We flew in to Proserpine via Brisbane Proserpine being the nearest airport to Airlie Beach which is the gateway to the Whitsundays. Proserpine airport is a bit bizarre it has an outdoor departure lounge and baggage collection area Presumably they don't get a lot of rain however the day we arrived was an exception. We caught a shuttle into town and booked our accommodation and excursions through

Our final destination before returning to the UK was Dubai where we spent just a couple of nights. It was a long flight from Auckland to Dubai especially when our entertainment units packed up a 13.5 hour flight with no TV nightmare We were given a glass of champagne 2 bottles of wine and a pack of playing cards as consolation how generousDubai was the only location where we had prebook

WaitangiAfter landing in Auckland we took a shuttle bus from the airport to the ferry terminal in the city centre and took a boat over to Devonport on the North Shore. As Auckland has now grown so big there are now 5 separate cities within it so we were technically staying in 'North Shore City'. We started our 2 month stay here in style staying with our friends Sid and Christine whose holiday

After having successfully pushstarted Smelly Nelly we found ourselves on the ferry from Wellington through the wonderful Marlborough Sounds to Picton a place which turned out to be one of our favourites. Although Picton has a high volume of people travelling through it it maintains a really peaceful atmosphere and we ended up spending a number of days here at the beginning and end of our 4 w

Quarantine in Australia is a little stricter than most countries they took Laura's shoes away to be fumigated and not a moment too soon in Phil's opinion. Our friend Ross was waiting for us and ferried us to their new home in Putney that he and his wife Lyndal had just moved into. We spent a few days with Ross and Lyndal and while they were at work we were out and about exploring Sydney. We caugh

We arrived in Hanoi around midday after a short flight from Bangkok. We found the 'Tourist Office' which was a front for a hotel chain and booked a few nights in Hanoi and a Taxi into the city at a predetermined fixed price The journey into the city would have been hairraising were it not for the fact that we have now learned to ignore the overwhelming urge to crawl under the seat in fear and

We landed in Bangkok around midday at the new airport which had only been open for 4 weeks we were told it is now the biggest airport in the world. Yet again we hadnt prearranged accommodation so we booked a room in the city through the tourist info desk at the airport. We caught a taxi to the hotel and were totally ripped off by the driver even though he was running the meter. Unfortunatel

We arrived in Sri Lanka on Friday the 13th of October quite late in the evening with no hotel room booked. This was a new experience for us and way out of our comfort zone. Within seconds of emerging from the terminal we were swamped by touts trying to set us up at a hotel or BB. Faced with so much choice and not knowing who to trust we decided to splash out a few bob and stay at the 5 star Conti

The luxury started the moment we stepped off the Sri Lankan plane in Male. We were ushered into a beautifully furnished waiting room where we were greeted with fresh fruit juice and ice cold towels. We completed the checkin process whilst we waited for our seaplane transfer to Kanuhura. The seaplanes in the Maldives are essentially a taxi service flitting between the islands. We had 1 stop on our

We crossed the Orange River into South Africa just before lunch on the 21st September. Our campsite Fiddlers Rest was just a short drive away on the banks of the river. It is a beautiful campsite with lush green grass and good facilities unfortunately with its proximity to the river we were inundated with miggies and mozzies. The afternoon was spent relaxing and playing volleyball Laura the

Saturday the 9th and we crossed into Namibia headed for Etosha via Windhoek. Unfortunately this is more than a days drive in our truck so we had to bush camp for 2 nights on the way there. Bush camping basically involves finding a rarely used road which is not difficult in Namibia and setting up camp alongside it. Its fun to do the first time but the lack of facilities doesnt appeal

September 5th saw us heading for Botswana. It was a relatively short drive and we stopped on the Botswana side to stock up on supplies. What a difference You forget how little choice the Zimbabweans have until youre faced with a fully stocked shop just across the borderWe had another short drive to our campsite on the outskirts of the Chobe National Park where we set up camp and had a picnic.

We arrived in Harare at about 1400 and were met at the airport and taken to The Rocks campsite on the outskirts of town. Two truckloads 20 of people were already there which was not what we were expecting. We were also a bit concerned to find out that we were joining a group that had started in Kenya and

Steve Michele the kids came round for the weekend to catch up help celebrate Phil being 34 years young. We managed to find ourselves a little selfcatering cottage and decided to base ourselves there for 3 days. We spent the day at the Waterfront and wandering around the town before treating ourselves to a meal at a restaurant called Zest in th
