Mida n Shel - Simon & Shelley

Simon & Shelley The call of the world is too great. For the past 12 months we have been planning to move over to London and base ourselves there, working contract and freelance jobs so it gives us the flexibility to get out and travel, London seems so close to everything. We are renting out our house, leaving our jobs, family, friends and our dogs and setting off for a once in a lifetime opportunity.

If we don’t do this now, we will regret it for the rest of our lives.

We want to get out of our comfort zone, experience as many different cultures as we can. So far we have booked a 3 week trip to Nepal trekking the Annapurna Circuit, then on to India for a weeks visit before landing in London. While in London we want to go to many places in Europe - Scotland, Ireland, France , Italy, Sweden, Denmark and Greece just to name a few. We would also love to see Egypt. Of course all this depends on the budget. But perhaps our most sought after trip is going to Peru and visiting Michu Picchu.

It will be an exciting adventure, we are both very active people. Before we fly out in February 2008, we will have completed a number of fun runs, even a full and half marathon. Our blogs in the future are sure to be full of many stories of treks and bike rides and adventure activities etc. And with my profession being a video editor, there will be plenty of video highlights to view.

There are quite a few things and places I want to experience while away on this trip, one of the top ones is to go to Wimbledon. We can now tick that off the list. Shelley had heard from her workmates that there were groundpasses available for Wimbledon and that after 5pm they were just half price. I thought it would be a waste of time even getting there as the Australian open finishes it's outside court games around 5/6pm. Then I realised that it doesn't get dark in London til 10pm. We made the short journey by tube, just one [View Full Entry]

PART 1 - The Recce I have been lucky enough to have started working with a company based in London that specialises in travel-type programs, with videos shown on British Airways and London Cabs. I thought they were mainly focussed on promoting London, but my first project with them took me all the way to Mallorca, Spain. I had a meeting with them mid week and 3 days later on I was on a plane (unfortunately without Shelley) to Mallorca on a recce to research the Balearic Islands leading hotel chain. Myself, the cameraman Tom and also the director of the [View Full Entry]

We have touched down in London finally - after 18 months of planning we are finally at the place we will call home for at least a year. And we were lucky enough to be greeted by something we hadn’t seen much of at all in our lives - snow! Yes, going from a stifling 35 degrees in India to 2 degrees and snow in London is definitely a shock to the system! We arrived with virtually nothing - just our rucksacks. No place to stay, no jobs but luckily money (which very quickly vanishes when you have Australian dollars paying [View Full Entry]

A great Holi-day

 Asia » India » Rajasthan
When we were planning this trip last year, there were so many places we wanted to visit before we arrived in London. Nepal was a definite, China a close second, but when it came down to the logistics and cost, India was the ideal choice. We went to a slide night for World Expeditions talking about Nepal. They said if you are going to Nepal, you might as well spend a few days in India to see the Taj Mahal. That was the final selling point. We had heard all the stories about India and the common thing people said was [View Full Entry]

Typical rural scenery from the first few days
18 days of walking 200 kms up to an apex of 5416m, passing through medieval-like villages, meeting friendly locals, capped off with elements of danger by walking along razor-sharp ridges with 100m drops, bomb blasts and even the minor threat of running into Maoist "terrorists". No, this isn't an idea for a Hollywood blockbuster, but just some of the interesting parts of our Annapurna trek. KATHMANDU Our initial meeting in Kathmandu was very relaxed and there were 9 people in our group, just 2 guys. Immediately we knew the others in our group were fantastic people and everyone hit it off. [View Full Entry]

Heading towards the Manang District

After what seemed an eternity, we are finally on our trip of a lifetime - first stop Nepal. It took 3 flights to get here, the last one being in first class (albeit for a 90 minute flight). The final descend into Kathmandu was amazing, outside the windows we could see in the far distance the mighty Himalaya, it was funny watching everyone rush over to that side of the plane to get a glimpse of Mt Everest. In a few days time we would actually be trekking our way through some of those mountains. Eventually we landed at Tribuvan airport, [View Full Entry]

Ready to go!

 Oceania
After about 18 months of talking about it, Shelley and I have finally left Australia ready for our big adventure. I'm writing from our hotel in Kathmandu Nepal - and what a road it has been to get here. I thought I'd fill you in on everything we needed to do to, just in case you decide to do it yourself. Firstly the nightmare of organising a British Ancestry Visa. We thought we would be smart and apply last July, but that was way to early - only 3 months before we arrived could we apply. So we waited til mid [View Full Entry]

A trip to Sydney in 2003 and a day trip climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge
Welcome to the travel Blog of Simon and Shelley from Melbourne, Australia. We thought we would do something a bit different and give you a quick rundown on our travelling history, how we met and our plans for the future (plus we have a heap of photos and videos that we need any excuse for posting). Firstly we will start with Shelley’s first adventure overseas. In 1997 she decided to take some time off Uni and head over to the U.S.A. to travel around and also work as a camp counsellor. She spent about 3 months there, visiting the west coast [View Full Entry]
