Just a quick entry to let everybody who bothers (takes the time) to read my travel blog. I'm back home in Guelph now, all safe and sound. After 38 hrs of sleepless travel, my Thailand adventure has come to a close. Nice place to visit, would definately go back, don't think I'd want to live there. Sorry Santollini, I didn't manage to bring back a giant zippo. They were everywhere, but as soon as you asked, I couldn't find one. Probably wouldn't have fit in my luggage anyway. So this concludes my travel blog. Thanks for reading. Goodnight.... read more

So more training last week, leading up to sunday which was my next full day off. Some of the guys from the gym and I thought it might be a nice idea to take a tour of some islands near Phuket. We chose to take a tour of Ko Phi Phi and the islands that surround it. So we went in to Patong and booked ourselves a tour. Thus started our adventure...... We arrived at the Phuket harbour at around 7:45am, and located our tour boat. It was a 4 engine speedboat that fit approximately 30 people. From our booking, and the brochures, we were under the impression that it was going to be quite a bit smaller, but it didn't bother me too much. The boat ride to the island took about an hour, and ... read more

I apologize for the delay in blog entries, the internet at the camp has been down for several days. I actually wrote this last thursday, so just imagine that is when I'm talking about: Alrighty, not much terribly new recently. Just lots of training. On tuesday, there was an 8 man Muay Thai tournament that happened at Bangla Stadium in Patong. Saohin entered into this tournament. It was his second time fighting Muay Thai in 14 years (But he'd had 60 some odd boxing matches). Before that he'd had 13 years of Muay Thai experience. And he's only 34 years old. Do the math. Saohin caught an elbow 30 seconds in to the first round of his first fight, which caused a cut under his eye that would swell into a nice black eye. Otherwise he ... read more

Weekend in Bangkok

On thursday night, somebody found a copy of Saohin's fight against Paulie Ayala, in Texas. So everybody gathered around the juice bar and watched. It was amusing to watch Saohin, because he had never watched it before. When I spoke to him about that match, he said "Ah Paulie Ayala. He has my phone number." I was confused. He explained "In that fight, Paulie Ayala has my phone number." Then I understood what he was trying to say was Paulie Ayala had his number, which is a phrase that means Saohin was outmatched in that fight. He clearly won the first 4 rounds. The next 8, however, Paulie did in fact have his number. So, this weekend I took a flight to Bangkok to visit my old friend Andrew Konrad, who I used to train with ... read more

The last few days have been relatively uneventful, except for the plane crash at Phuket airport that killed several dozen people. It's been all over the news here, as I'm sure it has been everyhwere else. That was somewhat scary to hear about, but the owner of gym made an announcement that there was nobody on board who was on their way to Tiger Muay Thai. The main reason for the crash, news people are saying, was the poor weather conditions. It rains a lot here. It will show up without warning and torrentially downpour harder than I've ever seen, for an hour at a time. Sunday was my first whole day off of training, so I planned on heading to the beach, and taking pictures of temples and giant Buddhas and the like, but the ... read more

Today was a relatively cool day. Most of the Thais were wearing jackets. It was 27 degrees. Not much new has happened in the last couple days. Heavy training, lots of it. I've learned an awful lot. I've met some interesting people from all over the world, quite a few from England, a few Aussies. I've gotten to know the Thai trainers a little better, and have caught on to their sense of humor. One thing that they find pretending to be scared hilarious. Ngoo, who weighs 125 lbs if he's lucky, was demonstrating a clinch throwing technique on a British guy who is 6'4 and 250lbs. When the Brit did it back to him, he stood up, looked terrified and ran out of the ring at which point all of the Thais broke into hysterics. ... read more

In between sessions yesterday I went and checked out the local shopping mall. Malls here are almost exactly the same as in Canada, a lot of the same stores and everything. It's funny to see. There's KFCs all over the place, but here fried chicken is breakfast. There's MacDonalds, Shell gas stations, and the Gap. The afternoon training session yesterday was harder than the morning. The reasoning is that if they push you too hard in the morning, you won't come back for the afternoon. My calf muscles feel like concrete. But all in all, great training. The thai trainers are really funny. It's like they're an entire culture of practical jokers. They love to make fun of each other. If they make fun of you, you make fun of them back and they laugh even ... read more

Alright, now that I'm settled, you're going to get a better blog entry. Sorry about that last one. Stop complaining, you're lucky it's there at all. I went on 38 hrs without sleep. 15 hrs to Hong Kong, 3 hours to Bangkok, 1 hr 45 mins to Phuket. I met some interesting people on the way. I sat next to a Chinese guy on the flight to Hong Kong who told me that Thai transvestites are better looking than Thai women. On the way to Bangkok, I sat next to a business man from Dubai with the worst suit I've ever seen. Don Cherry type stuff. He asked me what he should do to lose weight because I had a nice body. Then on the way to Phuket I sat in front of a baby that ... read more

Hey everybody, this is just a quick update because I don't have access to the internet for very long. I'll start uploading pictures in a couple days. In total it took me 38 hrs to get here, and I didn't sleep any of it. It's coming up on 9 right now, and I'm planning on going to bed pretty soon. Training starts at 6:45 tomorrow morning. I'll give a more updated entry in a couple days once I have everything figured out, this is just to let everybody know that I got here fine without getting beaten up, getting anything stolen, or losing anything. Talk to you later.... read more
