You think I’m beautiful, and sometimes I feel it too. We’re going to Czech Republic soon, staying with the Ls in Olomouc, and then on to Praha for the rest of the week. At the end of April we’re going to Berlin, even though neither of us have much money, where we will have many more adventures. I think you’re serious, and sometimes I can see it in your eyes too. In other news: I met your mum and she loved me and I was happy. J visited and you hit it off. He reminded you of your sister. Something [View Full Entry]

The Other

Europe » Denmark » Region Hovedstaden » Copenhagen
My Other is hunkered down for New England snowstorms. Huddled in protective layers. Hibernating fugitive. Fearfully guarding hopeful warmer memories, ‘cause I’ve never been a fool when my heart was on the line. Winter is different here. There is nothing to be overcome. And February has been dramatically wonderful. I think the “other” business stems from an overload of EU theory. I’m self-medicating; applying political hypotheses to a quasi crisis of self. Valentine’s was awesome (i.e. breakfast in bed and roses). We went out for dinner and [View Full Entry]

Ns and I went to Christiania, the “free” city within Copenhagen, today. C and I were supposed to go, but she wasn’t feeling well. Lots of artwork on buildings, drugs sold out in the open, free spirits who took over abandoned army barracks, tax-free love dressed in bright colors. Had a great time exploring. After stopping by the Opera House, we ended up at the Black Diamond (ultra sleek part of the Royal Library). Hot chocolate and serious discussions. Introduced Ns to M and F, who proceeded to interrogate me about all the details. I also got a basket for my [View Full Entry]

It’s Thursday and I’m happy. It’s Thursday and I’m wondering if I’ll ever want to go home. It’s Thursday, and I’m lost in fairy tales. I spent today hunting down books with Ns. I spent yesterday wandering through the national art museum, eating falafel, and wearing my hood up. Also bought a ticket to Stockholm with C. It’s Thursday and I’m happy. I spent last night wandering the city into the wee hours of the morning. A man with beautiful words. I haven’t even been here 2 weeks. I’m not sure if that makes this crazy [View Full Entry]

Went on a tour of the Carlsberg brewery today (on a Sunday afternoon of course). Carlsberg is THE beer here. Ns taught me how to count to 10, here goes… 1: en (sounds like: een) 2: to (two) 3: tre (sort of like tray, but not quite…err…) 4: fire (feah) 5: fem (fip) 6: seks (six) 7: syb (sou as in soup) 8: otte (oahdah) 9: ni (nee) 10: ti (tee) And then after I try to imitate, “rigtig godt”, which means very good. I can remember 4 and 8 pretty well because they sound like a Boston accent to me. [View Full Entry]

Another marvelous night in Copenhagen. Went to check out the political science “Friday Bar”; each department has its own bar on Fridays, which is a novel and amusing concept to the American students, given how much universities at home try to keep us from drinking. It ended up being closed, so I called Ns, who came and met us, and we took a cab back to his friends’ place. Got a look at how “real” Danes enjoy a Friday night. You’re standard “pre-gaming” in someone’s apartment (complete with The Killers playing in the background), and th [View Full Entry]

Circle dance was decent after all; more so the food and drink than the orientation program. Maybe because eating is so primal, universal…? A veritable UN of diners. Political scientists…and a smaller minority of theorists. Philosophers. Fools. Anyway, The Happy Pig (translation to come) is now a new favorite spot…as is Ns’ company. Hopefully the pinky-swear to teach me Danish carries as much weight here as it does in the States (THE States?). Transgression of the time-honored schoolyard tradition: unspeakable crime. Not sure if I should be writing now&hel [View Full Entry]

Surprised myself by not crying at the airport...came close though. Surprised at how fluidly I moved around in the terminal's confines too. A little strange to blend in. Used to sticking out? Both relieving and unnerving at the same time. Simultaneously monogamous. Simul. Simul atque. The Latin comes and goes, usually in phrases and patterns. Kept trying to sift out Icelanders…tall, blonde islands. One sized me up en route to her gate. On the lookout for lonely blonde travelers; other islands. I keep oscillating between sturdy confidence and a feeling of obvious ineptitude. [View Full Entry]

The story of Central Massachusetts: Field of Flooded Dreams.
I've put a lot of thought into whether I wanted to keep up a blog while away...It was a trickier decision than I expected. There's the whole question of audiences (i.e. Would it be for mostly for myself? Friends? Family?) and how I relate to each. I've decided for the moment to keep it as a kind of personal log, see how it develops, and then possibly release it. Totally ironic. I love it. That said, let's set the stage in black and white: 20 yr. old college student: blonde hair, fondness for vintage belt buckles, inept in some areas, yet [View Full Entry]
