Antigua Rin: Our first few days in Antigua I spent in bed with the worst ear infection I think I've ever had. I then proceeded to have a chunk of tooth chip off, from rice of all things, and so had to visit the dentist.... Which unfortunately meant that we weren't able to make it up to the organic finca in the mountains for a few days of wholesome recuperation...Grrrr... It did mean that we were in town when there was a shoot out a block up the road though. After a few days, on a recommendation from Isabella, we decided to go on a small hike up a volcano to see some molten lava with Hamish and Cathy. As usual, trying to get a sense of how difficult the walk would be was a challenge. ... read more

San juan del sur Rin: Rainy days in San Juan del Sur inevitably led to afternoons playing cards and drinking Flor de Cana con Fresca with Adam and Taz! Ahhhh, life is good! Movie marathons and a few sessions of mario kart were also had whilst the bottom floor of the small hostel began to flood... Time to move all our possessions off the floor of our room Nicko! Unfortunately the rain meant it was difficult to cross the swollen rivers to get to the good surf beaches, so with some knee deep in swolen river car pushing we managed a few days of surfing. Enough though for me to improve my stance and be able to stand up long enough to actually surf along a wave! Yippee! Despite these waves being barely more than froth ... read more

Nick: So here we are sitting in Miami, Florida. Saying to ourselves - are we still on planet earth - because it feels like we have just been transported to somewhere very alien. Not to say that we didn´t necessarily not like Miami, what with its interesting people, cuban influences, street life and nip-tuck- botox culture. But its just that bang for your buck we´d rather be in a cheap as chips crazy place than another crazy one which is costing us close to a couple of hundred a day. Thats when Rin and I decided to cut our 4 days of Miami back to 2 and fly our butts back into the lands well south of the border. Panama Panama city is.... well... quite a city. You get that rough round the edges feel when ... read more

Rin: It was with quite some excitement that we landed in Quito, Eucador - we were finally going to meet up with Lyndall!!! Staying in the Old Town we pottered around for a few days, visiting the parks and vivarium (reptile enclosures). It was a good chance to sort out our self-guided galapagos trip as well. Being there for a few days meant that we were also able to catch up with Kate and Ryan, who we ... read more

Hi all, Nick Here: yes, its time to say goodbye to Bolivia, land of cheap food, cheap thrills, and cheap gastro and enter the tourist wilds of Peru. We took a bus from copacabanna on the shores of lake titicaca through to puno, and with a quick "Amazing Race" style negotiation managed to jump aboard a moving bus to Arequipa within 5 minutes of our arrival. And amazingly without totally being fleeced of all our cash. Arequipa is a town most renowned for its proximity to the worlds two deepest canyons. Now many of you have heard of some of the natural disasters that the Andes throws out. Especially in Peru where there have been some devastating earthquakes in recent history. Now we recently managed to escape by a few weeks the chaiten volcano disaster. Attached ... read more

Hi all, Nick here: Our next adventure takes us to the heights of the andean cordellias, and then deep into the jungles of the amazon basin in Bolivia. Having essentially acclimatized to the altitude, and getting into the swing of traveling in bolivia, we had actually decided to travel from Uyuni to the silver mining town of Potosi. However due to road blockages by the campesinos (peasants) and minders, we had to strike this off the itinery. Uyuni is a great place to visit the salar, but there is bugger all else to do there. So a quick few investigations and we found out we could leave on a train at 2am in the morning. Apparently there were tickets but we weren't able to buy them until the ticket office opened. Guess what time. 1 am ... read more

Rin here: Landing in El Alto, La Paz, Bolivia quickly put our travels back into perspective and our travelling mojo has returned with gusto! We had an amazing flight from Santiago to La Paz during which the sun rose quickly as we flew ever closer to the altiplano - we even had a glimpse of the salt plains! Walking out of the airport with stunning views of the nearby snowcapped mountains we threw our bags on the roof of the local micro bus, piled ourselves inside the soon to be overcrowded bus and descended into La Paz city proper. There´s nothing quite like a little bit of chaos to keep you on your toes - with that in mind we dropped our bags off at the hostel and set out in search of some lunch. We ... read more

Nick writing here: So your saying yeah right, aliens would stoop to such levels as to steal our laptop and muslibars along with camera chargers and power cables. The story was that we were staying in a private campground in Pisco Elqui in Chile. The Elqui value is meant to be filled with cosmological energy and has had repeated UFO sightings amongst more stranger occurances. The ladron or theif slashed their way in when we were out on a day trip to an observatory on one of the high mountain tops around vicuna. About 400kms north of Santiago. Now to see stars some of you may think that all it requires is a large saucepan on your head and a baseball bat. But in chile it requires cold still dry air only found in the northern ... read more

Hola Chicos y Chicas, Well this is a very belated blog posting. Rin and I have been buzzing along from Chiloe, and we are pretty much a month behind on our blog. Well you cant blame us.... travelling takes up your time, but we are thinking about all of you back there. Also we have had a few hickups along the way including bouts of gastro for rinny and a tent slashing and robbery in Chile. So here´s some pics for our lakes district adventure... more to follow shortly.. The Lakes District Rin and I have spend the last two weeks enjoying autumn in the lakes district. We thought that the cooler and wetter weather had finally put the proverbial tupperware lid on our adventures in the andes, and snap locked our memories of pategonia. We ... read more

Hola todos, The Island of Chiloe saw us travelling in the company of Christian and Marij for much of the way. Amidst the grey skies we tried our hand at hitch hiking again - this time with much more success. The local chiloteans were very accommodating and gave us quite a few lifts to various corners of the island. Chiloe was quite a different landscape to where we have been used to with few mountains and wide pastures, little towns with wooden churches and lots of shingles on their houses. Throughout our trip across the island we amassed around 50 different shingle photos as somewhat of a collectors habit to amuse ourselves in the sleepy little towns. The towns themselves consisted of usually one of the famous or if your just a small town less famous ... read more
