Nyingma - David Thompson

I am 53, a registered medical/surgery nurse, formerly a chocolatier, a pastry chef, restaurant owner, fishing boat crew member, and occupational therapist. I work to travel, mostly with a backpack under fairly basic conditions where I get out of the cities and into the countryside. I speak English and Spanish fairly well, French and Italian less so. I plan to retire in about 8 years and will then move to Northern Thailand and volunteer with Medecins sans Frontieres and as an English teacher in refugee villages.

A small dust storm from the roof of our hotel
As I watched the verdant and green countryside roll by outside the window on the train, I turned to Dan and said "Dude! Do you realize what we are doing this very minute???" Without looking up from the book he was reading, Dan said "No, what?" I began to pump my arms back and forth like a steam engine's wheels, "Don't you know we're riding on the Marrakesh Express, "Don't you know we're riding on the Marrakesh Express, "They're taking us to Marrakesh. "All on board the traaaain!" Looking up from his book with a deadpan expression on his face, Dan [View Full Entry]

Old medina walls in Fez
After a couple of days in Meknes, we went to the train station and, while talking to and petting a cat, struck up a conversation with a well dressed man by the name of Rida. He told us he was an engineer from Fez just returning home, and that he would be pleased if we could meet him for some tea at 1800 that night and gave us a shred of paper with the name of a restaurant scribbled on it. We got on the train to Fez, and ignoring the "mosquitos" as Rida had called the touts and cab drivers [View Full Entry]

Dan at the train station in Tanger
After a couple of days in Tanger to orient ourselves and figure out a game plan, my buddy Dan and I set out by train to Meknes. We arrived at the gare or station in about three hour's time and following the directions of the Lonely Planet, made our way to the aptly named Hotel Majestic. We were greeted by the affable desk clerk and shown upstairs through a dimly lit hallway that boasted an intricate Escheresque tiled floor to our room, which was large and roomy with a balcony that would serve quite nicely for drying laundry. There was also [View Full Entry]

Blue doors in the medina of Tangier
Ever since I heard the haunting lyrics and music of Donovan's song "Tangier", I have wanted to go there, and now, here I was! I had been thinking about going to Morocco for a while, as I had been already to Turkey, and Egypt, and I had enjoyed them both. I really enjoyed going to Muslim countries and talking with people of that faith, coming to a better understanding of them and hopefully helping them to come to a better understanding of Americans in general and of me in particular. Then my best buddy and I both saw "The Bourne Ultimatum" [View Full Entry]
