Nevil Stow

Nevil

A motorcycle trip into northern Canada and Alaska. Basically I'm hoping to acheive the two most northerly points accessible by road in both Canada and the USA in the same month. This journey will take me to Inuvik in the North West Territories via the Dempster Highway and then on to Prudhoe Bay/Deadhorse Alaska via the Dalton highway. The bike and I will travel twice out of treeline and twice into the arctic Circle!
This whole trip is also raising cash for the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta, NWT & Nunavut. My Name is Nevil Stow, I had a stroke on September 24th 2009 and want to raise awareness and funds for these guys the only way i know how.....on a motorcycle; so please bear with me as I try to blog the preparation and undertaking of this trip. Enjoy!

Well it's been a while since I wrote anything here so I thought I'd better slap some random thoughts up for the world to see. Firstly, the Inuvik and Prudhoe Bay trip proved to be worthwhile as I managed ultimately to raise about $5000 for the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Huge thanks to all who donated. Many apologies to those who were unable to track me on this journey too. The good news is that I now own a SPOT tracker and have tried it out on a couple opf smaller road trips. It works really well ...in fact my brother Andy is going to get one for his trip to Mongolia this year! Ah yes.....Mongolia. If I had the money I would join him this year but sadly this will not be the case. So..........we ... read more

Ok…so some of you thought I hadn’t made it home due to the fact that I didn’t really post it on the blog! I did make it home after a wonderful sunny ride through from Nakusp B.C. across the Rogers pass and up to Lake Louise. I got home around 7:30 in the evening after leaving Nakusp at 2pm…..that’s right I was riding sensibly that’s why it took me 51/2 hours to get home (plus a ferry ride and a bit of a wait too). I stepped straight back into work on Monday the 16th to a myriad of emails. Tuesday was my daughter’s 10th birthday, Dom (the fellow I travelled with to Nakusp) and his lovely wife Tracey swung by on Wednesday evening so that I could fit a few things to his bike (check ... read more

Friday …..my penultimate day. Well the trip is nearly over and with it comes the reality of getting myself back home and resuming a normal life again. My last stop has been in Nakusp to visit the Horizons Unlimited meeting www.horizonsunlimited.com if you’re interested in motorcycle travel. The ride here from Prince George was punctuated by a stop over just north of Falkland B.C. at a wonderful little resort on Pillar lakes. The further south I come the more “civilised” everything becomes with fast food joints, Auto dealers, recreation complexes and wineries. Driving through Vernon yesterday I was hard pushed to find someone that wasn’t retired. Most of the population here was going about their daily routine dressed in golfing shorts and tops and were living the quiet life. Coming from the wilds of the north ... read more

Hi All, Well I'm now travelling with three fellows that all met on the road. Patrick, an Irishman who is doing the Prudhoe bay to Tieraa del Fuego run on an Africa Twin; Paul is from Houston TX and is riding a KLR 650 and Dominic from Jersey on a GS1200. Basically they're on their way to Nakusp to the 9th annual meeting of the Horizons Unlimited website members so I'll tag along too! It should be a good place to swap motorcycle stories and meet new travellers too. At present I'm sat in the warm sunshine in Prince George BC after a rather lengthy day ...although we didn't ride very far. The concern of the day was Patricks rear tire (Tyre if you're English) that lost a few chunks out of it and was nursed ... read more

Missed Atlin!

Well i tried to go to Atlin but the road had just been gravelled and i was on road tires. It was like riding on Marbles so instead of risking a crash I chose to turn around and head back to Watson Lake instead. I'm a bit disappointed that I didn't get to see Atlin but there's always another time right? Watson Lake was interesting because although the forest fire was still burning they were "Piloting" us through it using a pick up truck as the pilot car for 75 kms. The area was devastated but sadly no photos as we were told there was no stopping. I'm now in Stewart BC again ....and damp...but moving on to Smithers this afternoon with a new goup of friends i met on the road at Dease Lake. Actually ... read more

Hello Folks, Well, I sit here in a dry tent after a 900 kilometre ride through the wettest storm yet. As previously described, Anchorage was wet….very wet. When I left on Thursday morning at 7am it was still wet and I found out that the storm system creating this was all over the southern part of Alaska …..almost to Whitehorse actually. I rode through this using waterproof pants that were torn to shreds by the Dempster so 20 minutes after setting out I had wet feet….for 900 kilometres. About an hour after crossing back into Canada the weather dried up a little and I booked into the Talbot Arms Motel in Destruction Bay Yukon (sounds great eh?). It’s a beautiful oasis when everything you own is drenched I can tell you! I now sit in the ... read more

Well it was 3 wet days here in Anchorage but a good rest for me, road tires back on the bike and a whole bunch of new friends in the motorcycle fraternity. If you're going to Anchorage on a motorcycle, feel safe in the knowledge you'll be taken care of. Keith from "The Motorcycle Shop" had a great statement......"Bad roads bring good people together"....I like that. So I hope to be packed and on the road by 8am tomorrow. I have a long ride to Tok Al;aska but hopefully not wet. IO doubt if i have internet coverage there so I'll try to blog on Friday from Whitehorse if I can. Sadly the North Canol Highway has eluded me once more but I will be back somedaqy to try it out. I guess I just keep ... read more

Ok folks, sop i made it to Anchorage today with the bike not getting any louder as far as the rattle is concerned. I camped at McKinley village in Denali Park last night annd was packed and on the road by 7:15. It's actually a very long tree lined drive all the way toAnchorage pretty much so I didn't really stop to photograph anything.....sorry. I have put up some photos of the campsite in Anchorage though. Purely because Anchorage Harley Davidson are a good bunch of people and offer a small campsite out the back of their shop for free as well as a bathroom and shower. Right next door is Alaska Rider Tours run by Phil and his crew who are also the best bunch of people you'd wish to meet! They're on Spenard Street ... read more

Hi Everyone, Well we made it to Prudhoe bay! it was a 238km ride north from our campground at Galbraith and wrist slittingly boring on that stretch of road. Deadhorse/Prudhoe looks like it belongs on the moon by the way and the wind blows dust devils through the area something fierce if you're on a bike. Anyway, after a $15 lunch at the Prudhoe Bay hotel we headed south and camped at Coldfoot for the night. At last we got to have a warm shower and bathrooms again! We slept like logs too after the mammoth day (630kms of dirt mixed with pavement) and headed south toward Fairbanks. My concern was the ever growing "ticking" noise that is now coming from the left hand cylinder of my bike (I think it's excessive endplay in the inlet ... read more

Friday the 30th of July. Hello Wonderful People, Well today was a long one for us and I now sit in my tent at 10:30 at night typing today’s news onto a word sheet so I can copy & paste tomorrow in Prudhoe Bay ,……actually Deadhorse Alaska ……the Oil companies won’t allow us to get to Prudhoe unless we book 24 hours in advance and pay $45 each to be escorted the last 4 miles! Yup…..even 9/11 affected us here too! Anyway, we rode through the arctic circle again today and that’s become quite evident in the fact that the sun is still well above the horizon at 10:30pm. In fact I don’t think it’s going to bed tonight. En-route today we took a small detour to a town(?) called Wiseman. Try googling it if you ... read more
