After a local study shockingly revealed that there is a high rate of school dropouts (ca. 50%), primarily young girls, within coastal fishing towns and villages throughout Ghana, The Child Education and Welfare Fund decided to set up The Mother Teresa School for Girls in Senya Bereku. Senya Bereku is a coastal town in the Awutu-Effutu-Senya District in the Central Region of Ghana. As a natural consequence of its location, the sea provides the main occupation through fishing. Whilst the men do the actual catching of the fish, the women process and market the fish to domestic consumers. The problems are multiple. Senya Bereku is one of many fishing towns and villages in Ghana, and throughout the coast of West-Africa. Fighting in a competitive market, often lacking basic technology to process or preserve the fish over ... read more
I've always been one of those believers that travel blogging would be a lame thing, but not yet sure if thats mostly because i cannot be asked to figure out how to work the overly complex sites or if im plain lazy. And how much fun is it really for someone to read a travel blog? Lord knows, i have had a couple of people fall asleep while showing them the thousands of photos from various places. "And this is when we took a walk." But hey im going to start a travel blog, because if you don't want to read them you don't have to. Easy Peasy. Although, my personal opinion is that you should keep reading, because well, i wrote them :) Now I'm in Accra, Ghana working as an Aiesec and Norwegian FK ... read more

NOVEMBER 2007 I'm sorry but this has been an amazingly weird day so far, and i just wanted to tell you ALL the details before they slip my mind and my only focus is hand washing my underwear. Yesterday i found out that the (newly elected-not the warlord-for you jason) president of Sierra Leon was coming to our office today, because he is a former insurance broker and a student of my boss. He is in Ghana trying to find investment or firms interested in rebuilding Sierra Leon (for those of you that did not know there was a horrible civil war there). My boss is building a bank there (like you casually decide) and an insurance brokerage firm, conclusion he is RICH. So Nina (yes today i refer to myself in third person) forgets sorta ... read more
For those of you who aren't acquainted with turtle girl...yet...it includes me (obviously) carrying a heavy backpack...the rest is self explanatory. To start off i did not have a heavy backpack, but after a series of 'mistakes' in Togo it turned out that way................... Crossing the border into Lome was really easy.. There didn't seem to be any obvious system and the constant wind blowing our documents away didn't speed up the process, if there was one..Anyways after the border nonsense i was DETERMINED to find a taxi moto (moped) to get to our hotel..So whilst everyone was changing money i spotted MY MOTO MAN. There he was...a giant piece of muscle with one of those haircuts that MC Hammer has, extremely tight denim jacket with old man glasses like mine on a moto. oh man ... read more
