After breakfast I head to the bus stop to catch my ride to Weizern, which is where I will pick up the train to Munich. The entire journey to Munich is just over 2 hours, and from there another hour and a half to Salzburg. In Munich at the main station I spot a Starbucks. (Note to Jeff - there are Starbucks in Germany). I make my way to the next train, which is only a few tracks away, board and find my reserved seat. This is a nonstop to Salzburg. We depart Munich on time at 11:26. Around noon, I head to the dining car for lunch. I choose pasta - not much on the menu for sure. It was OK - nothing to write home about, and definitely took care of stifling the hunger ... read more

I catch the bus, which will drop me at Echeisbruke again, where I will have a 1 hour wait on the connecting bus to Fussen. I dig out my "other" gloves, because I know that with the darkness that is falling, and the temperature already dropping, it will be a cold wait. As we make our way, I see Wies Church on a small hill - so, I didn't get to go inside, but I did at least see the outside of it - as tired as I am, I am satisfied with that. We arrive at the bus stop a few minutes before 5:00. My next bus is scheduled to leave at 6:05. There is one gentleman who also gets off at this stop, and he proceeds to pull out what appears to be dinner ... read more

It's hard to believe that it is only a little after 2:00 and I have seen so much. I'm making the 20 minute bus ride to Oberammergau, but quite frankly when we passed through here this morning, didn't seem like much to me. But, having seen two of the 4 sites that were on my list, Oberammergau and Wies Church are the next in priority. Oberammergau's claim to fame is the Passion Play, held each 10 years and performed by citizens of the community. In addition, wood carvings and frescos on buildings are a special trade of this region. The driver asked if I wanted off at the bahnhof (trainstation) or town. I told him wherever the shops were. I figured I could at least stroll through the shops and have some lunch to pass the ... read more

The bus ride from Ettal to Linderhof is less than 20 minutes, if you get a direct bus, which I was fortunate to catch. Linderhof is not just the name of another one of King Ludwig's Palaces, but is also the name of the small community where the Palace is situated. As we roll past the snowcovered farms, I see deer tracks, scattered houses and bus shelters where the school children can try to get protection from the biting cold. The day is very sunny, but the wind is brisk and the air cold. I think this is the coldest day yet. Still not terribly uncomfortable, but I wouldn't want to be out in this for any extended period of time. We pass through the village of Zieglerhof, and I wonder if any of my German ... read more

My day started OK, but very groggy as I did not sleep well - why can't I have hot flashes when I'm outside in the freezing cold?. A shower helped knock out the cobwebs. Things started going a little more smoothly, until I began to dry my hair. Evidently, the power socket in the bathroom does not like my dryer, and I blew the circuit. Great. It is still pitch dark at 6:30 in the morning, but I feel my way to the phone and call to the front desk. The only people in are the kitchen staff, and someone tells me they will be up to my room to check it out. Guess they didn't believe I was standing in the dark with wet hair. A few minutes later, I answer the knock on the ... read more

So having arrived at my hotel just before 6:00, I give Jeff a quick call, and learn that my daughter Shauna needs me to call her. Gone 2 days and daughter is having a "mom's away - I gotta talk now" attack. I talked to Shauna, and after learning she is not engaged nor dying, but just needed an emotional pep talk after getting her feelings hurt, was feeling the pangs of hunger since the potato soup had long since worn off. Since dinner at the hotel restaurant is included in my rate, and frankly I had walked enough for the day, Tonight's menu specialty that peaks my interest is Schweinsoxe, or in English, "Crunchy Pig Knuckle". OK, I could have taken the easy route and gone with the salmon, but I convince myself that this ... read more

On the way down the hill, I sat next to a lady from San Francisco and her daughter, who was attending college in London. They were disappointed that the weather was not colder and that there was not more snow. Hmmm. I was well satisfied with both, the temperature was low enough for me, and the snow on the ground was a good 4 to 5 inches deep. At any rate, we reach the bottom of the hill and I make my way to the ticket office. It is now 3:00, and the last tour in Hohenschwangau is at 3:50. I know learn that the carriage goes only to Neuschwanstein (where was this ticket agent when I bought the tickets the first time?). So, I begin my climb up this mountain, first a pathway, then steps ... read more

Let me just say - Cuddle Duds are one of the best inventions to date. Worth every penny I paid for them - actually they were not so expensive, but I would have paid twice their value for sure. The morning was overcast and quite windy on that hill, and I was so happy for the extra layers. There was no indoor area to wait other than a very small souvenier shop that maybe 4 people could squeeze into. I went in for a few minutes, bought a booklet and magnets and then had to make my way back out so others could come in and do the same. I did duck into the ladies room for a few minutes, thinking that would be a great place for protection from the elements, not t mention nature ... read more

December 12th 2006

After a good night's rest, I was down in the breakfast room by 8:30, and on the public bus for the 3 mile journey to Schwangau, to visit 2 of the castles of "Mad" King Ludwig. Actually, I really don't think he was "mad", I think that he just didn't want to bother with the pomp and circumstance of his birth. He was an art and music lover, and loved talking with the common people, but didn't like mingling with the high society and government or the constant hypocrosy that politics brings - so he avoided all. He did like his castles though....he was more of a recluse person than a madman I think - he just liked to have a lot of different "big, fancy houses" to hide away in than the average person. So, ... read more

Out I go in search of the spot that I have been watching for over a year. The Fussen Homepage has a webcam, which has an image burned in my brain as I have looked at this website almost daily for the last year. So, I know it is located on the Reichenstrasse, and I have a map, so I am optimistic that I will find this familiar site. But, before that a quick stop in the Tourist office is needed to inquire on a tour for Wednesday outside of the Fussen area. No luck on the tour - it is only available for groups. But, I can take the public bus to everywhere I want to go, so I will study the bus routes and plan my Wednesday. Fussen has the architecture that is typical ... read more
