I started this Blog when I found out that I was going to train in Colorado Springs for the World University Games in Turkey. I thought it would be a nice way to keep in touch with everyone while I trained and traveled. Since then the travel doors swung wide open and this Blog has turned into a true travel journal. The ease of access to, basically, the world is something I am very lucky to have. With the doors to the world open and the travel bug biting me every chance it can I know there will be many more stories to tell and tons of pictures to share. Enjoy!

The name of my street is Clocheville. It is located very near the heart of old town Tours and there is very rarely a parking spot within three blocks. When I first arrived i had the choice between two places, neither one of which seemed at first glance to be very homey. The difference between the two was simple; the first choice was older, more rustic, and lacked conveniences like a shower or a washing machine; while the second choice was compact, sterile, and had everything to make life easy. The more rustic of the two was within walking distance to most of the interesting things in the city and it had a familiar smell that seemed to be like an old friend welcoming me in. Maybe it was the bigger kitchen or maybe just the ... read more

One week ago today my future was very uncertain. I had arrived only a couple days before and was on day number two of a try out. I was still feeling the effects of jet lag and had not fully adjusted to the rich french cuisine. I had been working hard but on the second day of the try out I did not feel like I was playing as well as I should and thoughts of being sent home were starting to creep in through the frustration. In fact to end my second day of training I missed two serves in a row and my side lost. A quick stretch and a long walk to the locker room was followed by an even longer walk back as someone told me the general manager and head coach ... read more

And the saying goes, "practice makes perfect." If thats the case then getting my stuff in a bag, tying up loose ends, and saying my good-byes should be similar to a hot knife through butter. Instead it feels more like I'm pulling my head out of a jumbo sized Chinese-finger-trap whilst walking through a large vat of quicksand. Throw in a stomach full of gluten, shake and bake in a plane for 10 hours and Vua-la!! ......the adventure begins. If you didnt understand all that basically heading out here was hard. If you dont know where "here" is, allow me to update everyone on my status. A couple of weeks ago I got a call from an agent saying there was a team in France that may be interested in my services. After much debate and ... read more

Yesterday as I pulled into my new home an iguana the size of a small dog wiggled its way across the driveway. Today a gecko enjoyed the view with me as I ate breakfast on the balcony. The two sweat shirts and four pairs of jeans I packed have not even made it out of their bags and I've gained a new appreciation for tank tops or shirts with cut off sleeves. The weather is warmer, my room is bigger, the food is tastier, and Costco is just around the corner. Other than the occasional 6 inch spider or the 25 mosquito bites every night its hard to find things to complain about here. Four years ago I was here and it was so incredibly foreign. I felt like I was in a whole new world ... read more

A pile of Christmas lights lie lazily in the corner reminding me of where my festive tree once stood. All around the city lights and decorations have disappeared. Only the occasional forgotten Santa or star still hang from balconies acting as a similar cruel reminder, that the nice part about having cold whether is over. Christmas time has always held some of my favorite memories. From the anticipation of opening my presents when I was young to the togetherness and security of my family as I grew older, the cold whether and bright lights have always been something I look forward to. Replacing my normal anticipation this year was Kaitlin coming for a visit. I knew from the moment i landed all those months ago that i would have to find all the best things around ... read more

One of the few days we had off in the past few weeks was due to a national holiday. The holiday consists of..... well I'm not 100% sure but it has to do with Greece's eventual defeat of Spain when the Spanish tried to invade and take over. The closest equivalent in an American holiday would probably be the Fourth of July. Rather than shoot off fire works and get drunk this Greek holiday is celebrated with a huge military parade. Just about everyone in the city, skips work(nothing new there), buys a flag and heads to the parade route early so they can get a good seat. Nathan and i got there a little late but found a good spot. We promptly lost that spot however when we went on a little search to find ... read more

So its been just about two weeks and things are finally starting to come together here in Greece. it was tough for the first week or so because i did not really have internet or a car or money for that matter but all that is now in the past and I have been exploring and trying to figure everything out here. Like so many other places the culture and daily life here is quite different than what im use to. My daily routine usually starts somewhere around 10 or 11AM for our first training session. After a quick shower most of the guys from the team will go to a coffee bar and have a "frappa." A frappa consists of one part instant coffee and one part sugar, add some water and ice and begin ... read more

So..... since i have been here i have not been publishing to many blogs. Despite the great responses i normally enjoy and repeated requests to write, WritE, WRITE!!!, i have not been able to sit down and type about my experience here. I could not figure out why this was such a problem until i had a conversation with my father. I realized, after our talk, that there are two things holding me back. First i realized that so many of my stories come from dialog. After i have told someone a story it is a million times easier to sit down and make my story even more granderrerererr. Without this dialog i lose the motivation to sit down and type. The other(and i think more important)reason, i will try to explain using plugs. Interested?........ then ... read more

This one will be short and quick but i thought everyone should know whats going on. We played Friday night for a chance to go to the finals. Our opponent was the only team that we had not beaten and the guys had a bad history of falling apart against them. Diego and I had talked before the match and came to the conclusion that it was going to be up to us if we were to win. The first set went to us mainly because of Diego's play. The second set was a sea-saw battle and when the score hit 19-19 Diego went up for a block and came down hard on the opponents foot. He immediately collapsed and began to yell in pain. I have been around this sport for a long time now ... read more

So i see its been 23 days since my last blog. I wish i could say that i've been out experiencing new things and thus to busy to write. Alas the opposite has been true. Since my last blog the days have been vanishing in mundane daily habits with only a few hiccups to break the monotony. This has not been completely unhelpful though as i have been able to focus on my rehab and physical shape. Sorry mom i still haven't gained any weight but my knee is doing well and the rest of my body feels as good as it has in a long time. The hiccups i speak of were two events; one was a concert that featured a Queen tribute "band" and the other was the Bahrain F1 Grand Prix. Ill start ... read more
