Saturday July 22, 2012 The Colloseum, Ancient Rome and more great coffee…. We have easily mastered the subway system, which is cheap, quick and very easy to figure out. So, we hopped onto the A line train to Termini—the main train station. We wanted to know how long it would take us to get there because we were leaving tomorrow to catch the train to Venice it is also located just a few blocks from Ancient Rome another of the places we wanted to see. It was a pretty quick trip even if the crowds were somewhat lighter than they would be normally because it was a Saturday. In fact, we were surprised how much lighter the crowds actually were. When we asked about this we were told that people had largely left the city for ... read more

Friday July 20, 2012. Vatican City We were up early and walked along Via Cola di Rienzo a main through fare, which leads to Vatican City. This street is just at the end of the block where our Bed and Breakfast is. I have to say in a place like Rome where you can walk absolutely everywhere choosing a place to stay in the downtown area is really critical. Unlike other large cities Rome is VERY walkable and if you don’t feel like walking the subway system is a piece of cake to learn to use. As we walked along we stopped at an amazing shop. It was kind of a deli/coffee bar/bakery place and of course the first thing that drew us in was the small crowd gathered around the barista… the protocol, we quickly ... read more

Holy jet lag and bad spelling...first of all it was the PANTHEON that we saw and the Colloseum that we did not yet see. WOW! I even said to John...'this doesn't look right and I am too tired to know what do you think?' clearly neither of us was thinking. ha. We had a great sleep. John is still sawing logs. Today we go to the Vatican. I have really looked forward to this day. So I will add some photos to this and we will be writing more later in the day...... read more

Well...hello! We arrived in Rome about 9:15 this a.m. local time. We quickly got herded through the tunnel that is called customs...it was nothing, they didn't even stamp my passport! That kind of bugged me because I like those stamps...it is like proof of purchase. Anyway, the Rome airport is kind of a dump and nothing that reflects this incredible, amazing and historic place. We met a couple of young Aussies who were finishing up a 6 week tour of Europe and they raved about the Amalfi Coast and gave us some great tips. They were on the bus with us into the downtown. The sitbus cost us 16 euros (which is super cheap and super easy.) to get us to our Bed and Breakfast which is in the historic part of Rome and within an ... read more

Last night we went over to Judy and Dave Rannards for a lovely dinner, after which they shared their slides of Italy with us! It was grand. I am running to the currency exchange today and a few other minor errands all in preparation. I am currently stuck on hold with Air Canada...we added a few more names to our email list for the blog. Please feel free to write us comments and or ask questions. This will be the last time I write until we are in Rome. It will be good to put on my gypsy hat once again. I am learning to pack light and I think this time I have possibly mastered it...time will tell. All for now! nan... read more

In Rome we are starting with a private walking tour the afternoon we land. We have found that this is a great way to beat off jet lag and just hit the ground running. The second day we have a day in Vatican City with a private tour of the botanical gardens included. Not sure about day 3 but I am hoping we will have ideas once we are in Rome...I am sure we will do as the Romans...haha... We have nothing firm booked for Venice yet but the gondola ride on the grand canal is a definite. In Florence we have a Tuscan Wine tour/lesson booked, that will be hard and I am sure we won't enjoy it....In Naples we plan to eat pizza and tour about. Then we are staying a week on the ... read more
