Hello! There's even less people living on the West Coast than anywhere else in NZ... Nothing much up in Greymouth, so I joined the local brewery tour. Sweet. Oli... read more

Hello! Leaving windy Welli for the South Island across the Cook Strait. It was a three and a half hours crossing with the ferry between Wellington and Picton. The region around Nelson is believed to have the best climate in NZ and so there's plenty of orchards around, some of them with hi-tech features like giant fans to prevent frost or UV filter screens. Not too far from Nelson is the Abel Tasman national park in which I spent a day trekking. I went down the coastal track which is really a narrow one with cliffs on one side and impenetrable forest on the other. Something surprising was that although the weather was cold, all the vegetation was so lush and looked tropical. I could have stayed in Wellington to see the 2nd rugby test, but ... read more

Hello! Now in Wellington for a few days. Although very windy and something like 4 times smaller than Auckland, I found Wellington much more enjoyable and lively than Auckland (everyone will agree with that, except Aucklanders I was told), with lots of restaurants and cafes, nothing like Canberra. I shared a dorm with Katharina, Tim and Guillaume, and we had our own ensuite bathroom - a real nice one. It was a bit like having our own home. Had lots of fun and laughter together. As Wellington is NZ's capital, it houses the Parliament which we had an interesting guided tour of. But even better, I was able to attend a cocktail reception for the French and NZ rugby teams held in Parliament. Apart from both teams and staff, the only people there were members of ... read more

Hello! Our main aim here was to do the Tongariro Crossing trek, but couldn't unfortunately because it was closed due to high winds at the crater. So we only stayed one night here. That night we went to the local pub which had a quiz night on. In the end we finished first out of 15 teams, with 36 correct answers out of 50. And the questions were not easy. Not bad at all! It was my first pub's quiz night, so maybe got some beginner's luck... First prize was $50 worth of drinks, but we somehow managed to receive double that amount. I must say that the Kiwis are very nice and friendly people, always calling you bro, sir or darling. I like that! Sweet as. Oli ... read more

Kia ora! On our way to Rotorua, we stopped at Waitomo where I went to see the glowworm caves. As well as the usual stalactites and stalagmites, these caves are home to many glow-worms. Glow-worms are very strange animals; they are larvae that live suspended from cave ceilings and weave sticky threads which trail down and catch flying insects attracted by their luminescent organs. The insect gets paralysed and the glow-worm then sucks it out. The adult form of the glow-worms does not have a mouth (!) and so only lives for 2 or 3 days, just enough time to mate, lay eggs and die. Hard to believe sci-fi animals but there's actually a museum about them and if you want to check them out, their nickname is Arachnocampa luminosa. Anyway, we boarded a rowboat and ... read more

Ka mate! Ka mate! I bought a ticket to go and see the All Blacks-France rugby match in Eden Park just 2 days before the game. I took the cheapest seat so I was in the nice and noisy part of the stadium. Great atmosphere! It was very one sided with the ABs nearly always playing in the French team's side. The game ended 42-11 for New Zealand, and they didn't even seem to be pushing very hard. But I must say that many of the best French players stayed at home because of club duty. After the game, I met some French sports journalists who had been in the French team's dressing room; they said the players looked battered like they'd never seen them like that before and predicted a bigger defeat for the second ... read more

Hello! Now adding a New Zealand leg to my trip, starting in Auckland. The city of Auckland is not built on 7 hills but on 48 volcanoes! So there's lots of going up and down. I don't think I've come across a single flat street... It's quite spread out, but even then, that's a lot of volcanoes in a same place... It's also the city with the biggest Pacific Islanders population, with people coming from Fiji, Samoa, Tonga etc... With over a million of the four million New Zealanders, it is the big city in NZ. Auckland too has its own nice bay, harbour and Harbour Bridge which goes with it. Sweet. Oli ... read more

Hola! I took a Chilean air company which dropped me in Auckland on its way home. As I checked in, I was told that I was upgraded to business class... I dared to ask why... and the girl at the counter said that they needed more people in business class and that she chose me because she found I was a "nice guy"! Hasta luego. Oli ... read more

G'day! Or should it be ni hao? Taking advantage of my strategic location near to Sydney's Chinatown, I found a travel agent offering very cheap day-trips. Why not go to Canberra? And their price for it was 4 times less expensive than similar offers with other travel agents. I even checked the price of a train or coach journey to Canberra by public transport and even that was more expensive! A real steal deal I found. The only thing was that it was intended for Chinese tourists and that the guide was only going to speak Chinese. But never mind! I must add that Canberra is about 4 hours away from Sydney, so the day was something like 8 hours driving to Canberra and back, and less than 3 hours actually visiting Canberra. When Australia became ... read more

G'day mates! Just been to the Blue Mountains today. En route, we stopped at Sydney Olympic Park and the Telstra Stadium, which were built for the 2000 Olympics. The Blue Mountains are about 2 hours out of Sydney. They cover an area the size of Ireland and are listed as World Heritage, at least a portion of them. John the guide was very good with a fine sense of humour and loads of local knowledge. The extensive Blue Mountains forests are mostly made up of very tall eucalypt trees and of giant fern which grow into trees. All this vegetation filters the sunlight quite a lot and so it's much darker and chillier down on the ground. There are many little villages around with neat houses and tidy gardens, antique shops, old ladies doing charities or ... read more
