Getting ready to head home in a few hours. But it's been an activity-filled 3 days after Christmas. Dec 26 We we're treated to a very nice lunch and afternoon at the Last Chukker at the Manila Polo Club by Maria's cousin Ger. His kids (the cousins) joined and took everyone on a nice walking tour of the club while Maria went to a nearby shopping mall. Ger and I hit golf balls at the driving range with the kids and enjoyed ice cold San Miguel Beer. Dec 27 We visited Maria's other cousins about 90 minutes south of Manila in the town of Santa Rosa. They live in a very nice neighborhood and the kids enjoyed the day using the community gym to play hoops and swimming in the pool. I got myself invited to ... read more

As our peeps wake up to Christmas Morning on the +8 GMT zones, let me wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas. We are lucky and fortunate to count you all as Family and Friends. We love the feedback we get from writing this blog. For anyone considering travel like this in the future, this is a fun and relaxing project to do during downtime. And it's permanent...so you can revisit this site in 10 years when the kids are older and take a walk down memory lane. Let me get on with it. Though the sun never broke through in DaNang, we still had a great time. Aside from an outing we took to Hoi An, we stayed close to our beautiful Hyatt resort. In this part of the world? Should definitely stay here. The beach ... read more

Got some pictures to share. As promised, less reading.... Most images from the town of Hoi An....an ancient (like 2000 years) maritime trading town about 20 mi south of DaNang. DaNang was developed by the French and later by the US in the run up to the conflict 50+ years ago due to its central location and is the major port here. HoiAn reminds one of a very old Balboa Island.... read more

Let's begin this post with our first activities with the family last weekend. On Saturday afternoon we travelled about an hour south of Manila to the municipality of Pampango. Each year they host a "lantern parade" with the different neighborhoods designing, building and displaying their lantern in a big competition. Think of it as a small-scale Macy's thanksgiving day parade that features the lanterns-or Parol's-instead of inflated floats/balloons. In the Philippines a Parol is a seasonal star-shaped lantern that appears throughout the nation during the holiday season. They are made of all different types of material but the original Parol's were make of colored paper or shells with a frame made of bamboo or other type of light ridged material. They are everywhere one looks...hanging from telephone poles, buildings, bridges; in store windows; on or in ... read more

Flight was shorter than anticipated....in the past this flight stopped in Guam for 45 minutes to an hour before continuing on but not this time. We arrived at about 4:45am local time, waited on hour for our bags then off to the family home in Malabon. Malabon is a city in North Metro Manila of about 360,000 people. Densely packed, it is a mix of residential, business and manufacturing and is also a local center for the local seafood trade. The city was founded over 400 years ago and is important due to its geographical location: it is close to 2 rivers and the coast of Manila Bay. The rivers provide shipping access to parts of the interior of the main island. Due to its important role with the local seafood/fish trade, the town is always ... read more

Our Christmas schedule in Manila was very nice and low key. We spent Christmas Eve at the residence of Maria's uncle. The kids opened gifts after a very nice dinner of Pancit(a local noodle dish), barbecue, two kinds of adobo (which is chicken, beef or pork cooked in vinegar and soy sauce), fish with Chinese broccoli and mushrooms, pasta salad and steamed veggies. Oh yeah! I forgot to mention rice, plenty of cold San Miguel beer and yummy desserts. Maria and I stayed over night there and the kids went for another sleepover with Maria's cousin's daughter, Amber. Uncle Romy had breakfast ready for us on Christmas morning and we spent a couple hours enjoying some adult time. Maria's cousin Tricia, who flew in from the midwestern US was leaving the next day and we hadnt ... read more

Ok, back to the blog. Internet access has been spotty the last 2-3 days but I will do my best to catch up. After returning from Bohol, we took a day trip about an hour south of manila to maria's cousin's house. Michael and Elna live in a nice gated subdivision that sports a community swimming pool and rec-center. The kids got some more swimming in and we had a wonderful lunch at a local Chinese restaurant. Michael and Elna got dessert from a popular boutique bakery, Contis, and spent the remaining part of the afternoon eating (see the pics) and swimming. Erin spent the following 2 nights with Amber, Maria's cousin's 8 year-old daughter. Last Monday the 20th I went golfing at Capitol Hills GC with Maria's Uncle. The weather really held up for us ... read more

.......Erin and I backed up our big tour of Bohol with a morning of boating and snorkeling on Wednesday 12/16. As previously arranged through Maria's cousin, Meanne, Erin and I met Vito and his first mate (I didnt get his name) at the beach just next to our resort. We boarded the "Aldrin", which is a motorized outrigger boat common to the smaller coastal towns. Vito got the engine started after 3 mighty pulls on the starter rope (yup, just like a lawnmower) the engine roared to life and bon voyage to Maria, Antie Chi, Jack and Joseph. We made our way due west to Baliciasag Island which is about 1 1/2 miles away from where we are staying. Once we dropped anchor we met our snorkeling guide, Wingh. We paddled a short way out to ... read more

Where to start?? We had a very adventurous day indeed. Woke up to a beautiful sunrise, another great meal here at Amorita and then we met our guide, Tatsky. Tatsky greeted us in a nice Toyota Innova which is like a 4-door minivan but smaller and we set out. Our itinerary was to include a visit to the Chocolate Hills, a butterfly farm, a special cave, checking out the largest Philippine python in captivity, hop on a "Floating Resto"--or restaurant boat--for lunch, see Tarsiers and alot more. Before I begin, a little backround on the island of Bohol. Bohol is a large island south of Manila with a land area of about 1590 sq miles and a population of about 1.2 million people. The capital is Tagbilaran City. The main industries are farming, fishing and agriculture ... read more
