Hi there, I am a looking forward to returning to Canada's eastern Arctic. I will be leaving B.C. west coast this Friday to spend the summer up in Iqaluit, Nunavut. My husband, son and I left Iqaluit in the mid 90's after having lived there for 10+ years. I have been spending the last two summers up in the Arctic, namely Cape Dorset but this year we are returning to our old home town. I am also looking forward to visiting old friends and enjoying the beautiful land that is north of 60.

We are very lucky because our weather has been pretty warm over the last couple of weeks. The temperature actually reached 14C the other day. But I have to say that we have had a couple of cooler/cold days when the north wind blows. The mosquitoes actually hung in there until about a week ago. When Michael and I were walking out at the park the mosquitoes loved us. Luckily at the very last minute before leaving for our hike I threw my mosquito jacket/hood in my pack and Michael put the bug spray in his pack. I was very happy to put on the jacket because there wasn't a lot of wind to help us get rid of the blood thirsty varmints!!!! We walked around the park and then went over to the falls on ... read more

Well my time in the arctic is quickly coming to an end for yet another year. I can't believe I/we will be leaving here in a little over a couple of weeks. Mind you Michael will be heading back to Ottawa in late September for a couple of weeks and then back here to Iqaluit in early October until December. That is, after we have gone on an Alaskan Cruise to Glacier Bay with my folks, my sister, Catherine and her hubby Edward and my brother, Alvin. Yeah, there's nothing like leaving the eastern Arctic to go and visit the western Arctic eh? We are starting to get pretty excited about the trip! We are taking this trip to celebrate my Dad and Mom's upcoming 60th wedding anniversary on April 10, 2010. Things have cooled down ... read more

Hello there, I hope everyone is having as nice as summer as we are here in Iqaluit. Since arriving on June 21st I can actually count the days on one hand that have been rainy or cloudy. The temperature today is supposed to get up to 23 C yet again. Michael is travelling for 10 days with 3 other co-workers. They are travelling down south this time. They will be in N.B., Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and then back to Nunavut. I really miss Michael and am looking forward to his return next week. In the meantime I have been getting out for walks in the evening. My new walking buddy, Denise and I ventured out a couple of nights ago and we were rewarded with a very strong wind which kept most of the mosquitoes away, ... read more

We just keep celebrating throughout the month of July. We ended up celebrating the 10th anniversary of Nunavut Day here on July 9th. Michael and I enjoyed this day together. The morning started with a pancake breakfast served by members of the Legislature, namely our Premier, Eva Aariak. It was a really warm day, so warm Michael actually wore his shorts. (see picture) During the afternoon we listened to the Premier, Eva Arriak, an old friend and neighbour of ours when we lived up here over 13 years ago. We also listened to some other government officials, namely, Leona Aglukkaq, Nunavut MP and our own local Mayor, Elisapee Sheutiapik too. There was an afternoon barbeque complete with several beautifully decorated cakes. See the picture of Michael in front of the flowers on the trailer? Yes they ... read more

Happy Canada Day everyone! This day turned out to be yet another sunny day! yikes I can't believe how nice the weather has been here since I arrived. I watched the Canada Day parade which was mostly of emergency vehicles and about 3 or 4 floats. Lots and lots of people were out for the festivities which started with a pancake breakfast, then the opening ceremonies where some new residents were recognized for obtaining their Canadian citizenship. There were also artists from all over Nunavut selling their works of art (carvings, prints, traditional clothing, jewellery etc.) An afternoon barbeque with hotdogs and juice and chil con carne was provided to everybody that wanted to indulge. Unfortunately Michael was not here for the day but was flying back from Cape Dorset late that evening. Michael had some ... read more

On Saturday I went for a walk with another new buddy, Denise. We took a cab to the start of the Sylvia Grinnell Park trail and then proceeded to walk and talk and take pictures. Michael works on Saturday's so I was happy to have somebody to get outside with on another sunny warm day. The temperature was about 14 or 15 degrees C. The ice had not completely left the river and saw some people were on the ice along the shore fishing. The tide does come up to the mouth of the river and helps clear some of it. When the sun shone on the ice it was a beautiful icy blue colour that only sunshine could give it. Denise and I found many holes where lemmings and birds had been nesting among the ... read more

It was wonderful to finally land on the Iqaluit airstrip. Michael, along with are old friends, Don and Karen Tattrie as well as a couple of his co-workers from Arviat, Jason and Alison all met me at the airport. Wow you would think I was important or something, LOL! They all helped with my bags and then Michael and I were dropped off at the Capital Suites were we would be living until we found an apartment. Michael and I caught up on news from each other and before we knew it, it was time to go over to another friend of ours, Don Hutton's for dinner. Now Don H. is an extraordinary cook and we have sat at his table a number of times over the past two years when we were all living in ... read more

Well I am finally on my last leg of the journey to Iqaluit. I didn't get much sleep last night. I think it was because of the 3 hour time change. I will have plenty of time to catch up on my sleep once I get there. The flight was pretty uneventful and the meal was scrumptious. I am wondering if there will be a lot of snow. Looking out of the window as we fly farther and farther north makes me think that there will be a lot of snow when we land. I am sitting next to a gal, May, who is a research scientist from Trent University and she is going to be setting up a research station just north of Iqaluit. I ask her a lot of questions and she is very ... read more

Hello again, I arrived in Vancouver around 4:30 and am leaving at 1:45pm on June 20th for Ottawa. I managed to get Amanda all ready to go and have her Dad pick her up at school yesterday after she finished her final exams. My car was too full to be able to take both myself and Amanda plus all of our stuff to Nanaimo. I opted for taking the Duke Point ferry to Tswassen to try and avoid rush hour traffic in to the city. I was only delayed about 20 minutes south of the Dease Island tunnel. After sorting out my bags I dropped the car at Craig's girlfriend, Stephanie's parents, Dick and Carel's. I had a really nice visit and then my brother-in-law, Jonathon picked me up and drove me back to my hotel ... read more
