My Room
My Room
Here's some more house picutes. This is my room. Very cozy.
More planning and decorating at school today. However, it was what we did after school that made my day. Sarah and I decided to accompany Chris to the bank in the mall near the school. We had seen an ice cream "shop" last time we were there but no one was working then. This time, however, we were in luck. I had peanut butter/caramel/chocolate ice cream scooped the way they do back home. It was heaven, although half of it melted on the way home. In other noteworthy happenings for the day, we heard knocking on our door at around 8pm [View Full Entry]

School was basically much of the same today. Although after school, at about 2pm in the hot Honduran sun, I got to play basketball with some other teachers and the principal. It was a ton of fun. However, everytime the principal would knock me over or I would fall down on my own because I'm clumsy, he would stop the game and make sure I was okay. I told him it was fine, keep playing, but I don't think he really got it. If nothing else it was good exercise. After we were done playing, Sarah, Chris, and I took our [View Full Entry]

Here is the living room/kitchen in our house.
My computer has been revived from where computers go when they die in Comayagua - the owner of the local Chinese food restaurant. Today after we arrived home from school, we heard a knocking on our door. Nadia went to answer it and was very confused as to who the chinese man was standing in the doorway. As Sarah and I came to look, we realized Mauricio (school administrator) was also there. AND they brought me a fixed computer. I was so excited that I wanted to hug the guy but I don't think he was the hugging type. The other [View Full Entry]

This is the before picture. When I'm done decorating, I'll try to post after shots.
So after basically a 6 day vacation, I started work yesterday at Escuela Bilingue Honduras. I'm very excited for the kids to come in about 2 weeks. We had a meeting with all the staff yesterday and all staff was able to meet each other. Today, I went to a training with the Spanish Speaking staff on how to use Microsoft movie maker on the computer. It is beyond cool. I'm hoping to make the equivelent of a supercool powerpoint of the my stay here using movie maker. Other than that my last two days have consisted of doing annual planning [View Full Entry]

Costa Rica Vs. Honduras
Costa Rica Vs. Honduras
There were no seats so we stood down by the field. This was our view.
Today we went to the Costa Rica vs Honduras soccer game in which "we" tied Costa Rica but lost to them in the tournament anyway because they beat Nicaragua by more than "us". We learned many things at the stadium however. One: Honduras is pronounced Own-Doo-Rahs during the cheers and if you pronounce the name of their country wrong, hondurans will not hestitate to laugh at you. Two: Even if you wear honduran soccer jerseys, people still know you're North American. Three: There might be pictures floating around of me out there somewhere as quite a few people took pictures of [View Full Entry]

Sarah and Rommel

I am a spaz...I captioned one of my earlier pictures wrong. The cathedral in the picture is in Plaza Colonial not Plaza Merced. Plaza Merced is just a smaller version of Plaza Colonial about 5 or 6 blocks away. I was confused. Nothing new. So I went for a walk around town today to try to gain my bearings on where everything was. For a town of 70,000 people it still seems very small. I went to the grocery store and discovered a very interesting product - beans in a bag. Its like a refried bean paste and all you have [View Full Entry]

Costa Rican Soccer Team in Action
Costa Rican Soccer Team in Action
Hey! I danced with one of the guys!
Today as I was walking around town, I was passed by a bus with "Minneapolis Metro School District" written accross the side of it. I felt a little twang of homesickness. After taking a freezing cold shower again today, I was ready for some hugs from home and some head start :) But the day was redeemed when I got a honduran newpaper and was able to read the world news. Later in the day Leah (new teacher from utah) arrived and we all made spaghetti dinner. We decided to return to Villa Real (where we discovered Port Royal) after dinner. [View Full Entry]

Church Bell at Night
Church Bell at Night
This is the view we had at Sarah's birthday dinner as we were eating out on the patio near the plaza. (Dinner=$1, 2 Beers=$1, View=priceless) Sorry, just like the fact that everything is so cheap here... [more]
I was very excited when I was told that our showers were going to have hot water as that is somewhat of a luxury in Central America. Sarah however informed me that it would be wise not to touch the shower head as the water is heated by electricity. Some how it seems to me that that was not very well thought out. Not to worry however, Jill and I took a shower at the same time and blew the electricity. Cold showers...brrrr. Jill and I promptly went to the school to let them know what had happened and they assured [View Full Entry]

Villa Real for Sarah
Breaking and Entering

Nicaragua vs. Honduras
Nicaragua vs. Honduras
The day was a bit overcast but you can still see the mountains in the background.
This morning I went to the school for a tour and to meet the principal. Mauricio, one of the administrators was supposed to pick up Sarah, Jill, and I between 8:30-9am to bring us to the school. At 11am I called the school, he assured us that he would be there in 5 minutes. 30 minutes later he arrived at the house. Somehow I feel like I'll fit in here just wonderfully. The school is huge (by Honduran stardards). It has two floors with an open air middle and apparently used to be a shopping mall. I will try to post [View Full Entry]

After a very stressful flight and arrival into the Tegucigalpa (capital of Honduras) airport, I have finally arrived at my new home, Comayagua, Honduras. I arrived at the Ohare airport this morning at 4:30a.m. which is very lucky considering the hotel failed to give us wake up calls. After a tearful goodbye to my mom and an hour of waiting in line to check in, I was informed that I would not be able to fly into Honduras on a one way ticket. Apparently they wanted assurance that I would leave their country at some point. After I smooth talked my [View Full Entry]
