MikeJo - Mike and Jo Coad

Mike and Jo Coad Hi,

We are Mike and Jo Coad, two 50+ year olds from the South-East of England. We have taken the decision to give up our home and jobs and join the numerous other back-packers travelling around the globe in search of new experiences.

Whilst it would have been nice to say we came to this decision after winning the National Lottery, sadly that wasn’t the case. We plan to sell the house that has been our home for the past 25 years and use the bulk of the equity to buy a smaller property outright. Any remaining balance will fund our trip. We reasoned that we could never benefit from the equity whilst living in our house and that if we put off the decision for a few more years, we might make a larger profit but other factors such as health may possibly prevent us from such adventurous travels in the future.

Whilst many people travel without having seen any of their own country first, we are fortunate in that we have had the opportunity to extensively visit almost every region of not only England but Scotland, Wales and Ireland too. Our travels have also taken us to the USA on several occasions as well as to two Caribbean islands and a fair number of European countries.

However, we have never visited Asia before so this seemed the obvious first choice. Not only would the culture be totally different to what we are used to but our money would go much further there than most parts of the world. The plan is to travel for about a year or so, come back to England for a month or two and then go off again to another part of the world providing we have some funds left over. If not, at least we will have had the pleasure of experiencing Asia.

After our ‘Grand Tour’ is finally over, we hope to pursue our interest in family history by setting up our own genealogical research business.

Whilst we have had every encouragement from family and friends, we have no doubt that one or two of them are secretly thinking we have lost our marbles to take such a risk at our age but as the saying goes ‘Nothing ventured, nothing gained’.

We hope you will follow this diary which will be regularly updated as we make our plans, go on our trip and finally return home.

If you wish to be added or deleted from the list of regular recipients each time the diary is updated, please let us know. Likewise, if you have any comments, please feel free to add them using the link at the bottom of each diary page.

Thank you for your interest in following our trip and we hope you can, in theory at least, share some of our experiences as we tour Asia.

Mike and Jo Coad

Hello everyone, Oh God, it's those two blithering idiots again, I hear you saying. 1. Did they survive the fleshpots of Pattaya? 2. Did the heat and humidity of the Malaysian jungle not kill 'em off? 3. Where in heavens name are they bothering me from this time? Well, 1) Yes we did. 2) No it didn't. 3) Hang on; I'll just look out the window. Hmmm, looks very much like the streets of Yangon below. Now, before you all get on your high horse and tell me we've got no morals visiting such a country, I would like to set [View Full Entry]

Hello blog addicts, No doubt the one or two smarter people (OK one)on our subscriber list has deduced from the title of this blog that we have arrived in steamy Bangkok. As most of you are getting on in years and your tickers are weakening by the day (you can count on me to cheer you up), it wouldn't do to rush headlong into a report on just how steamy this city really is, so I'm afraid you'll have to be patient and wade through a lot of boring stuff about Nepal first. We finished our last report with our arrival [View Full Entry]

Hello readers, Some call it Bombay. Others call it Mumbai. I prefer a mixture of the two..... Bumbuy. Coincidentally, this name also describes the poor value you can expect should you ever have the misfortune to find yourself in this City. Our train from Ahmedabad pulled in to Bumbuy Central Station roughly on time but the station was so far North of the area we were heading for (the tourist mecca of Colaba) that I fully expected the greeting touts to be steering huskies instead of taxis. Every other car on the road in Bumbuy is a taxi. They are all [View Full Entry]

Greetings one and all, We left you last time as we were about to board our train at Agra station at around 5.30am for a 6.10am departure to Jaipur, just a short 5 hour hop away. Things didn't quite work out that way. There was an announcement that the train was running about one hour late. At 7.00am there was still no sign of it and we were told there would be another 45 minute wait. Needless to say, that deadline passed too and a new time of 9.00am was 'guessed at' by the station staff. The train finally arrived at [View Full Entry]

Jaipur (The Pink City)

Hello everybody, We have now arrived in Rajasthan to visit Jaipur (The Pink City), Jodhpur (The Blue city), Jaisalmer (The Golden City) and Udaipur (The White City). However, this epistle only covers our visit to Agra (The Shit Brown City) and New Delhi (just The Shit City). The delights of Jaipur, Jodhpur et al will be revealed in our next novel. OK, if you're sitting comfortably, we will begin with New Delhi, which for the geographically incapacitated, is the capital of India. Our headline has no doubt given you a clue already as to the type of people we ran into. [View Full Entry]

Hello from Chandigarh or if you're brave enough to sample some of the street food here, Chunderfar might be a more appropriate name. We filed our last report just after we arrived in Mcleod Ganj, a former British hill station. For those of you who were not around in the days of the Raj, hill stations are mountain villages where the British army would spend the Summer months away from the oppressive heat of the towns lower down the valley. Our journey there took 8 hours from Amritsar and cost less than GBP 1 each, albeit on a local bus. Now, [View Full Entry]

Hello All, We left you last time as we were about to catch our bus to Lahore from Peshawar and very good value it was too. A 6-1/2 hour trip for just over a fiver and they throw in all the drinks you want, lunch, a free newspaper plus headphones to watch a film or listen to a fair choice of radio stations. National Express have got a long way to go before they catch up. Every seat is a recliner with plenty of leg room plus a foot rest. There were only 10 other passengers as most Pakistanis wouldn't dream [View Full Entry]

We checked in to Greens and they asked us if we wanted a standard or deluxe room. Glancing at the rates on the wall, we worked out the deluxe was less than GBP 1 extra so decided to splash out. We were not that surprised to find that the Pakistani meaning of deluxe differed somewhat from the English meaning. Although adequate, the room is very shabby with plenty of stains on the carpets, furniture, curtains and walls. It is also the size of a shoe-box and we keep tripping over each other as we move around the room. The breakfast is [View Full Entry]

Greetings from Peshawar or as the locals like to pronounce it.... Piss Shower. Firstly, if anyone......ever again......and I mean ever again......in my lifetime.......mentions the words chicken and corn soup or mutton.....I will not be responsible for my actions. You have been warned! Now I've got that off my chest (or to be more exact, out of my backside), it's time to update you on what we've been up to in the past 3 weeks. It has not been possible to send an update before now due to there being no Internet service in the areas we have been visiting. Believe me, [View Full Entry]

OK, hands up all those who thought we were joking about coming to Is-scam-abad? Well, we're here and have survived our first day although if we have to cross too many more roads, our chances of a long life are looking pretty slim. However, before we give you the sordid details about our journey to, and arrival in, Pakistan, we are going to recap the last couple of weeks before we left the U.K. Apart from our film clubs annual ramble which we very much enjoyed (especially the pub lunch bit), much of the time was spent shopping for last minute [View Full Entry]
