It's mid-July here and hot as hell. My a/c is always on so I am usually not aware just how high the temperature is outside until I open the door. Of course, our halls and elevators are not air conditioned so you have the pleasure of feeling the stifling heat immediately once you set foot outside your own apartment. That said, I don't think the average Nanchang ren uses their a/c anywhere as liberally as I do. But I can't sleep in hot or humid weather, so my a/c goes 24/7 and I sleep under my down quilt as usual no matter how inane or hysterical that concept may be to locals. I worry more about food poisoning because I have yet to hear about China's health department making rounds like they do in the US, ... read more

Busy being boss...

couldn't resist the alliteration of the subject title, hehe. reality is i'm busy doing a lot of grunt work- printing, cleaning, and stuff like that. at least i'm not doing the cold calling for clients, hehe- the other boss does that! i think JQ hired someone today, but since this is china, who knows if they'll show up or how long they'll stay. i had a good impression of him, though. the water cooler arrived yesterday and JQ decorated the walls with sketches and biographies, so now the office looks even more complete. skype sessions with rich are proving fruitful- we got him the info needed to start up the website. i'm feeling quite lucky to be part of a capable team! the weak link is me, i'm the one who needs to get in gear ... read more

We finally got everything in the office set up! Six desks, phone/internet, sofa set, and a bunch of cacti. Rich is going to be our webmaster and it looks like everything is falling into place quickly. Recruiting is going all right, I guess- today some random guy showed up and started working on something. No one smokes at work, too, which I am really grateful for. So far, my "duties" have been to check e-mail and play online games while I look busy. Hehe. Too bad the office is such a long commute from the apartment... I'm feeling pretty irritable these days... not sure why. Weather is supposed to be highs in the 80's the next couple days... ... read more

i've been back in china for 8 days now... 4 days in beijing, 4 days in nanchang. noteworthiest of all news- from now on, no more atm fees for me! i found out that china construction bank is linked with bank of america, and i can withdraw money without incurring the $5 + 1% fee that china merchants bank was charging me. and it only took me three years to figure this out! i've come a long way from trying to western union myself money. ;) good weather today- high of about 60 degrees, sunny, and a good day overall for walking around trying to find a place to set up the office. stopped at wal-mart to get lunch (don't ask...) then rode over to JQ's and spent the day looking at potential places to rent. ... read more

thanks to a messed up sleep/wake cycle, i have been getting things done very early in the day. today at 5 am i filed my taxes. now i'm about to head off to see about shoe repair and light shopping (escada's 2010 fragrance and some capri pants/leggings at old navy). i feel like i don't really have enough time here in chicago to do all the things i need to do, but... hm. i noticed this week that my hair feels much healthier/softer when washed in the city water here (who knew). at&t surprised me with a $700 phone bill, and i had data roaming off so wtf? i'm eating ice cream even tho i should be trying to lose some weight. in china, seems they add water to their ice cream and weird artificial fruity ... read more

so.... i was contemplating a mc d's pineapple pie when my dainty self fell down a couple stairs, twisting my ankle, and literally almost passed out from the pain. after ten minutes of sitting on the ground (and being somewhat amused as an elderly man immediately whisked away the coke bottle i dropped) i attempted to walk again. i actually thought i was doing quite well hobbling along, but wei decided upon inspection that i had to go to a hospital and get checked out. i resisted, but wei insisted the hospital was close, and i wasn't in any condition to run away. so off we went to a "really good hospital, not a cheap one" as wei promised. they don't check for ID- you just sign yourself in. so i let wei sign me in ... read more

...as in sometimes i feel like i'm a misfit here and sometimes i wish everyone would just leave me alone. i guess nothing really brought on a statement like that- i'm just stressed out thinking about all the unpleasant things that await me back home in the US. paid our water bill for the last 3 months. actually, i didn't realize it was due until i went to brush my teeth this morning and only a trickle came out of the faucet. wei investigated and realized that we hadn't paid the water bill. (i guess the water company doesn't tape your bill to your door like the electric company.) anyway, 3 months of water cost us.... 13.9 RMB. this is despite my daily shower-till-the-hot-water-runs-out routine. woohoo.... that's like 60 some cents per month US. went "downtown" ... read more

today wei went to get a haircut and on the way home we stopped at a fruit market. i got my first-ever dragonfruit, some strawberries, and some oranges. there was a lot of exotic stuff that i had never seen before- google told me the purple things that look like a plum-persimmon cross are actually mangosteen (i have mangosteen lotion, but for some reason i thought the fruit would be more, uh, mango-like), that the red fig-like things are rose apples, and the hairy/spiny red lychee-looking things are just that- hairy lychees. seems so weird to come across so many exotic tropical fruits in the middle of this foggy cold weather... speaking of which, i'm planning to go to hainan before my trip back home to chicago. i'd like to go for a week and then ... read more

happy new year! taobao!

it's 2010~! aside from a flurry of texts from all my friends back home, it doesn't feel like a special day. wei went to work as usual, and to his dismay, i recently discovered the joys of taobao (www.taobao.com)! of course, taobao is not as regulated as, say, ebay, so knowledge of chinese is necessary to review seller feedback, etc. but i see i can buy all kinds of things from innova dog food (which my joonie eats back home) to fake uggs (of course, with varying levels of fakeness: fake name brand but genuine leather and sheepskin; genuine leather, fake sheepskin; fake everything). i bought a couple of items with wei and xiao zhu's help, so we will see what actually arrives. if i'm feeling ambitious i'll report back. :) ate a lot this week- ... read more

for christmas, the management for our apt/condo building decided to decorate the lobby. i came home the other day to be greeted by bunches of pastel colored balloons- very easter-appropriate- all over the front entrance. loose balloons on the floor, balloon bouquets taped to the walls, and balloons strung up in arches to decorate doorways. somehow, i just am not in a holiday mood... i don't mean this in a negative way, really... it just doesn't feel like christmas. this is also despite wal-mart playing one song on repeat, a chinese girl with a heavy accent singing "jingle bells", in a fake cutesy voice. it was maddening to the point where i had to leave- after about the tenth time hearing the song, it felt like it was being sledgehammered into my brain. this afternoon we ... read more
