Middle East » Turkey September 24th 2012

24 September 2012 All fifteen vans followed Kevin to the ferry at Eceabat and crossed the Dardanelles to Canakkle and thereby entered Asia. We drove 25k and had a guided tour of the nine different cities which were built at Troy between 3000BC and 500AD. I thought it was more of an archaeological investigation than a particularly impressive site. We had most fun climbing into the wooden horse that was sited at the entrance to the grounds. We continued another 200k, partly on winding country roads to the market own of Bergama where we had an exciting drive through the centre on its busy narrow cobbled streets to reach our campsite.... read more

Middle East » Turkey September 23rd 2012

23 September 2012 Today we had the first of several guided tours we are doing on this trip. We visited the Gallipoli battlefields. In the First World War the Allies attempted to provide an ice free relief route to Russia by opening up the Dardanelles straight and capturing Constantinople. In early 1915 a strong navel fleet attempted to force through the Dardanelles but they were stopped by Turkish cannons and mines and three battleships were sunk. On April 25 1915 a combined British, Australian, New Zealand and Indian Force landed on Gallipoli at several points, most famously Anzac Cove, hoping to capture the peninsular. They met stiff Turkish defence led by Mustafa Kemel (who later founded modern Turkey) resulting in an attritional conflict with little ground being gained. Eventually in January 1916 the Allied troops withdrew ... read more

Middle East » Turkey September 22nd 2012

22 September 2012 Entering Turkey today was fairly complicated. First we had to buy a £10 visa and have the appropriate stamp stuck into our passports. Then the passports were inspected and stamped. Then the van’s registration document and green card were inspected and my passport stamped to show I have a temporary import licence for the vehicle. Then both our passports were inspected by customs. After which we were waved through at the final checkpoint. On fairly rough roads we went to the town of Gelibolu. Whilst driving around looking for a museum we wanted to see (never found it) we parked in a shady place but were soon moved on by an armed soldier as we had chosen to stop outside a grand looking military installation! We stayed the night on the Gallipoli peninsular ... read more

Europe » Greece September 21st 2012

21 September 2012 A respite from the travelling and sightseeing. We were late up, had a pre breakfast swim and then walked into town, did some shopping including having beef kebabs made for us by a german speaking Greek butcher and back along the promenade and beach. The afternoon was whiled away with some chores, another swim and a briefing from Kevin on what to expect when we entered Turkey. A pleasant day was concluded by an impromptu barbeque whilst watching the sunset over the islands out to sea.... read more

Europe » Greece September 20th 2012

20 September 2012 We continued eastwards and arrived at lunchtime at the coastal town of Kavala but couldn’t visit or take pictures of its castle and ancient 3 storey aqueduct because of heavy traffic and lack of obvious parking. However we found a pleasant place to stop and eat by a small beach. The day’s journey ended at a delightfully situated beach side camp site on the outskirts of Alexandroupoli, 25 miles from the Turkish border. We had our first dip in the sea of this trip and this was followed by an excellent meal with six of our fellow travellers at an open air restaurant facing onto the beach.... read more

Europe » Greece September 19th 2012

19 September 2012 We were parked next to a noisy ventilation shaft on the camping deck and so had a rather disturbed night. The boat arrived at 08.30 at Igoumenista and after some rather intricate reversing with many shouted instructions from the crew, all 16 vans safely disembarked to begin the two day 500 mile journey eastwards across the whole of Northern Greece to the Turkish border. During the day’s driving we visited the lakeside town of Ioannina and depite some satnav mishaps managed to find a parking spot by the castle which we walked around and visited an unused mosque in the citadel which has been created into the municipal museum. We stopped the night at the village of Makrygialos just south of Thessalonnika.... read more

18 September 2012 We left early to drive the 200k to Ancona where we caught the 14.00 overnight ferry down the Adriatic Sea to Igoumenista in Greece. We will be sleeping in the van on the vehicle deck during the crossing. There were a lot of young people on board who settled down for a long drinking session on the open upper decks. In the evening a group dinner in the ship’s restaurant helped pass the journey.... read more

17 September 2012 We renewed our acquaintance with the delightful university city of Bologna, wandering around some of its miles and miles of wonderful porticoed pavements and visiting a few of the buildings we didn’t have chance to see last year. Some shopping for cheese, fruit and vegetables in the food market was followed by a long Italian lunch in one of the back street restaurants. The campsite is next to Bologna’s show ground and in the evening we wondered round a combined open air exhibition and fair that was taking place. The event included a large selection of open air restaurants all of which were very busy with the crowds enjoying the warm evening.... read more

16 September 2012 There was a delay to some of the vans leaving because a flat tyre needed changing. However this was soon sorted and they were off. We seem to be getting a bit of a reputation as tail end Charlies and were last away. We were passing from Switzerland into Italy and this necessitates going through or over the Alps. Previously on this route we have used the St Gotthard tunnel, but as the weather was fine and we had plenty of time we went over the St Gotthard pass at 2106m. This turned out to be an excellent and quite wide road and gave our new clutch no trouble at all. Our stop tonight was at Camping Citta at Bologne which coincidentally we had visited last year on our way back from Sardinia. ... read more

Europe » Switzerland September 15th 2012

15 September 2012 We had a walk over the back of the cliffs behind the campsite and the path took us down to Dahn. As seems to be often the case, we were last away and we drove to Karlsruhe to do some shopping. Lunch was a bratwurst sausage from a stall outside the supermarket. Then it was 300k south into Switzerland to another attractive campsite, this time at the village of Buochs on the shore of Lake Lucern. Before our dinner we strolled into the village and had a look at the lake.... read more
