Travel Blog | Ontheroad http://www.travelblog.org/Bloggers/Ontheroad/ Travel adventures in journals and photos from Ontheroad en-us Tue, 10 Nov 2009 01:39:26 +0000 Tue, 10 Nov 2009 01:39:26 +0000 Farewell Africa Well I only have 6 minutes of internet time and Mike is waiting for me at our new favorite resaraunt so i will make this short and sweet just like this trip has been.I awoke this morning to rain. Not exactly what I wanted for our last beach day but the sky would eventually clear enough to give me a few more hours basking in the sun. Although I think we are both quite excited qbout the new schoo http://www.travelblog.org/Africa/Senegal/Cape-Verde-Peninsula/Dakar/blog-85653.html more from the beach It's not the vacation that I'm bored with. It's sitting around a pool all day that is probablly very good for us both now but it doesn't exactly suit my personality type. If we were charging round having adventures then I'd be a happy camper but we don't have enough time left for that and it is important we get back feeling refreshed and ready for action. I just get a little antsy just hanging http://www.travelblog.org/Africa/Senegal/Cape-Verde-Peninsula/Dakar/blog-85193.html Message from the beach Hey Suze thanks for the info you sent. Just starting to get to the end of my tether with this beach business. I'll be raring to go when I get back that's for sure. At least I've finished my books and have got back into swimming. I wonder if the pool at Tufts has hours for outsiders to swim Anyhow we have two more days of poolside lounging and precious little else before the flight. I hope ever http://www.travelblog.org/Africa/Senegal/Cape-Verde-Peninsula/Dakar/blog-85188.html Beach time in Dakar After being extorted by scoundrels at Bamako airport who lied and cheated us as we left the country they were official immigration officers but their uniforms belied the fact of their corrupt behaviour we arrived in sunny Senegal. There were six different cheats each with a more ludicrous lie than the previous. By time we got on the plane we were saying a less than fond farewell to Mali.I http://www.travelblog.org/Africa/Senegal/Cape-Verde-Peninsula/Dakar/blog-84756.html Return from Timbukto Well what a time we had in Timbukto. It's a striking place the people there are deeply proud of their heritage and especially the Tuareg are incredibly elegant. Where Eric left off we had arrived in this historic tumbledown place after our splendid boatride. The town is dusty and crumbly and away from tourist hotspots the people are interested and interesting. Right behind our hotel the de http://www.travelblog.org/Africa/Mali/North-West/Timbuktu/blog-83957.html We Made It Timbukto Well 3 days later we are finally here. At times it has been doubtful that we would even attempt the journey. Once we left Dogon Country and arrived in Mopti we on a bit of a whim found ourselves buying tickets to board a cargo boat on friday and travel north on the Niger River up to the fabled city.We arrived at the boat around 10 am to fight for a spot to sit. The boat a questionable vesse http://www.travelblog.org/Africa/Mali/North-West/Timbuktu/blog-83404.html Mopti and to Timbukto It's great to hear from everyone again. It's me the evil destroyer of photographs here. My dark plan to permenently delete all of our future memories of the fantastic people and places we encountered in Ghana and Burkina has come to fruition... phwharr ha ha har. Now for my next act.....You'll be pleased to know that after a few days of what politely might be called 'the trots' or less politely http://www.travelblog.org/Africa/Mali/blog-82640.html To Dogon Country and beyond... Well here we are after spending the last few days walking from village to village along and up and down the escarpment that runs through this beautiful part of Mali. Our jornuey here was absolutely one of the most interesting jorneys as of yet both in watching the landscape change and the events of the day. Ougadougou 400 am alarm sounds. The boys get up headed to the bus station to catch t http://www.travelblog.org/Africa/Mali/blog-82412.html Bonjour from Burkina Nous sommes ici en Burkina Faso avec les plus bizarre keyboards et mon pathetic francais. Thanks Almitra for the french spelling help where are your silky french skills when I need them We finally actually received one of the texts you sent Suze and Gia. Sounds like a lovely night. As for us we're in a large fumey sweaty rainy city.We got our first healthy dose of french practice in the tax http://www.travelblog.org/Africa/Burkina-Faso/Centre/Ouagadougou/blog-80815.html Farewell to Ghana Well the time has finally come to head north into Burkina Faso. I am a bit sad to leave Ghana actually. It has been a tremendous few weeks. The people the food the nature have all exceeded my expectations. There is a large part of me that wants to spend more time here on the coast and see the few places we didn't have time to see. However September first and our departure from Dakar is qui http://www.travelblog.org/Africa/Ghana/Upper-East/Bolgatanga/blog-80545.html Mole National Park We were surrounded by moles. They advanced teeth bared snarling Eric screamed.....You've probably guessed that Mole was not a park dedicated to our scurrying underground cousins instead it was a brilliant park filled with elephants antelopes monkeys baboons warthogs and irridescent birds. We stayed at the Mole 'moleay' Motel. This was a fascinating place. It is perched on a cliff above http://www.travelblog.org/Africa/Ghana/Northern/Tamale/blog-80322.html Tamale Take 3 I am so sick off this entry This is my third attempt to do this blog. Both other ones involved me typing a ton only for everthing to get lost. Those of you have seen me type will understand my frustration.Pete great to hear from you say hello to everyone for me.Suze Gia oh my Lord whatever nextEric will write back to mom and dad in the next few days. We're now in Northern Ghana after http://www.travelblog.org/Africa/blog-79398.html Back in Accra Before we write our blog after actually if you must know we wanted to comment on your commentsFastmanNH As far as the Ted William's Tunnel is concerned I am sure it was constructed with the same precision and elegance as the dirt roads we are riding onMichael Walker We hope so too this is a magical place.Rachel D. I suggest closing your eyes screaming and then run as fast as you ca http://www.travelblog.org/Africa/Ghana/Greater-Accra/Accra/blog-78059.html Elmina Castle Good Lord it's the masters of melodrama here again shaking the foundations of reality one branch at a time. Having just finished reading Eric's gatorade inspired version of Kakum we have a few errata to addressThe picture was one he found on the internet we're trying to get the real pictures up now. The 'alligators' were 'crocodiles'. For 89 ft read 56ft. The three foot bully croc chased http://www.travelblog.org/Africa/Ghana/blog-76506.html Kakum National Park and the Aligators Well today has been a full day to say the least. I never would have thought that vacationing could be so exhausting We woke op early this morning to go to Kakum national Park and Animal Refuge. By getting there early we had hoped to see some of the monkeys but had no luck. While there we went on the world's highest rope bridge and yes I did say we. Definately one of the scariest things I http://www.travelblog.org/Africa/Ghana/Central/Cape-Coast/blog-76278.html Cape Coast School For The Deaf This is our second day in Cape Coast. Last night we stayed up late talking to Richard the fascinating Manager of the Hotel. He lived in America for thirty five years and recently returned to retire in his homeland. His perspective was particularly illuminating and humorous he told us a tale of land greed and avarice that beggars belief but we will share that story with you in another place. http://www.travelblog.org/Africa/blog-76012.html Cape Coast We are in Cape Coast after three days struggling to cope with staying on a beach for a few days being the only guests at a classy hotel with loads of friendly and kind staff boogy boards coconut palms lovely beach constant great waves absolutely fascinating villages swarming with children running up to meet us calling 'hello how are you' in musical cadences that resembled birds cable tv http://www.travelblog.org/Africa/blog-75746.html Day two in Ghana Having a fab time. I didn't yet get to see Eric's entry from yesterday but he claims to have accurately described our day. Today is even more humid than yesterday. Sweat is pouring out of me as if from a faucet much to Eric's amusement. We did another epic walk today covering some of the same ground as yesterday but this time with a couple of missions in mind. Hopefully Eric will load up the p http://www.travelblog.org/Africa/Ghana/Greater-Accra/Accra/blog-74428.html Let the adventure begin So last night we arrived around 1000 at night. I won't go into the the details of our flights or say too much about the 9 hour layover in Milan. What I will say is that it cost me 10 for a coke and an orange soda at the airport which is more than we spent on an amazing meal of chicken and fried rice just moments ago. We both cashed in 50 for euros so we could go into the city for a couple of http://www.travelblog.org/Africa/Ghana/Greater-Accra/Accra/blog-74133.html And we're off Mike says here we go here we go here we goI don't really have much to say but I am looking forward to the jungle meat.
