March 8th 2006

It was a beautiful morning, 78 degrees and virtually cloudless. We met the Scott's friend, Penny, at a nearby restaurant and headed to "Long Ears" together, a renowned coffee plantation owned by Wendell Branco, in the Honoka'a congregation. About ten years ago, he retired from the Waimea fire department and took up the hobby of growing coffee per a friend's suggestion. He's known for his aged coffee, a noticeably popular choice discovered quite by accident - he stored more coffee than he was selling at the time, and after trying the aged coffee quite some time later, he decided its unique, low-acid flavor would take off. His judgements were correct; his famous aged coffee is now in high demand and is served by the elite restaurants of the islands. His coffee plants surround his humble abode ... read more

Again, i couldn't sleep in this morning, as tired as i was. But somehow i feel well-rested this morning. It's beautiful outside... i hope it stays that way for my last week. I remember what we've done recently but i could not tell you the exact order, so i'll just sketch out a few things... "One day" we went out on a home-school field trip for the kids to the vanilla factory... They get the vanilla from orchids... did i tell u this story already? I'm getting deja vu.. anyway that was fun, Melia and Bryan came too. I have a couple pictures from that too. I'll also put up the wet pants pictures that i promised from Laupahoehoe. I'll try and throw some others in there too from the past couple of weeks. Sorry if ... read more

March 5th 2006

I am all kinds of tired at the moment so i'll try to shorten this as much as possible... i woke up at 3:00 this morning and called Bryan to see if he was still coming cuz the scott's said he loves to sleep and they really didnt think he was gonna come... so anyway i called him and he answered immediately and said he's in the neighborhood and will be here in 10 seconds. He was so awake and hyper i was like whaaaat... lol but anyway I'll write more later. And i know i keep saying that, but for real i will... i'll just write enough to be able to go into detail later. So now i'll put up a load of pictures and describe them as well as i can. Dave took almost ... read more

I just wanted to see if i would get any comments if i didn't update. lol jk... we've been out a lot lately so i haven't been able to update. I'll put pictures up later, but i just wanted to touch bases and assure you all i'm still alive. :) I can't win - i can't tell you how many comments i've gotten putting down my latest pictures... but clearly, i was trying to get you all to appreciate the beauty of blurred art. And my buddy Ray Charles was helping me out... lol sorry i dont know what happened, but i'll try and get them back up and in focus. A couple days ago we went to the beach, named '69' after the lightpole where you turn. Unfortunately i didn't take any pictures, although Dave ... read more

February 25th 2006

I think i left with Friday, right? Saturday - just because i knew i was allowed to sleep in as late as possible, of course my eyes spring open at 7:30. Tell me i've gotta be awake by 9, and i'll sleep all day. I'm weird. We did a lot of cleaning and grocery shopping Saturday in preparation of Sunday's plans. The Scott's bookstudy was assigned to feed Sunday's visiting speaker for their hall, so we were going to cook for that; we were asked to bring a covered dish to the party in the afternoon, and since Dave was the outgoing speaker at another hall and a family had us for hospitality, Kathy wanted to make something to bring. Saturday evening, someone from their bookstudy called and said we dont have to bring anything, and ... read more

February 25th 2006

Here are the past couple of days: Yesterday we went to - ok bear with the spelling - Lapahoihoi (ok phonetically, lappa hoy hoy, that should help.) This is where a huge tidal wave wiped out a school full of children in 1946. The *most beautiful* place, i'm tellin ya... then again, how many *the most beautiful places* have i written about so far?? The day we were there the water was so wild, like on the verge of tsunami. No i'm kidding, there was no tsunami action goin on. But Kathy told me this is where everyone comes to swim, like little 2 yr olds swim here. I'm looking around and there's giant rocks in the water and 3498730 foot waves and there goes baby jim floating by. Well not floating by, that's a bit ... read more

February 23rd 2006

I've got quite a bit of material tonight... but for real guys, it's not so exciting in writing. In my short time here so far, i've experienced things i couldn't even imagine - i didnt know i was missing out because i honestly didn't what i was missing. We drove about 15 minutes down the road to Mauna Lani (?) beach to see the sunset. I'll tell ya, i absolutely fell in love with this beach... the grass is so soft and green and scattered with palm trees... it opens up into sugar soft white sand enclosed in naturally placed stone walls and slowly disappears into the crystal clear, sparkling ocean. We walked across the shore (only ankles dad ;) and noticed a huge turtle bathing in the sun... i honestly thought he was dead, but ... read more
