Landed sometime after midnight and then had to go through all the usual hassle of immigration, luggage collection and customs. Loads of people and the airport's about as efficient as Heathrow... maybe not that bad. Hotel sent car to collect us, just as well as people everywhere. Hard to spot sign with my name on amoung the dozens on display. Made it to hotel about 02:20. Greeted by owner(?), but didn't bother to check in. Grabbed a drink, showered and headed to bed. Nice hotel; much nicer than we expected for the money. I even got a Double Bed!! First impressions of Lima... Maybe a little rough. Most buildings have 6' fences or walls, often topped by razor wire or electric fencing. Security cameras on a lot of buildings and cars not kept on streets over ... read more

Flight out of Santiago is at 22:05 tonight, but we got to check out of the hotel by 12:00 today. Had a lazy morning and crawled down for breakfast about 09:30. Went back to room to back and crash until closer 12:00. Should probably fix yesterdays blog, maybe when I get back to England. Haven't seen any Obese Chileans yet (over weight but not obese), unlike Brazil... but they may have been tourists. Have seen street jugglers: guys that stand in in front of traffic at lights and perform tricks including flame juggling) and then collect money from cars before the light changes. After checking out and moving bags to left luggage we took a walk up Cerro San Cristobal to look at virgin. A good workout. Were told it would take 3 hours to get ... read more

Going to try jotting down a few things now and posting this later, or maybe not. Continental breakfast on the South American Continent seems to consists of gooey jam on bread products (rolls, toast, crackers, bread). This mornings also came with a tea pot full of hot milk. After breakfast we walked to Cerro Sta. Lucia, a big park near the hotel. Nice park, mostly a hill with a fort on the top. The game of getting to the top involved avoiding sprinkler systems. Great views of the city (goes all the way to the horozin even from the top of the hill). DUring the tour later the guide said that the hill and the fort are all artificial and were added later to tidy the city, but not sure of dates. Next we wandered the ... read more

Lazy start to the day so have uploaded photos to older entries, something I meant to do before now. The time is 09:20 and the sun is already blazing, looks like another scorcher. Amazing how quickly you adapt to different climates, I remember thinking how hot and humid it was when we got off the plane. Time for breakfast and then see what Santiago has to offer. ... read more

Might finally get my blog up to date, I'm going to try entering todays entry TODAY and with no photos to upload it shouldn't take long. It's the simple pleasures. Semi-early start in Punta Areanas as we didn't know how much time to allow for chaos at the airport. Everyone else leaving from the Antarctica trip to Santiago had the same idea (and booked the same flight) so people stole our first two taxis. THe hotel had a half dozen taxis booked so worked out OK. Forgot to mention in yesterdays blog that Punta Areans isn't a very big place, so with us knowing 60 people in the town we kept seeing familiar faces. Same this morning at the airport. OK flight, good movie ('Brothers'), managed a little sleep. Santiago is a massive city. From the ... read more

Added reference to the snow angles we made in Yankee Harbour to yesterdays blog. We haven't taken many pictures since we left Antarctica so photo's are going to be thin on the ground until we get back in the habit. I'm writting this on the night of the 15th and I've just finished writting up what we did today (15th) in my journal, copying things across now but can't promise I'll get the tense right. Really hard to believe that the stuff I'm putting in here was less than 48 hours ago. Started the day with the usual wake-up calls (with 30 minutes extra lie in) and breakfast. We had to have all our bags backed before breakfast so plenty of confusion about what to wear and how to get different gear to differnt places. First ... read more

Now the bit we came all the way down here to do, search for white nosed polar bears (I don't care what the guy said yesterday about antarctic mammals). At 05:30 general announcement that land was in sight and then something about low visibility so we decided to have a lie in. Rouse for 07:30 breakfast call. Still very low visibility and wind speed is 40 knots (nautical term for 50 mph?). Other boats in the area have abandoned any hope of landings for the day but our boat wants to give it a go anyway. My sort of people. We head to Yankee Harbour. Feel over dressed wearing thermals, layered clothing, winter riding suit and waterproof layer. Until I step outside, should have packed another scarf. Only cold parts of me are the exposed parts, ... read more

Shortest entry in my journal so far. Entry in hand written journal is 2 paragraphs, but only because I had nothing else to do. Nothing to photograph so no photos today. The day was spent crossing the Drake. The weather was a little better so a couple more passengers walking around, just long enough to get a bite to eat before sleeping again. No illness for me so I gave the cabin to Gareth and Chris for the day and went to watch the lectures: Antarctic History (it's not that old), Climate and Meteorology (Europe is going to freeze) and Penguins (the littlest breed of penguin is the 'Little Penguin'!!!). We're going to a wedding tomorrow.... read more

Up at 06:30 this morning to stop at the light house on Cape Horne. Last piece of land before two day crossing to Antarctica. All that's here is a monument, a light house and a lot of unexploded land mines. And a couple of penguins. Not sure what the monument was about as all the signs are in Spanish. Some penguins swam along side the ship as we set sail, could see them jumping across the waves. Not much else happened, just a long trip across open water. 3 meter waves so most people are in their cabins being sick. Not me. Watched a video about 1920's ship sailing the drake. Passengers are mixed bunch. 40% are retired Americans (bucket list). Large group of Russians and handful of younger Americans, young Europeans and one Indian family. ... read more

First day of cruise

I'm not sure where we were at the end of the first night after getting on the boat. The last stop for the boat was Puerto Williams in Patagonia, but I'm jump ahead. The morning in Ushuaia was bright and sunny (still not warm). The whole town is surrounded by mountains so we spent the morning wandering around, taking photos and being tourists. The Town seems to have three products: lamb, chocolate and tourist tat. Half the roads have a 45 degree incline, but the other half are OK. Went to the docks to catch the cruise; people running the docks didn't seem to have any idea what was happening so we sorted ourselves out. Lots of briefings and safety talks, just as well as the boat left an hour late. Good food. Stick warning not ... read more
