In true vegas style, our room was really dark and we had no idea what the time was. So after an extended lay-in, we decided to risk going to the downtown part of vegas to find food that we could actually afford. Luckily we had a very nice meal at a little mexican restaurant and got out alive. Fearing for our lives slightly, we headed back to the comfort of the main strip. The afternoon was spent wandering around the 'posh' casinos (belaggio, mirage, etc) and finding some entertainment for the evening. It was decided that we would go and see 'cirque du soleil', Mystere; when in rome... After a beer or two, we headed back to the room for a shower and change of clothes, before taking full advantage of the promotional drink offers which ... read more

We got up early for the second morning running (a P.B. for the previous few months) and after stocking up on breakfast we headed west to Nevada. The first port of call was the Hoover Dam and when we arrived we were not quite as impressed as we thought we might be! Having said that, it was still an impressive structure and we were able to drive across the top ridge. Just to the north of the dam was the construction site for a new bypass. Infact, this was more interesting to us since the bridge was precariously hanging over the cliff face. Las Vegas was only 30 miles from the Hoover Dam and we pushed on. We made a quick detour to Wendy's for an assortment of burgers and then hit "The Strip". Being the ... read more

We got up early for a change and made the most of our complimentary breakfast. (a few extra items were also smuggled out for snacks later on!). It was 80 miles to the south rim of the Grand Canyon and we arrived bright and early (well before midday anyway!). The next 2 hours were then spent driving along the accessible parts of the south rim and visiting the numerous view points. By the early afternoon we felt we had exhausted the scenic sights and drove back towards Flagstaff. Lunch was Subway once again and the remaider of the day was spent in and around the hotel room. The hotel had a nice swimming pool and spa but since we had been in them the previous night and nearly lost our eyes due to excess chlorine, we ... read more

We had a long way to drive and so made the effort to get out of bed before 9am. We were packed and on the road by 9.30 and heading east towards Arizona. After a few hours we crossed the border into Arizona and made it to Phoenix by mid afternoon. We stopped briefly for a coffee before pushing on the last 140 miles north to Flagstaff. This was to be our base camp for visiting the Grand Canyon. When we arrived, it was getting dark so we checked into a hotel, went to Subway for our classic dinner and relaxed in the room as we were all pretty tired!... read more

As usual, the day began late! We decided the zoo was an expensive excursion and plus we had already seen plenty of animals on our journey (and lived with them)! As a result, we headed towards the coast for a day on the beach. We drove the short distance to Mission Beach to find that the weather was surprisingly foggy. This did not deter us and we set up camp. After half an hour we became restless and headed towards Burger King. We refuelled and decided that the beach was not for us. Instead we headed back to our hotel to make the most of the pool, spa and ping-pong table. In the latter part of the afternoon we headed for downtown San Diego and more specifically the Gas Lamp Quarter. We returned to the Mexican ... read more

As we were so close to the Mexican border, we decided on taking a day trip to Tijuana. Wanting to make a day of it, we got ourselves out of bed at 8am and drove the 15 miles south to the border. The rules of of hire car stated that we must not cross into Mexico, so we parked at a motel close to the border and casually walked across. We walked through 2 turnstiles and were in Mexico without even seeing an immigration officer. Surprised at how easy it had been, we headed directly to the information centre. After retrieving a map and getting some tips we walked the short journey into central Tijuana. On the way, we were joined by an older American who asked to walk with us as "it was safer". This ... read more

In the morning we checked out the room and headed for 'the OC' baby! First stop was Newport. We tried to drive around the houses but they were mainly gated communities and so it was hard to see the likes of Julie Cooper walking around. Although, some of the views from the top of Newport were amazing. We headed on to Laguna beach which was much of the same and stopped at 'Ruby's diner' for a lunch of various burgers and fries. The food was surprisingly good! With our hotel for the next few nights already booked, we battled on toward San Diego and the 'Seven Seas Best Western'. Ollie and Dale went to do a bit more shopping at yet another shopping mall, while Mark played in the pool. We took a quick drive into ... read more

After exhausting most of LA yesterday, we decided to checkout of the hotel and hit the LA coast. We started in Santa Monica; parked the car and took a walk around the main sites of the area. The pier was decent and there was plenty going on on the main strip of shops. The beach was nice too, but with high rise hotels lining the coast, it wasn't really a place we were interested in staying too long. As we drove down the coast we passed Venice Beach and then finally reached a place called 'Rodondo', about 5 miles south of LAX. We found a nice 'Best Western' with good facilities and decided to spend the rest of the day hanging out there.... read more

It took a lot of courage, willpower and spirit; but we were determined to make it out of bed for the complimentary breakfast at the hotel. It was a battle of epic proportions, but all 3 of us were downstairs stuffing our faces with bagels before the 10am deadline. Equipped with the USA lonely planet, we decided to 'do' all that LA downtown had to offer in a single tourist orientated day. And boy did we manage it! We even had time to spend all our well earned cash in a out-of-town outlet mall later in the evening. We started with a whistle stop driving tour of 'downtown' LA. We had intented to stop for a little while, but there really didn't seem to be too much there for us. And so, Dale drove a few ... read more

Our bright idea to save money was to stay the night in Honolulu airport and catch our early flight to LAX. However, when we arrived at the airport just after midnight, not only was it not a 24 hour airport, but most of it was open air. Unfazed by the situation, Dale and Ollie nodded straight off (laying on concrete); I think Mark had a bit more trouble. After a healthy breakfast courtesy of Burger King, we boarded our early morning plane to LAX. I was assured by Mark and Ollie that Naveen Andrews ('Saheed' from Lost) was also on our flight, but quite drousy from lack of sleep, I couldn't say I cared too much at the time. Next stop...
