After 26 hours of traveling, a detour to Seoul, Korea, and an early morning plane change in Seoul we set foot on Hong Kong island. Something about stong head winds, low fuel, and then the need for a new flight crew added the unexpected additional 7 hours to our flight. But, after a short nap and shower we were ready to see how much Hong Kong had changed since we were last there in 1998. The first thing that we noticed was the additional skyscrapers along both sides of the Harbor. The new IFC Tower 2 now dwarfs the former tallest building, the Bank of China. Soon the IFC 2 will become the second tallest when the new building on the Kowloon side is completed. The practice of land reclamation continues along the harbor and the ... read more

Oh lovely Switzerland, it's so good to be back!! We so love being here and hiking the alpine trails. I didn't plan to do a Swiss blog, but there were two events that made me want to document this visit. First, we found a new trail from the Waldspitz peak that was delightful. It had waterfalls, glacier views, valley views, mountain peaks, and interesting cliff formations. It was a lovely 4 hour hike from the peak down to the village of Grindlewald. The second event was the snow storm that occurred in mid July. In Interlaken and in the valley it was just rain. But, the cable car to the Alpen Tower took us into 6 inches of snow. We were the only ones there to enjoy this summer wonderland. Being the sun lovers that we ... read more

Leaving Venice we trained and bussed our way to Slovenia. Our route took us to the town of Piran on Slovenia's coast. It's a nice town with the main focal point being a square named after the famous violinist, Tartini. The old town is interesting with its winding alleyways and quaint boutiques. The most unusual feature of the town was the long concrete promenade that doubles as a beach. Piran is mainly a tourist destination and the sunbathers were lined up on their towels and in their chairs along the length of the promenade. Concrete beaches aren't our idea of day at the beach, so instead we ate pizza at a seaside cafe and enjoyed the view. The cost of food and lodging in this area of Slovenia was really high, so we stayed for a ... read more

A Night in Venice

"We should arrive in Venice in time for dinner," Ron said as we left Corfu on our early morning flight to Milan. True to his word, we stepped off the train in the Venice station at 5:30, found a room, and were exploring the city by 6:30. Just enough time to see the city, the canals, the square, and the harbor before heading off to dinner. It has been several years since we visited this charming city and we were pleased with how good it looked. The streets and the water in the canals were quite clean. St. Mark's Basilica restoration was finally done on the entrance and we got to see the entry for the first time in many, many years. As I said we just spent the evening there on our way to Slovenia ... read more

For 2 decades we have sat on the island of Corfu and wondered about the little country of Albania, just a short ferry trip across the Adriatic. Now that it is finally allowing visitors, we decided to take the day trip and check it out. Before going, we read Tony Wheeler's account of it in his book entitiled "Bad Lands". What a strange little country it is! We were only able to visit the coastal resort town of Agio Saranda and the Roman ruins of Butrint. Our time in the city was very limited due to the hour long drive to Butrint. Agio Saranda has sprung up into a city from the little village that it was during the dictatorship of Hoxha. The construction got a little chaotic with developers claiming land and building hotels and ... read more

You never know who you might run into when traveling. But, to meet up with friends on the little Greek island of Paros would seem to be statistically impossible. They were heading south on the ferry and we were heading north. But, our paths managed to cross on the same day in Paros. It was fun to share dinner and travel stories while making plans for future destinations. The best part of Paros, was our day trip to Antiparos. It is a short 15 minute ferry ride to a very quite and picturesque island. It is so small and quiet that we rented an ATV and did the 12 miles of drivable road to explore the island. Along the way we passed the new house that Tom Hanks just built. At least we think we found ... read more

More Islands

Astyapalea was delightful and Amorgos was as beautiful as ever. We are continuing our travels through the islands and these two stops were especially nice. Both islands are a bit off the beaten path and exhibit a more traditional Greek life style. Astyapalea is shaped like a butterfly and has a fabulous castle ruin above the town of Pera Yialos, where we stayed. We hiked up to the Chora and walked through the ruins several times. The upper area of the Chora is like a ghost town, with doors slamming and hinges creaking as the wind howls through the deserted pathways. The houses surrounding the castle were abandoned in 1953 due to a major earthquake and now are padlocked and slowly decaying. The government is attempting to restore the castle and the surrounding village, but is ... read more

Island Hopping

Island hopping through the Greek islands, it's a dirty job but someone has to do it! We are struggling through this task with our first stop in Rhodes. It remains pretty much the same from visit to visit. This stop was most pleasant with lovely spring weather and reduced tourist crowds. The Old Town is charming and the New Town seems to be growing. We did all of the standard tourist stops to the Avenue of the Knights, the Palace of the Grand Master, the Square for the Jewish Martyrs, and the main Plaka. We ate lots of Greek Salads, Moussaka, and Gyros and loved every mouthful. One memorable sight, near the harbor, was the large dog riding on a motor bike with his owner along the main harbor drive. The dog didn't seem to have ... read more
