April 9th 2012

2nd April A bus from the Redland Bay ferry terminal to Brisbane CDB costs $9 and a bed in a 6-bed dorm is $30 - expensive, but it has a private bathroom and I have the room to myself when I check in. A wander into town to see what there is and use the State Library for free internet. There's almost nothing on GumTree, but I send out a couple of replies. I get an e-mail from some French girls and a phone call from an Australian guy. It's a bad connection but I think the Australia wants people to move a relocate, he gives me the phone number for a German girl. He doesn't know here name. Leaving the library I call the German girl (Sandra) and arrange to meet tomorrow. Shopping for dinner ... read more

April 2nd 2012

27th March Matthias and I carry on north. I get Matthias to take me to Redland Bay and after a bit of trial and error we find the Island Ferry. Buying my ticket ($16.60 return) I gain an hour from daylight savings. I say goodbye to Matthias and am on my own again. It's a short ferry ride and then I'm on Karragarra. I have no idea where I'm going. Somewhere at the bottom of my bag is Geoff's address, probably. I remember it's on Treasure Island Avenue, but where's that? I pick a direction and walk, until a lady on a golf cart pulls up alongside me and asks if I want a lift. Unfortunately Treasure Island Ave. runs the whole lenght of the island and I don't know which end I want. She only ... read more

20th March Awake at seven, everyone else is still asleep so I sneak out of the room to call home. It's a little confusing that it's Tuesday morning for me and Monday night in England. Lazy morning getting the last of our stuff together and planning for Sydney. A 45 minute walk to Dee Why to use the library, grab some lunch and some shopping from Coles. It's warm and sunny. The walk back seems twice as long. Someone throws n ice-cream at Matthias. Still early and with no plans Sandra wants to head into Sydney CBD. Anna wants to stay in the room and write a story so the three of us catch a bus to Manly Waft ($3.60 on a 10 trip pass) and catch a ferry ($7). Sandra goes for an ice-cream whilst ... read more

7th March - last night in a bed for a while? Just noticed that all the entries I wrote until now for March had '#th February' as the title. Times flies. Wake early. Not sure if it'sthe banging in the corridor, the noise outside, the couple in the bunk beneath me cuddling or others in the room getting dressed. Wash, dress and check-out. I don't even bother with the free food. Lug my bag (25 kgs?) across town and ask for a bed at the Metro YHA (place I stayed last time I was in Melbourne). No beds in 8-person dorms so I take a bed ina a 4-bed ($32). I can't check-in until noon/one so I leave my luggage (another $2) and head to the library. I want to fix my laptop and upload some ... read more

25th February Lie-in a little longer than I mean to - no harm no foul. Breakfast, e-mail, shower. Message from Krista when she lands and anthoer when she gets the car. I walk to meet her once she's lost in the city. Thankfully she's not as Finnish as her FaceBook photos. She gives me the keys and we drive around a bit looking for free parking near Salamanca Market. We park in a residentail street and walk through the parks to get there. Do some shopping (chopping board and drinks). I make a half hearted attempt to find a kindle sleeve. Move the car again to near the hostel and go shopping for camping gear. I buy a sleeping bag ($39) and roll matt ($9.95), Krista looks for trousers. Check into hotsel ($23 a bed in ... read more

23rd February I wake at 06h20. My flight leaves at 06h50 and I have to be there 30 minutes before take off. I wake Ben, but it's a 20 minute drive so back to sleep. Ben gets up again at nine to go get Michy. We say goodbye and I wait for Nathan to get up. Weigh myself for the first time since Bali, 68kg to 75 kg (12 stone). Australia is making me fat. Check online and the cheapest flight leaving today is $250. The cheapest tomorrow is $79. I'll wait the extra day. Nathan gives me a lift the Melbourne Metro YHA ($32 a night). Grabbing lunch I bump into Simon and we head to the library to steal internet and book flights to Tasmania (Booking# Z23SSE). A lift from the hostle to the ... read more

February 16th - 1BOY 399 Alarm goes off at 08h30, but no-one shifts until gone half past. Checkin out I see that yesterday when I paid for one night they charged me for two. I can't get a refund for my $27 because that's too complicated so they give me a $81 refund (onto my card) and I have to pay the boys back. To the library to steal internet. Meet Ben at the cafe next to the YHA. Still contemplating the lift with the two French girls, but Ben seems OK so I grab my bag and take his offer for a lift. Stop in Hahndorf for a beer and a pie. It's a twon that's trying to be German. Coorong National Park to watch the Pelicans. Kensington SE, there's a 40-foot lobster and no ... read more

14th February Pancake Breakfast. After 10 months backpacker conversations are boring - I keep hearing the same conversations over and over again when people don't know each other very well. One more good reason to head home? Pack bags, check-out and check back in again. Back in the same room, minus bedding and towels. I pay the $7.95 for a 24 hour internet pass so I can upload my photos. The boys want to find a surf shop and I want to see Adelaide. After the Jam Factory (no jam, it's a design studio!!). The boys go in search of a surf shop and I head to the Art Museum and the Migration Musuem (both free). Back for lunch where I meet the boys, do some shopping and use some internets. There's a couple of ads ... read more

2nd February A lot more humid today than it has been and the sky is looking very grey. Pack the last of our bags, strip beds and Ollie goes on a date. We are meant to be meeting Steph at 11h00, 12h00 comes and goes before she sends a text to say she's on her way to Murdoch station. Louise drives us in and we load up'the beast' with our bags - Step already has two years in AUstralia and six months in Perth crammed into most of the space. A quick stop in Busselton to see the Longest Jetty in southern hemisphere (1,968 metres?). It's $2.50 (each) to walk the length of it so we just visit the gift shop/information centre. Stock up on food - communal cooking goes out the window after 20 minutes ... read more

January 31st 2012

28th January Wake-up late and enjoy a lazy breakfast in an empty house - I really wouldn't mind holding out here a few days until Simon's HDD arrives, but I know Simon is keen to get moving again. The quiet gives me time to think about what I want to do next. The current plan is to hitch around across the Nullarbor and carry-on exploring the south and east coasts until March, visit NZ and then head to SA. Now I'm thinking 'What's the rush?' Simon's plan is to stay until November and whilst I don't want to stay here that long staying a few more months might make my life easier - if I can find a job in a mining town. Swim in the pool, watch movies and make plans for tomorrow and getting ... read more
