| 23rd June 2009 Sarah | Welcome Home! - From: Looking Back at Our Experience in Taiwan (our last photos) Hello Nick! So good to see your photos and to know that you and Kristen are home safely. Yes, prices are up and spending has not changed much. Old habits die hard I suppose. Until the global economy comes crashing down hard, everyone will keep calling bluff or look to Savior Obama for a solution. How exciting that you've been given this experience to work abroad. OK, enough politics. See you on facebook! :) Sarah |
| 21st April 2009 Nick and Kristen | - From: A Trip to Central Taiwan - Mazu Festival Jim, Our tour did not take us to see those, so those will have to be for another time! :) |
| 21st April 2009 Jim | Sights in Puli - From: A Trip to Central Taiwan - Mazu Festival You didn't mention the Entomological Museum and the marker for the geographic center of the island - both in Puli as well. |
| 12th April 2009 George M. | Geothermal Power Plant - From: Birthday Weekend in Wulai Nick, were you able to find out how much power is actually produced and who uses it? George ... |
| 4th February 2009 Jim | Chinese New Year Noise - From: Singapore and Malaysia "We woke up on Monday morning to loud, banging drums outside of the front of the hotel at 8:30am...It was interesting to witness, but not the first thing you expect to hear in the morning." Actually, having gone through three Chinese New Years in Taiwan, what I'd have expected to hear would have been those drums kicking off at the crack of dawn and not stopping at all the entire day. ;) It sounds like they actually took your waiguo luxing status into account (believe it or not), and that it was a great trip. |
| 2nd February 2009 GEORGE M. | - From: Singapore and Malaysia Nick, I wonder if the snakes were fed before or after you played with them ?!? Great photos ! George M. |
| 29th December 2008 Janie | WOW! - From: Trip to Taroko Gorge Great pics! Am so glad you're having such great adventures. This is something you'll remember for the rest of your lives....and bore your friends to death with when you get home!! (Think Africa!) Hope you had a great Christmas and have a happy New Year. See you soon.....Janie and Wilma |
| 25th December 2008 Mack | Merry Christmas - From: Trip to Taroko Gorge Nice shots, especially of you two. Mack |
| 25th December 2008 George M. | - From: Trip to Taroko Gorge Nick, Thanks for the great photos and being our tour guide. I think that being nice to people and not being rude is a learned skill which most people are never taught at home or school. The same goes for common sense. Yes, it's sad the animals are treated so bad, but I'm sure it's like that in many other parts of the world as well. Definitely enjoy your time off from school. George M. |
| 14th November 2008 Randi | - From: Typhoon Jangmi - Typhoons Are So Boring! That typhoon looks like the rain storm NYC had about a week ago. Typhoons ARE boring. |
| 11th November 2008 Jim | "Don't be hasty..." - From: 60 Degrees in Taipei Be careful; remember those ICLP rooms are just concrete, and by the end of the winter you, too, may be bundling up. Of course, having spent four winters in South Dakota with wind chills below -50, you are correct that the Taipei crowd may not have a full perspective of what "cold" can mean. |
| 7th November 2008 Mama | - From: Hong Kong (香港) !!! Hong Kong is fabulous! I wouldn't have pictured it quite that beautiful, especially nights. You guys look good, that's all I care about. Have a ball, since I live thru your experiences. Keep the pictures coming, I love em....Mom |
| 29th October 2008 paul | - From: Long Train and Bumpy Bus Rides to Nowhere Things have improved a lot since my days there. |
| 15th October 2008 mom | - From: School is in session! Hi you guys, you sure do have the life. We a slaving away in America as you guys sight see all the time. That Catholic Church is just adorable, if you didn't walk down that street you would have missed it entirely...also it looks like Taiwan agrees with you. You both look very happy. Love you both, Mom! |
| 11th October 2008 George M | Watching TV - From: School is in session! Nick & Kristen, the photos are great and there's lots of history there as well. Watching too much financial news can definitely be depressing these days. But, many saw this coming quite some time ago. I'm afraid the worst is yet to come. George ... |
| 29th September 2008 George M | Cadillac Sedan - From: Typhoon Jangmi - Typhoons Are So Boring! Nick, that was a great photo of the vintage sedan. It's probably worth more now then when it was brand new. I'm glad you survived the typhoon and got to practice your movie trivia. As far as the economic situation here, time will tell how it all plays out. But, once the deliveries of the twinkies to the local White Hen or 7-11 stop, we'll know the $700B bailout failed and we're ALL on our own. Please have a great week ahead. |
| 27th September 2008 Diane | - From: Things we love and hate about Taiwan Wow! What beautiful sunsets. And what beautiful photos! I must be a horrible picture taker because none of mine come out that good. I cannot image what it must be like trying to make your way around in a country that not only do you not speak the language, but you can't read it either. I admire your sense of adventure and cannot wait to hear all about it when you get back. But, I must remind you that while you are overseas living it up, America is going to hell in a hand basket! Do you get to read or hear the news? How come our economy has not been the topic of any of your conversations :-) Are we not important??? Does anyone even care? What about meeeeeeee??? Take care guys, love your blog. Diane |
| 24th September 2008 mom | That was huge!! - From: A Ride Through the Mountain Tops Hi, my babies! You both look really happy. The place is beautiful except for that 3 inch spider. Your camera took a great shot of it, though I would forever have nightmares. Luv ya....Mama |
| 22nd September 2008 Janie | - From: A Ride Through the Mountain Tops I'm with you, Kristen....NO CREEPY SPIDERS!! Your pics are wonderful...really gives me a feel of the country. You all have really done a lot in a couple of weeks. The food looks fantastic too. You're a really good writer Kristen...you might think about that as your next career....you have lots of time to practice. Oh, yeah...you're a good writer too Nick....Don't want to hurt any feelings!! Keep those cards and letters coming, folks. Am enjoying my time in Taiwan.....Love, Janie |
| 21st September 2008 Sarah Seiwert | Beautiful - From: A Ride Through the Mountain Tops What beautiful photos (minus that spider)! I wish I could see the sights around you, but this is the next best thing! Cheers, Sarah |
| 19th September 2008 Jim | Bird ID - From: After the Rain I had to check my field guide, but my first impression was correct - that "strange-looking bird" is a Malayan Night-Heron, which (believe it or not) is actually considered fairly difficult to get a good look at and is NOT common in Taiwan. That having been said, the Taipei Botanical Gardens is one of best places on the island to find them. |
| 19th September 2008 Jim | Grocery shopping - From: Random Observations About Taiwan For somewhat reasonable prices on US-type groceries, don't forget Costco. You DID get a Costco card before you left, right....? |
| 17th September 2008 RandiB | - From: Random Observations About Taiwan $8 bucks for corn flakes!?!?!? |
| 17th September 2008 George M | - From: Random Observations About Taiwan Nick, it's always good to make new friends and cultivate relationships. George ... |
| 16th September 2008 hanna | cyclone - From: The Washing Machine From HELL welcome to the club!! you hav survived your first hurricane! Now you know how we feel here in good old Florida usa! Nick, I hope you will write a book, once you return back to states. Or write a script for sitcom comedy. The washing mashine from hell is worthy of Sinefeld episode!! It was better then Sinefeld episode!! We cannot wait for more advantures in foreign lands!!! Keep them coming.............. Love hanna and wojtek |
| 15th September 2008 Mickey | Re: the machine from H-E-L-L - From: The Washing Machine From HELL Hahaha! Sounds like it was quite an "adventure," and I can totally see how Kristen would be frustrated with it. |
| 14th September 2008 Janie | Funny!! - From: The Washing Machine From HELL You guys are so funny! I can just see you two mulling over that machine....probably makes Park Place machines look like a dream..hard to believe! I have every confidence that you'll both master the art of clothes washing some day soon. I particularly love the post-it notes...just another tidbit to add to this great adventure. Sounds like you're settling in though and soon this will be just every day stuff. Take care....Janie and Wilma |
| 14th September 2008 paul | - From: The Washing Machine From HELL The wonders of modern technology. Try Chinese hand laundry service vbg |
| 14th September 2008 George M | It used to be simple. - From: The Washing Machine From HELL Nick, Gone are the days of simple machines with only on/off and wash/dry switches. Most appliances made in the last 30 years (including TV remotes) were designed by engineers (mostly men) who are about as far away from the rinse cycle as you and I are from quantum mechanics. No need for the sledgehammer since the machine can't find back (at least not yet). But, you might want to find someone in the building who knows the machine well and take them out for lunch in exchange for knowledge to make it run at warp factor two. George ... |
| 14th September 2008 Mack | Where's the pull-out futon? - From: Welcome to Our New Home! Lovely loft, but where will I sleep when I take hop from Okinawa? Should I bring my ISOMAT? Mack |
| 11th September 2008 hanna | new apartment - From: Welcome to Our New Home! Hi Guys, your apartment is so cute!! love hanna |
| 11th September 2008 Sharon | - From: Welcome to Our New Home! I don't know what took longer... your flight or me trying to figure out how to access your blog!!! I finally was able to get into it today. I'm happy things are going well and I look forward to reading about all your adventures. Take care and Be Safe. |
| 10th September 2008 George M | - From: Welcome to Our New Home! Nick, Your new place looks great and I'm sure you'll enjoy it a lot. At least you now have cable ... George |
| 9th September 2008 mickey | Hooray! - From: Great news! You have a home! Can't sait to see pictures. |
| 8th September 2008 Katherine | - From: Great news! Congratulations on the new apartment, Im sure you guys will settle in quickly. I am so happy for you guys and this amazing experience. I love the pics! |

| 8th September 2008 Diane | We miss you - From: Taipei 101 and going apartment hunting Hi Nick, Hi Kristen... Wow! What an interesting looking place! I wish you good luck apartment hunting. I'm sure something will come through soon. Hang in there...we'll miss you at the meeting tomorrow evening! |
| 8th September 2008 Mickey | Hooray - From: Kristen's first day Glad to see you survived the flight, Kristen! I told you it would be a long flight. Awesome blog and I look forward to reading more on your time there. |
| 7th September 2008 George M | - From: Kristen's first day Nick, those are great photos! What I found refreshing to see in the photos (at least so far) is the lack of street garbage (empty plastic bottles, refuse, litter, etc.) that you normally find in almost any American city these days. Get some rest too and have fun. George & Marge |
| 7th September 2008 hanna | humidity - From: Kristen's first day Hi, we are glad you both got to Taipei safely. As far as humidity is concern...don't forget it's good for your skin!!!! You will stay young and beautiful..............I know ...we live in Florida............ |
| 6th September 2008 paul | - From: Kristen's first day sorry to write again. When you get older there are always blank spots between thoughts that show up as additional e-mails, vbg. The statue in the photo looks like the Chinese man of war, who is also used as a sign for business. I cant remember his name. Paul |
| 6th September 2008 paul | - From: Kristen's first day I must have hit the send button by accident. sorry about that. Glad you had a safe flight. I can't believe I use to do that trip once a month and without hard drugs!!! Yes the humidity is something you have to experience there. No one here will understand what it is like, if you try to explain it. I remember having the same feeling you mentioned on my first trip to Asia, I finally understood how a foreigner feels here. Neat pics!!! I gave Nick a web site that you can view most U.S. newspapers on and it will be like having a bit of home with you. The first step of your adventure has begun, enjoy it together. Paul and Maribelle |
| 6th September 2008 Paul | - From: Kristen's first day Glad you had a safe flight. The humidity is |
| 4th September 2008 Paul | - From: Day 2 Hi Nick, Good to hear from you. I remember those long flights, the time change and the adverse effects it has on a person for a few days. When you mentioned the feeling of it all not seeming real it really brought back memories. It is something people do not understand unless they have done it. I understand the toll it exacts on one. My longest trip was a month and I remember getting this feeling of panic that I had made a mistake. Of course it passed after a few days once I became immersed into my new environment. Then I would get occasional feelings of being homesick. You are lucky in that respect as you will have Kristen with you. Paul |
| 4th September 2008 Mar | First! - From: Arrived in Taipei!!! Nick - Wow you're finally in Taiwan - Yay! Sooo, any pics of the the out side of the hotel, perhaps? Not that I didn't get a chuckle out of the urinal pic! |
| 4th September 2008 George M. | Looks good. - From: Day 2 Nick, you're right. The room looks a lot nicer than some hotels/motels here in the states. |
