Day 5 - Thursday, August 16, 2007 Zipline at Whistler: For our last day of the trip, we decided to head up Whistler for a nice relaxing (relaxing?) day. Well, relatively speaking, it was definitely much less strenuous than the previous days but we still got our rush on the zipline. We used Ziptrek Ecotours which is based out of Whistler village and their lines are situated in the valley between Blackcomb and Whistler mountains. As we worked our way through the coastal rainforest, the guides gave us an overview of the land around us to build awareness of the environment and what we need to do to protect the last tiny bit of rainforest that exists on the west coast of North America. We took the Ziptrek Eagle tour and it includes a 2000' line ... read more

Day 4 - Wednesday, August 15, 2007 Heli-Hiking in the Tantalus Range: OK, every day of this trip was a great adventure, but if I had to pick my favorite day (reference to the One Game we played on Day 2 - "what is the one..."), this day had to be my favorite because I had never done anything like this before and everything was perfect...the weather conditions, the itinerary, and most importantly, the company. For me, part of being outside is taking in the environment around you and fully appreciating the landscape, smells, and sounds. But it becomes more significant when you're able to share that experience with the right group of people. This day was an epic one for me and so I would like to shout out a special 'thank you' to my ... read more

Day 3 - Tuesday, August 14, 2007 Hike up to the Second Peak of The Chief: Up until today, my body was feeling great and all those hours in the gym (thanks Joel, Joe, Linda, and Jean-Paul), all the miles on my bike and on trails, and all my ice time in the rink was paying off. Ha...I spoke too soon. The Stawamus Chief, or The Chief as it's referred to by the locals, is the landmark typically associated with Squamish. The Chief is a destination for rock climbing enthusiasts and rates up there with Yosemite. Today, we weren't going to climb the rock, but rather take it on via the backside and hike up to the second peak. Piece of cake...not! Total trip was only going to be 9k but the elevation gain was 2007'. ... read more

Day 2 - Monday, August 13, 2007 Hike to Elfin Lakes up in Garibaldi Provincial Park: Today, our adventure was a 22k round-trip hike to Elfin Lakes (with a 2500 ft elevation gain) which took us 4.5 hours to complete. The trailhead is located in the Garibaldi Provincial Park on the east side of Squamish. What a day...the sun came out to play and it stayed with us the rest of the week - woohoo! We were treated to the spectacular scenery that surrounds Squamish...the Tantalus Range to the west, Vancouver Island further west, and the Coast Mountain Range to the east and north of us. The hike to Elfin Lakes was beautiful and we were all giddy from the fresh mountain air. It was definitely a place I could've spent more time exploring but that ... read more

Day 1 - Sunday, August 12, 2007 Rock climbing on The Smoke Bluffs: I woke up to your typical Pacific Northwest weather - overcast and looking like there was a chance of rain. I was ecstatic! Where exactly is Squamish, BC you ask? Well, it's about one hour north of Vancouver on the Sea to Sky highway heading to Whistler. And, why did I pick this place to celebrate my recent decision to leave my desk job in San Francisco and move back to the northwest to pursue a new career in outdoor recreation? Well, read on... These adventures actually took root almost two years ago at the Bearfoot Bistro in Whistler while noshin' on some oysters and champagne after a day on the slopes. That chance meeting led me to an incredible week-long kayak trip ... read more
