We're off on a year's traveling round the world. Leaving November 14th 2007. London>Fiji>NZ>OZ>Singapore>Malaysia>Sumatra>Java>Bali>Vietnam>Cambodia>Thailand>Hong Kong Phooey>London.

Looking forward to spending Christmas and new year Island hopping around Fiji and then 3 months driving round NZ in a camper van followed by 5 months of the same in Oz. Then we'll do some time traveling around South East Asia, hopefully to see Orangutans in Medan, Sumatra and Borobudur in Java before some R&R in Bali. Then some touristy stuff in Vietnam including a train journey between Saigon (HCMC) and Hanoi and then the Temples/Wats of Cambodia.

Hopefully back in Dear old Blighty sometime November 2008 unless something else comes up along the way

Hello and welcome to what should be our final blog, covering Southern Thailand and Hong Kong. After our 'Tour of Duty' in Viet Nam and Cambodia we decided to get a few weeks R&R in on the beaches of Southern Thailand. Our first stop was the island of Koh Lanta which unfortunately turned out to be closed. The dry season officially starts on the 1st November and as we arrived a few days before this date things weren't quite up and running yet. Still, we had a good time just relaxing by the pool, inbetween some days of torrential rain. After Lanta we caught the ferry to Koh Phi Phi. The smaller of the two islands, Phi Phi Ley, was used as the setting for the film version of 'The Beach' and the scenery on both ... read more

Sui S'dey from Cambodia and welcome to the second part of our Viet Nam/Cambodia update. "Same-Same, but different" is how the local saying goes and it describes the country very well. It's quite similar to other SE Asian countries in terms of scenery but it has 2 features in particular which make it unique, the first of these is The Temples of Angkor. We flew from Ha Noi to Siem Reap and spent 4 days exploring the walled cities, palaces and temples of the Angkor Area which in total number over 100. These were built by the Angkor dynasty between the 8th and 12th centuries to ever grander designs and are considered to be the heart of the Khmer cultural identity. Some of the sites are relatively small and can be walked around in a few ... read more

Xin Chao from Viet Nam and welcome to the first of a 2 part special covering Viet Nam and Cambodia. We landed in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) and had a couple of hours to wait for Tina's father, Brian, to arrive. He joined us for Viet Nam and Cambodia and Tina was really pleased to see him as he'd brought supplies of chocolate from the UK!! The centre of HCMC is still referred to as Sai Gon and our hotel was right in the heart of the downtown area of District 1. Sai Gon is a wild place throbbing with people and countless motor scooters. Walking down the streets is what I'd imagine living in a bee-hive would be like, with a sea of humanity swarming around you all going about their daily business, be ... read more

Hi all, we hope you're all well. There's quite a lot to get through so we'll crack on. From Singapore we took a short flight to the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur. The less said about KL the better. From there, another short flight to Medan on the northern edge of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. On arrival we caught a jeep for the 3 hour drive north to Bukit Lawang in the heart of the jungle. This area is very close to Bandah Aceh which bore the brunt of the 2004 Tsunami so the roads in places were impassable to cars hence the need for a jeep. The area and people seem to have recovered quite well from the disaster but with such a low basic standard of living it was hard to say for ... read more

Hi all, just a quick update covering our last couple of weeks in Singapore and S.E. Malaysia. After a pleasant 8 hour flight from Brisbane we landed in steamy, sultry Singapore - 'The City State' just 36 miles north of the equator. Tina's never been before but my last visit 15 years ago was as a penniless backpacker and my memories were not that fond. Fortunately, this time around was much better. Singapore is a striking blend of the ultra-modern opulence of the downtown business district, with its skyscrapers and the plush top-end shopping malls of Orchard Road, contrasted with the shabby racousness of areas like Little India and Chinatown with their street-front eateries, chinese baroque architecture and burning offerings and incense sticks on every street corner. Staying in a Chinese enclave to the east of ... read more

G'day all and welcome to our final blog from wonderful Australia. In our last update we were half way through our time at Mission Beach and it's fair to say that the last 2 weeks went pretty much the same as the first 2, very relaxing. So relaxing in fact that over a few drinks on our last Friday night in town we decided we needed an adrenaline shot before hitting the road again. Tina opted for another sky-dive whilst I chose white water rafting. So, in a slightly hung-over state the next morning Tina signed up for a 14,000 feet (4,300m) skydive over Mission Beach. Jumping from 2,000 feet higher than our jumps in NZ would give her an extra 15 seconds free-fall and mean that this time she would be jumping from above the ... read more

Hi all and hearty greetings from Mission Beach. Another quick update of our exploits over the last few weeks. Arriving in Tropical North Queensland after weeks driving through the outback we noticed an obvious change in the scenery. As we headed north up the coast from Townsville we were driving through fields of waving sugar Cane, banana plantations and fields of pineapples. On the inland side jagged mountain ranges were clad with misty rainforests which in some places tumbled almost to the sea. Very similar to Fiji which is no surprise as we are on the same latitude. The weather too was hot and steamy even though this is the start of the 'dry' season. It all made a pleasant change. Cairns was to be our base for a couple of weeks. Cairns is a fairly ... read more

Greetings to you all from a warm & steamy Tropical Queensland. As you'll probably gathered from the fact that we're now in Queensland we've done a bit of travelling since our last blog. Our 8 days in Broome were wonderful; clear skies, 33 degrees every day and nothing better to do than lie on Cable Beach soaking up the sun and contemplating when the waves would be at their best for a bit of boarding. When our 8 days were up we decided that we could do with more of the same but as accommodation in Broome was scarce we decided to head further down the W.A. Coast to the Pilbara region. 80 Mile Beach is 360km south of Broome and 240km north of the other nearest town, Port Hedland. Absolutely in the middle of nowhere ... read more

Well, we left Melbourne suitably refreshed and ready to hit the road again. Our first destination was the Great Ocean Road. It was built by servicemen returning from the first world war and the aim was for it to rival Northern California's Ocean highway (Route 5 ?) and in my opinion it certainly does. Great craggy, wild coastlines and limestone columns jutting into the turbulent ocean below. The most famous limestone columns are 'The Twelve Apostles' and also 'London Bridge', which has indeed fallen down. Our hopes that we could enjoy a warm autumn in southern Australia looked good at this point but were soon to prove chuckle-headed. A cold front swept in from the Antarctic and dumped 20cm (8 inches) of snow on Canberra and although we were a bit further south we were left ... read more

Hello & greetings to everyone Australia............. and for various reasons the last 3 weeks have been the toughest so far, but here's a brief(ish) account of our latest travels. We landed in Sydney to pleasant warm sunshine and headed to our hotel in the heart of the CBD, just around the corner from Circular Quay, The Rocks, Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. Sydney really is a beautiful city and the CBD is a very vibrant commercial centre, very reminiscent of the City of London in many ways. Grand imposing buildings, skyscrapers and bustling crowds and, for Tina, plenty of shops. We spent some very pleasant evenings in Circular Quay and The Rocks, taking in the cityscape as it lit up and was reflected in the glistening harbour waters. Tina found it very "surreal to ... read more
