Hello people, I haven’t written one of these in a while and I know how much you’ve all missed them so here goes. I’ve always intended to visit Africa, and I’ve finally got round to doing it via signing up to do 9 weeks of volunteer work in Ghana. On the 7th August 2011 I flew to Accra the capital city of Ghana to start my 9 weeks of volunteer work. The flight from Heathrow left at 9:50am and I Arrived at Accra at around 7:00pm where I was picked up in a car by SYTO (the Ghanaian company who organize the volunteer work) and taken to the Pink Hostel where me and the fellow eight volunteers would be staying during our “orientation week” in Accra. It was an earlyish start the next morning so I ... read more

Right then after around 12 hours on a bus from Siem Reap we found ourselves back in Bangkok and Thailand on the 2nd August and ready for a big night out there before meeting up with Jules, Ox and Nic (friends from oz) at Koh pha ngan (an island off the south east coast of Thailand). The night out in Bangkok was good from what i can remember of it, we started off at an Irish bar on koh san road and bumped into a bunch of Irish girls we had met earlier on our travels in south east Asia. We also brought in a bottle of whiskey with a couple of pretty cool Canadian guys we had met that night. After that is a complete mystery to me, all i know is that the next ... read more

On the morning of the 7th July we crossed the Mekong river over to Lao and to Houei xai. After an extremely easy and hassle free border crossing we got on another boat and set of on a 2 day boat trip down the Mekong river to our first main destination in Lao, Luang Prabang. The boat journey was a little uncomfortable on the first day but the views along the river were beautiful and it was cool seeing all the various little villages along the river. After around 6 hours on the first day we stopped overnight at a place called Pakbeng. As soon as we got there we booked in to a guest house for 25000 kip each (under two pounds) and headed out for a meal and our first taste of beer Lao, ... read more

Right then after around 30 hours of various different buses, mini-buses and boats i arrived at Koh Phi Phi on the 24th June, an island at the bottom of Thailand. On the route there I stopped in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Hat yai (Thailand) and Krabi (Thailand) to change transport services and get some much needed refreshments. Once in Phi Phi i immediately booked in to a guest house, got a big feed, had a beer and was in bed by about 9 at night. The next couple of days I spent just relaxing on the beach and wandering around the main touristy area of Phi Phi, Ton Sai. Whilst walking around I went up to the main look out point looking over both Ton Sai bay and Loh Dalem bay which was beautiful and went on ... read more

From Kota Kinabalu we caught a plane haeading to the Phillipines on the 9th June at around 15:45. The plane was a little late but we arrived at Manila or so we thought at around 6 in the evening. At the airport with both me and Sam both feeling ill from food poisining (well thats what im going with) we immediately came to our first stumbling block as we were infact not in manila but Clark airport around a 2 hour drive away. After a little confusion and alot of hassle from taxi drivers we got on a bus to Manila. Once in Manila we got into a taxi and headed to a hostel we had previously looked up on the internet called the townhouse motel. Despite being extremely cheap costing around 225 pesos (around 2 ... read more

After around a 10 hour flight from Auckland we arrived in Brunei on the 31st May for the start of our 3 months in south east Asia. Immediately we felt the intense humidity and new we would have to get used to it pretty quick as it would be much the same everywhere. The first night in Brunei we stayed in the Brunei hotel as we failed to find the only backpackers in the whole city, it was still fairly cheap costing around 15 pounds each. The next morning we set off early to have a look around Brunei as we planned to head up to Malaysia and Kota Kinabalu later that day. We visited sights such as the Yaya San Complex, Omar Ali Saifaddin park, had a look at the markets and went inside the ... read more

Hello people, its been a while since i last updated my blog and the time has know come for us to leave New Zealand and depart to Asia for our final leg of travel before returning home. Since Christmas and New year in Australia me and Barbs have been living and working in Blenheim at the top of the south island. As soon as we got back from our holiday in aus i was immediately back to work on the vineyards for a company called Focus Solutions. The vineyard work i was doing for them included bud rubbing, wire lifting, leaf plucking, fruit thinning, netting and finally young vine training (ie preparing the young vines to grow correctly and well) This work was over a number of different vineyards going as far out as the Wariu ... read more

Right so after around 3 months on the north island we took the ferry across to the south island from Wellington to Picton on the 4th November. When we got to Picton we headed down to Christchurch to meet up with Dave and Goddings (friends from England) at the airport. On the way down we stayed over night at a holiday park so we could spend a day watching the American election and getting some much needed washing done!!! On the 6th we set off on a short trip down to Christchurch from the holiday park, this 30 minute drive ended up taking around 3 hours due to one of the tyres on the fargo blowing out, its pretty safe to say me and Barbs weren’t to hot at changing the tyre. Fortunately we managed to ... read more

Hello folks, its been a while as they say so i thought i should update you on what me and barbs have been up to for the last 3 months on the north island of New Zealand. To be honest its much as the title says we landed in Auckland on 30th July with no money so work was a necessity straight away! So we were in Auckland for 3 days sorting out our bank accounts, mobile phones and discovering the best place to get immediate work would be to go further north to kerikeri in the bay of islands. During our time in Auckland we managed to get ourselves on a free tour of the city, seeing various different attractions including the sky tower, the harbour bridge walk, mount Eden and the harbour. At the ... read more
