This Trip will see me re visit Italy. Its almost been a year to date since i returned home, and im off agian! This time the plan is for 6 months.
It really wasn’t my fault. The opportunity arised to go on a family holiday to Italy. Though i didn’t see the point in going all the way to Europe and then returning home. And after last years holiday im dying to see more of the Middle East!

So Italy will be done at a slower pace, as im playing chaperon to my Grandmother, Mother and Aunty! After that I think I might need I holiday? So i plan to travel around the middle east before setting up base and learning Arabic in Beirut! ‘Plan’ being the operative word!

Well this was my final week in Lebanon and it was certainly busy ! Returning back from Switzerland, Lebanon no longer seemed as cold! It was amazing stepping off the MEA flight from Geneva and smelling the ocean spray from the Mediterranean! So we hired a car again, and made our way up to the Cedars in north Lebanon. The traffic on the way up to the ski slopes was a nightmare as there was only a narrow road for cars to come both ways. It was like everyone was freaking out because they hadn't seen snow before and didnt know how to drive! Once we arrived to the Cedars pists, there where only two runs open, which was unfortunate, but okay, as we had our skiing fix from Switzerland. We then explored the local shops ... read more

As i said, it wasnt my idea taking a side trip to Ski in Switzerland! Minus temperatures and high altitudes isnt really my idea of a holiday! But Skiing in Switzerland was amazing! It was my first time skiing in Europe and what a massive difference from the 'slopes' in Australia! Zermatt was the village we stayed which is situated at an altitude of 1,620m and is completely surrounded by the high mountains of the Pennine Alps ! To prevent air pollution which could obscure the town's view of its prized Matterhorn, the entire town is a car free! All vehicles in Zermatt are battery driven and completely silent, or loud and jingling with horse and carriage! We left Beirut at 7.20am, admittedly we... well... I was slightly nervous, considering a plane was freakishly struck by ... read more

Well my brother has arrived in Beirut, and we've been keeping more then busy! During his first week in Lebanon, we spent the majority of our time within Beirut city. The weather was unusually glorious, warm and sunny, didn't rain once!! The first week Daniel arrived, arrived i took him around Beirut. We walked from Mar Miekl to Hamrah, which , as Daniel noted, is the 'real' Beirut where everyone mix's , Lebanese Muslims and Christians, unlike my area which is all christian lebanese, french and expatriate! Tuesday was spent in Ashrafieh, ABC mall, where he couldn't believe how affluent the Lebanese the area are!! (and the price of coffee) It really is amazing! Wednesday it rained terribly, we went to visit the Museum! Daniel enjoyed it, but there was a power out and he was ... read more

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year !!!!! My Arabic lessons finished with a dismal exam on the final day of class, there were only 3 of us who actually sat the exam as the other students were already returning home for the festive season! This exam included no listening or oral examination, written only!! was crap! i have a hard enough time trying to string a sentence together, yet alone writing a response in arabic ! PFT! So i left Beirut two days before Christmas to the north of Lebanon, to Zozos winter house in Daraya, a small village surrounded by olive trees next to Zgharta. It was great to get out of Beirut. All the Lebanese living abroad come home for the holiday season, so you can just imagine what type of chaos was on ... read more

December 14th 2009

I have to start with this article i read from October/November issue of Time Out Beirut... In each edition theres a "Tribe of Beirut" section, commenting on the social groups within Beirut, this one targets "Westerns in Beirut" Some background info is needed, it talks about "Fiskeans"... Robert fisk is an English Journalist who has been living in Beirut for years, he was one of the few journalists who lived in west Beirut during the civil war, i read his book "Pity the Nation" and skimmed his "Great war for civilizations" So the article reads.... Tribe of Beirut - Fiskeans! - Westerns looking for a Middle Eastern Adventure, otherwise known as "fiskeans', members of this tribe have abandoned their home country to experience life 'behind borderlines', without realising theres a Dunkin Donuts in Lebanon. Desperate for ... read more

Hi, Kefec, cava was one of the first things i heard when i came off the plane from Ciaro... its a great reflection of what life in Beirut is like, a major mixture of colonial french , with a western influence ontop of a strong middle eastern culture. Ive been in Lebanon for over two weeks now, no i wasn't kidnapped by Hezbollah, ive just been... 'busy'... I still cant believe im in the middle east, for the first week here that's all i was saying, "WHOA..." even though ive been here before, its like i am now seeing Lebanon in a new light! I can now compare it with the rest of the middle east and definitely say that Beirut is an extremely cosmopolitan city in comparison to its neighbours. Lebanon in general has a ... read more

Iskandariyya is how you pronounce it in Arabic!! Has a nice ring!! The bus ride here was un eventful. I was conned into drinking what i thought was complementary tea offered by the bus personal. Before i was about to get off i was informed i had to pay the equivalent of the 3 hour bus trip for tea and some packaged croissants ! So much for hospitality! (what am i complaining about it was only 4 dollars!) It took me a while to find suitable accommodation in Alexandria (cheap and clean, ha, wishful thinking) I didnt have anything pre booked, so all the 'single' beds were taken. Im not really sure if this was the case or they simply want you to take a double room, but i finally found a wonderful, cheap place in ... read more

CAIRO IS NUTS! Was my first thought when i stepped out from my hostel the next morning! I hadn't even crossed the road yet, wasn't even 10m from the doorstep of my hostel when i was approached by multiple Ali Baba's (ill refer to the touts and annoyee's with the name Ali Baba. Throughout my travels within the middle east, everyone i spoke to who i mentioned i was going to Cairo warned me to be careful of Ali Baba! "Ze people in Cairo are ALL Ali Baba") Sorry for the generalisation, im sure it isnt a representation of greater Cairo and is probably restricted to the tourists areas, but i was just starting my day and was swarmed with "MY FRIEND! HELLO! MISTER! YOU LOST? YOU WANT SOUVENIR? FRIEND! COME!" i kept walking and in ... read more

I got a lift out of Wadi Rum camp site by the lovely German couple who were been driving around Jordan with a hire car, they where also headed to Aqaba and offered to give me a lift into town! (YES FREE RIDE!) Once in Aqaba i must admit i became a quasi backpacker, and checked into a "mid range hotel" that had the luxury of a double bed, air-conditioning, breakfast, my own toilet and wait for it... a TELEVISION! YES it even had a satellite movie channel and was picking up Israeli stations from the other side of the strait! After all the walking around Petra and the desert i was in much need of rest and relaxation. Comparing the beaches in Australia to the 'beach' in Aqaba, infact the whole strait actually, really didn't ... read more

I dont know whats happening to me! Im sleeping in desert camps? not showering for 2 days. No towel? Thats okay, ill use my dirty t shirts. Is this shirt dirty? Wait let me do a smell test... MMM... still good! I dont even care if i dont bursh my teeth, gum will do! This is the holiday me. I turn into some backpacker bogan... well... quasi backpacker, the real deal would have been to sleep under the stars and not in a tent, thats a bit too native for me though considering the temperature plumates in the evening. I left Petra on the 6am Bus for Wadi Rum and yes there was the usual hassles of buses VS taxi, in the mornings im slightly more vulnerable as i really haven't gathered my momentum for haggelling, ... read more
