18th December Another early start. Still need to practice my lie-in. Sandboarding - $10 board hire and $50 deposit for two hours. A short drive out to the dunes and a lot of fun. Back to clean up and then food shopping. People in the Happy Chatter (general store) are very happy and very chatty. They recomend a place to look for work, I do. Go see the friendly ladies at Lancelin Accommodation Services; they seem interested and tell me Kim (male) will give me call later. Back at the hostel for kindle, phone call (Kim - see him tomorrow at 09h00 to start work), book myself into the YHA for another week., volleyball (it involves a volleyball and a net), food (sausages in bread) and ping-pong (shares a lot of the same rules as our ... read more

Awake before eight - need to remember how to sleep in. Spend the morning looking for ways to find work (JobShop, Gum Tree, etc) and most of the rest of the day reading. A walk around Lancelin to see where it is I am, it's not a big town so it's not a long walk. Nice looking town, friendly people, seaweed covered beach and an intermittent smell of sulphur. The boys come back from fishing in the afternoon more disappointed than yesterday, which I didn't think was possible. Steak (cut: Oyster Blade) and sausages on the BBQ for dinner from the General Store. Comes to less than $5 for both me and Simon for the meet and salad, the bread is the most expensive item. I buy a carton of beers to clear my debts with ... read more

Goon hangover, again. We're all suffering. The plan was to stay in Geraldton a few days and figure out what to do with my life (well, Christmas). Ant and Jade are moving south, Simon is going with them and they've invited me to tag along for a few more days. Why not. Check the bank, I've been paid. Sweet! Brings the balance to $3,000. Bakery breakfast ($5.50 for a sandwich and $2.50 for a can of fizzy) and we hit the road. Takes almost six hours toe get to Lancelin, but that includes stops for the Pinnacles (a fossilised forest) and lunch (sausages and buns, cooked on a free park BBQ next to the beach). Jade and Ant already have a place book so Simon and I check in as well. $27 a night, would be ... read more

13th December Worse for wear this morning. Probably from the cheap wine, but could also be the heat, tiredness, etc. Making tuna pasta for lunch I find a jar of pasta sauce in the fridge that expired a year to the day. I put it back where I found it. Spend the day hanging around the caravan doing nothing and relaxing - can't wait to get out of here. I'm not leaving Karratha, I'm running away. From the people, from the things I've done here and the things this town seems to demand from people. When I flew to Karratha all of my possessions fit into my rucksack, with ease; now my rucksack is bulging and I have a full day bag. Need to readjust for Australian travelling. Drop the car off at Eagle Boys and ... read more

My travel is on hold while I earn some money in Karratha. This entry is more a diary than a travel blog, if this annoys you don't read it. POM: Prisoner of Mother England. - silent 'E'? 5th December Worked 07h00-13h00 to 16h30-22h30 More events work in the morning. Feel bad about running out on Gary without giving him much notice until he comes into work; ask him about the lock on the caravan and he says, "I'm too busy, fix it yourself." - no more guilt. Something wrong with my time sheet; according to the one at work I've worked 2.75 more hours than the notes I've kept on my laptop. Meet Simon in McD's for internet; looking for camper-vans and booking tickets out of here. I realise that my idea of luxury has changed ... read more

My travel is on hold while I earn some money in Karratha. This entry is more a diary than a travel blog, if this annoys you don't read it. 29th November 07h30-10h45 and 16h00-22h30 Woken at 06h50 when Gary brings Simon (18, English) to the caravan. He's our new room mate. It's going to get cosy. With Simon learning how to make dough I get to forks and other count event stuff. The shop next door was robbed last night. McD's for internet, the boys are already there. Take Simon to Coles for groceries and spend my tips (down to $1). Use the swimming pool at the Caravan park. It's kind of nice. Get nobby to clear some of his junk from the cupboards at our end so we have more space. Simon is on the ... read more

Maybe I was a little harsh on Karrath last time. It's a hard desolate place, but it's also beautiful in its way. The days are hot and dry, but the sunsets are spectacular with so much space to show off. And the nights have the stars, of so many stars. I had to drive to a mining station one night and in its own way it too was beautiful with the lights and the flames; it could have been mistaken for a circus. My original opinion of the people is based on Gary (everyone else I work with is just passing through), and that's not fair. Doing deliveries I've met more people. They work hard and play hard, and are nothing like my boss. I've spoken with the other people I work with, locals and travellers, ... read more

Notes on Karratha

December 2nd 2011

Australia feels like it's stuck in the 80's and 90's. Perth felt like a city that was near the end of the nineties and Karratha feels strongly stuck in the eightys. Karratha is exactly how I imagine Australia to be. The land is hot and barren, hostile and red. There's a tourist information on the edge of Karratha (actually outside of town so you'd have to drive there) and I can't figure out what they sell. All Karratha has going for it is dirt and leaving. How popular can dirt be? There are flies everywhere. As soon as you step into the sun they flock to you. It's worse here than anywhere I went in Asia. Perth was almost as bad. 99% of the population is here to earn money and leave. If there was a ... read more

This is more a diary of my working life whilst I travel than a TravelBlog. If this isn't what you are looking for Don't read it. Read one of the none work entries or message me. 25/11/11- Nadin's PlayStation gets taken (stolen?) from the caravan. I'll take my camera and laptop with me to work from now on. Hastens my desire to leave. Bought some work clothes ($15 shoes, $10 black jeans, $5 socks). 82cm waist = 32" waist - I can't remember if that's good or bad. Jeans here only come in one length, ridiculously long. Caught up on internetz (via McDonalds) Worked 06h30-09h45 and 17h00-21h45 = $495 so far. Another Message from Theresa with more details about Tim's trip from Argentina to Maine. A subsidised year long trip from Argentina to Maine - tempting. ... read more

I haven't found internet yet, so who knows when I'll post this. Chances are that I wont post much after this, maybe just once the week; because a) no internet and b) working life is dull. 06h00 alarm. Three slices of toast and a shower. Picked-up at 06h30 and given the keys to a car. This morning's job is making pizza bases. All morning work is cash in hand. It takes four hours (06h45-10h45). I get to keep the car, but can only use it to get between work and the caravan. Gary, the shop owner, has a serious chip on his shoulder, I don't know why. He's quick with criticism, short on praise and tight with money. He treats everyone who works for him like idiots and the staff are all in a hurry to ... read more
