom even for lanky types like us to stretch out fully without even touching the seat in front. The 6 hour journey cost us just under 14 quid each. National Express could learn a thing or two... Kuala Lumpur It was easy to tell when we had arrived in Kuala Lumpur. The empty highway suddenly became an enormous traffic jam and exhaust fumes started to filter into the bus. All of a sudden we had 'arrived'. The driver told us to get ... read more

The flight from Cairns to Singapore made a short stop off in Darwin which gave the captain of our plane two opportunities to demonstrate the art of 'flying into the ground at speed and surviving'. Once we'd picked up our teeth and belongings and made our way out of Singapore airport we encountered a strange man who seemed to want to talk to us. After several minutes we recognised the man beneath the beard - it was Imogen's dad Iain! He was joining us in Singapore and Malaysia for the next two weeks and had booked us into a hostel called Sleepy Sams to the North of Singapore city. We dumped our bags and went off in search of a nice cold beer so we could have a catch up together. However it soon became clear ... read more

Q. What's worse than 11 hours on a bus? A. 13 hours on a bus! ...and that's how long it takes to get from Sydney to Byron Bay up on the East Coast. Again we travelled overnight which saved on a night's accommodation and also allowed us to collect some spectacular bruises trying to use the seats as beds. Damn those armrests... Paul would like to pass on his thanks to everyone who attended Paulstonbury that same evening back in England. (For the uninitiated, 'Paulstonbury' is his yearly birthday do in England). We're just sorry we couldn't be there, because we'd have probably had a better night's sleep despite the drunken revellry! We are aware people were trying to call us but as our fellow bus passengers were sleeping around us and due to the prohibitive ... read more

We CAN'tBERR Another day here! 11 hours sounds like an awfully long time to spend on a bus. And it is. But this was our chosen steed for the journey from Melbourne to Canberra, and that's how long it takes. We could have taken the train which was more expensive and would have saved us just 15mins so we bit the bullet. By travelling overnight we saved a night's accommodation and as there tends not to be that much to see between Australian cities, we thought we could have a nice kip. That was the plan, but unfortunately the highways over here appear to be cobbled, while the coach appeared to be fitted with square wheels. Despite the resulting vibrations we managed to get a few intermittent hours of sleep before arriving in Canberra early in ... read more

G'day all! I just wanted to say a quick thanks to everyone for all the texts, emails, faxes and carrier pigeons that have arrived over the last couple of days wishing me birthday greetings. Just for the record as a couple of you asked the question, we are currently 9 hours ahead of the UK. You'll understand that we had to do something a bit special seeing as Imogen got to fly over the Grand Canyon for her big day. As we are in Sydney, what could be more appropriate than crossing the Sydney Harbour Bridge? And if you're thinking I mean we had a pleasant stroll across to the other side, had a pint and walked home again, you're wrong. I mean we climbed over the archy bit! But first things first, a fry up ... read more

So with heavy hearts we left New Zealand to fly to Australia. We'd pre-booked a hostel in the centre of Melbourne - called Nomad's Industry. It's ultra-modern and ideal for the 20-something backpacker, but we thought we'd stay there anyway! We arrived, had a few welcome drinks and got our heads down for the night. We woke up to find it was much warmer than the South Island and Imogen was spotted later in the day without a coat on!! But the sightseeing had to be put on hold while we found the Indian embassy to sort out our visas for the India-leg of our trip in October. Unfortunately the Great British tradition of bureaucratic red-tape seems to have been passed on through the old Empire and we were told this was going to take 5-10 ... read more

Hi All, Just to give you an update, Dave AKA Rufous and Mr Jimbo Hunt have both been technomological and have managed to salvage most of our lost blogs! Many thanks to them both for their hard work - it means a lot to have salvaged those memories. We're slaving away rewriting our recent adventures in the South Island (unfortunately lost as we hadn't published them) so expect to see those shortly. See you soon! Paul & Ims... read more
