After hotel check out and entrusting our surplus luggage to the Marriott’s concierge, we took a short taxi ride to Aeroparque, the local airport dedicated to flights within Argentina. As it was now common for us on this trip, this taxi driver also had several recommendations for us once he learned that we were going to Iguazú. He warned us to stay away from a place named “Tres Naciones” (Three Nations) close to the border with Paraguay and Brazil where several tourists had been victims of crime in the recent past. The check in and security process at Aeroparque was straightforward and we soon reached the gate area. Our Aerolineas Argentinas flight was scheduled to depart at 12:55 PM from Gate 7, located almost at the center of the long terminal. When the time came for ... read more

Sergio, Joaquín, and I decided to visit one of the areas considered the favorite natural playground for “Porteños” wanting to get away from the glass-and-concrete surroundings of Buenos Aires during the weekends. “El Tigre” (or The Tiger, in English) is the destination and had been highly recommended by our various book guides and also by at least one of the many taxi drivers that had volunteered information to us. Our point of departure was Retiro Station, just a quick walk across Plaza San Martin (three city blocks from the Marriott). The place was very busy with travelers and commuters coming and going. Some of them were carrying heavy luggage in tow; some others just whatever was needed for the day. We quickly located a ticket window and paid for our fare. The attendant pointed us to ... read more

The first order of business after our usual breakfast at the Marriott was to go to the Brazilian consulate to request our tourist visas. Once again, our hotel’s location proved to be very convenient since the consulate address was within walking distance (in between Retiro and Recoleta, over 9 de Julio Avenue). Once there, we went through security and joined a moderately long line of applicants waiting for their turn to speak with one of the three or four consulate officials behind service windows. When our turn came, we were given the bad news: it would take a minimum of three business days for our visas to be issued. That meant that the soonest that we could depart for Iguazú was Friday May 19, or most likely Saturday, May 20. Considering that our last day in ... read more

After some great fun over the weekend, Sergio, Joaquin, and I needed to take care of some vacation “business”. We had decided prior to leaving Atlanta that we were going to have enough time during our vacation to visit at least two major sites in Argentina; one of them Buenos Aires, and we were leaning for Iguazú Falls as the second site. Since we did not have any reservations for air travel to get to Iguazú or for lodging once there, finding a travel agency and making reservations was high priority in the agenda for Monday. Joaquin had made up his mind about the leather jacket he wanted to buy at Dalla Fontana and Sergio had as well, so after breakfast we headed for the shop on Reconquista St. to have their measurements taken and to ... read more

After our usual buffet-style breakfast at the Marriott, we were forced to make a big decision: There were several places and events in Buenos Aires that are best to visit on Sundays but it would had been impossible for us to cover them all in one day. On this particular day, there was a major football match (or soccer, as this worldwide sport is known in the U.S.) between the prestigious BA team “Boca Juniors” and the team Olimpo from Bahía Blanca for the 2006 national championship. Going to a football match in Buenos Aires was another item in our list of things to see and do so going to this particular match was certainly a golden opportunity for witnessing first-class South American football. The other possibilities included going to “Feria de Mataderos”, a folk festival ... read more

Before departing for Argentina on Thursday afternoon, right when the limo arrived at our home to take us to the Atlanta airport, I realized that I had misplaced my small Moleskine notebook and did not remember where it was until we had left the house. So my first priority in Buenos Aires on Saturday was to find a replacement notebook for my travel notes. Sergio and Joaquin were not too thrilled about having to follow their father on a search for a stationary store, but they were lucky, since I actually found one selling agendas and pocket calendars relatively quickly. A 3 ½” x 6” agenda was the closest thing to my Moleskine and would have to do. Next, we headed for another leather store recommended by Lonely Planet. We crossed 9 de Julio Avenue’s all ... read more

Sergio, Joaquín and I landed in Buenos Aires at around 7:00 AM local time, after an overnight, 9-hour flight from Atlanta. Going through Immigration, customs, and out into the general area of Ezeiza International Airport did not take any time at all and soon enough, we were looking for ways to get from the airport to our hotel in downtown BA. Having heard from Argentinean friends that using “remise” (cars w/ drivers for hire) was one of the best ways to get around, we soon discovered a remise service window upon exiting from customs and decided to give them a try (at 69 Argentinean Pesos or about US $23 for the three of us). The trip from the airport on remise was fast and comfortable... Our driver was surprised about our Spanish Language skills after learning ... read more
