I am now living at Maple Leaf International School in Jinshitan Resort near Dalian in China. I have been living in Nunavut, northern Canada for 22 years in 4 different communities. Before that I lived in Toronto, Nigeria and England. I spent most of the 1970's exploring and travelling around United Kingdom, Europe and parts of Asia.
I am a senior high drama and English teacher who loves to chat with other teachers, students and travellers.

After 5 weeks in China, I had the opportunity to fly to Hong Hong and visit an old friend for a few days. So I flew to Shenzhen in southern China and from there, I walked with ourschool principal who was going to Hong Kong as well. We had to take a bus , then walk across the border into Hong Kong. I would have had an interesting time trying to do it myself as we had to meander around through buildings and up and down stairs until we came to the crossing. Then we hopped on a fast train which took we into Hong Kong proper and Kowloon. After I met my friend, Alan, we headed to his apartment which is beautifully located in the Happy Valley race track area. Small apartment , but fantastic ... read more
Life around Maple Leaf International School is quite exciting and intriguing. Our school, with a student population of over 2400 with over 200 teachers, Chinese and Canadian, is located near the bay with sandy beaches stretching for a number of km. About 1 km from the school is the Discovery Theme Park which is gigantic. Loaded with rides and shows, it was drawing in huge numbers of families over the summer and only closed in October. We enjoyed the rides and a lovley Thanksgiving dinner back in October. Our school is beside a six lane highway that goes from Majitan( what used to be a relatively small community) to the beach. And I live in the teacher apartments, just across from the school which is quite large and surrounded by fences. When I was here three ... read more
What better activity for a weekend after a week of teaching, standing and talking and directing and shouting ( drama ) than to travel to a spa. So at 8:00am on Saturday we set off in our 16 seat bus to travel to our spa as well as to hike and go boating on this river in a lovely scenic series of valleys a few hours north east of Dalian. There were only 11 of us. We arrived at our spa hotel and after checking into our rooms ( took 2 minutes) we headed straight to the pools and hot tubs. The sun was shining but it was still cool. After soaking in the indoor hot tubs, we ventured out into a series of pools, all heated.Huge kidney or liver shaped pools, with jets of near ... read more
My first blog entry. I have been in China for over 2 months , but I have been so very busy with school, teaching, students, reports, marking. And yes, exploring and travelling around our interesting area here around Dalian and further afield. ( $1 = 5.35 RMB or roughly just over 5 RMB . Two months ago, $1 was well over 6RMB) This past weekend, I ventured off to Beijing. The one hour flight got me into Beijing airport at 8pm and I immediately took the train ( 25 RMB) to the subway where I hopped on for 2 RMB. Great deal. The only problem is that the subway is not walker friendly. I needed to tramp 100's of metres, it seemed, to go from one line to another. But it is fast and has frequent ... read more
