Mission to the Philippines for Lindy

Mission4Lindy

This blog is dedicated to fulfilling a dream for my dad, Lindy Walker, lost to brain cancer on October 22, 2010. My dad cared greatly about seeing a Christ-centered church established in the Philippines and this work is being led by his friend Missionary Pastor Ely Dacuyan.

On April 17, 2011 dad's pastor Jerald Bishop,, my brother Bob, my daughter Lesley, Lenny Willan - my best friend since high school, and I will be departing for Castillejos, Philippines for the dedication of the new building that my dad through his giving and through the memorial contributions given when he died helped to build.

This is Lesley posting our next update. Honestly, I don't know where to start; there's so much to share in the few days we've been here. Pastor Ely keeps us busy which we like. Thursday, we visited a VBS at one of the satellite churches Brother Richard pastors. Lots of kids from the area attended. One of my favorite parts was listening to their songs. The song I can't wait to teach my kids is "Do you know about Jesus" and it's sung to the tune of "Take me out to the ballgame." I have a video of it that I will try to post, but it might be too large. I was asked to teach grades 4-6 which I thought meant helping one of the teachers. However, Brother Orlando took me up in front of ... read more

Tens of thousands of people travel to the town of Castillejos during Holy Week to witness live displays of stages of Christ's journey to the cross. Along with the organized displays by the local Catholic church, men march through the streets beating themselves with whips of sticks. The number of sticks they use designate the number of years they have been participating in the self-mutilation. About 15 of us from Solid Rock Baptist Church, the church that my dad helped get built, started out from the church and walked to the center of town passing out pamphlets to the onlookers about how Christ's blood was all sufficient. We walked several miles in great heat and all of us got our share of blood splattered on us, but by the end of the day, a thousand people ... read more

It will take much time to digest what transpired today...three hour trek in a WW2 transport vehicle built for perhaps 10 men in which we had approximately 31 people plus food and medicine for 75 families. We forded rivers and climbed hills crammed together in the most uncomfortable setting imaginable as we traveled to the tribal village of Nacolcol. However, the team came out of the experience in complete awe with what we saw, the interaction with the tribal people, seeing a civilization that is living the same way today as they did 200 to 300 years ago; no electricity, no modern convenience, medical assistance. I will have each person write more later, but for now I am posting one video. Dave... read more

The trip was tough but from the moment we landed it has been incredible. We attended a funeral last night that Pastor Bishop was asked to preach. The father of Pastor Ely's wife's sister-in-law was killed in a motorcycle accident and we were all asked to attend. The tradition is quite different as the deceased is laid in a casket inside the home and friends and family spend days and nights around the bereaved. playing cards, eating, and having a generally good time. Ladies from Pastor Ely's church sang a Tagalog song which was incredibly beautiful even though we did not understand a word. Pastor Ely asked Pastor Jerald to present the Gospel to about 50 people who had never heard the Gospel presented. I watched as he explained how the body may be laying dead, ... read more

We took off at midnight Saturday night and landed at 4am Monday morning. So, what happened to Sunday? Here's a gift idea for someone you don't like - make them fly non-stop from Atlanta to Seoul in coach in a seat with a monitor that doesn't work and all those around you are watching new release movies, listening to music, playing games, etc. My dad would get a laugh out of that and I can hear him say "That just makes you tougher and better" and then he'd laugh again. As a first-timer to Asia, this time difference thing is a real kick, knowing that it is 4 in the afternoon at home. It will be interesting to see how we all adjust to the time change. Lenny is used to his since he travels to ... read more

Although quite hectic, we made it through check-in with only having to pay a $50 surcharge. Surprisingly it had nothing to do with the sound equipment; my brother's three pairs of underwear weighed 30lbs by themselves. Actually, it was the peanut butter and crackers along with some other last minute items..... I was just called to the counter! Now what?! Hmm....400 people on this plane and my seat is the only one without a working television. Let the fun begin....... read more

I drove to Atlanta to get Lenny this morning. He flew from Indy and his baggage is already on the way to Manilla. The team met at Bob's house to prep the sound equipment and personal baggage to see if we are going to be able to make it through the weight limits. We leave for the airport at 8:30pm. Pray that all goes smoothly. Dave... read more

On Monday, Pastor Jerald, Bob and I went to the Travel Clinic located within the Tender Care Clinic in Greensboro for our final round of shots. Health Education Director Pam Luke and another member of the clinic, Brenda Oulsnam, were wonderful in providing us detailed information on what we needed to protect us from the diseases we will be facing on the island of Luzon; most notably, Japanese encephalitis, malaria, and typhoid, along with a number of lesser water and mosquito-borne illnesses. The other members of the team, Lesley and Lenny received their inoculations in their hometowns. With the supplies Bob and I bought at Bass Pro and what Lesley and I bought today, I think we are ready. The biggest challenge has been to figure out how to get the sound equipment we purchased for ... read more
