Panama Patrizia

I´m a panamanian in love with authenticity. I live in the most beautiful part of Panama City, a 300 year old colonial town called Casco Viejo. I feel very little is known about it, so I hope my blog help future travellers understand this diamond in the rough. For me, it´s Panama´s best window to the world, as it was literally the place where the Republic was born.

www.ArcoProperties.com After being away for a while, I´ve decided to post a series of photos "Before and After" of Casco Viejo. Some of them are of 1885 and with comparisons of when the city started to crumble and then today´s photos of restored buildings. So it is really a Super Before, Before, in the Meantime, and Now photos! Enjoy.... According to UNESCO´s book on Casco Viejo, the original "Presidential Palace" was really a very simple colonial style building that was used as the Royal Accounts building (Real Contaduría). It was close to the "Sea Door" where they could easily process all paperwork for merchandise and count the coins of gold.... The photo here illustrates the style, but it really is from another government building of the same era: the Cabildo de Panama which today belongs to ... read more

www.arcoproperties.com This morning was raining a lot in Casco. My dreams where suddenly about river rafting, swimming in pools... anything water related. Until I woke up and actually heard it, but still half asleep I thought it was my husband taking a shower. When finally came out, a beautiful rainbow had formed in the sky towards Amador. It landed right next to the future Biodiversity Museum, which has been designed by Frank Ghery and is currently under construction. Took my camera out, but as usual is my phone, so couldn´t capture all its beauty. A second rainbow was forming, but didn´t get to be as bright and beautiful as the first one. I´m including also some photos from a beach walk last week. Casco Viejo is a rocky peninsula, a lot of it is orange with ... read more

www.ArcoProperties.com If you ask any Panamanian what a "zonian" is, they would certainly answer: someone that was born at the Panama Canal Zone. Back in the beginnings of the century, Panama and the United States negotiated the terms for the Panama Canal, giving the US a large piece of property to develop the mega facilites and keep the forests that would provide with water to the system. In the year 2000 and as per a later treaty (the Torrijos Carter) the Canal was handled to the Panamanians along with the controversial "Canal Zone". While a lot has been written about it and in different tones, the truth is that it defined generations in both sides of the fence, as even Americans born in the Canal Zone area felt a bit Panamanian and created their own tropicalized ... read more
