Opotiki to Gisborne Firstly, a word of apology about the photos appearing as they do. Don't ask me why but it is impossible to sort them properly so they appear in the wrong entry. Sort it out yourself I suppose and guess where they are meant to go. Then we got to Opotoki from where we did a full day's cycling in good weather to Maraetai Bay. The hostel here was great, right on the beach a sprawling wooden construction with outdoor fire. It was run by a generous spirited and enthusiastic Maori guy and son. It was tempting to stay another few nights to dive and chill but instead off at the crack of dawn to Hicks Bay. We were drenched a few times on this one and went on to the Kawakawa Hotel in ... read more

Cycling for Real We left Auckland on 6 December catching the train into town and then the ferry to Coromandel town. A lovely day with the sun out but with a bit of cloud to help us up the hill. After a stop for lunch we started out on the steepest hill we could find straight up to 360 metres. We had spectacular views all the way up even when we were walking and then on the decent, seeing both sides of the peninsular. Managed to call into another internet cafe to catch up with news from home. It's good to hear from everyone and know that we've lost another manager for instance. Carrying on around the Coromandel we stoppped at Hahei to visit the Cathedral Cove and go kayaking on the ocean. This coast ... read more

And To New Zealand So we arrived in New Zealand last week as scheduled and took the shuttle to our accommodation with ease. The bike boxes have survived more or less intact to here and we have left them at our first stop ready for collection in March when we leave for Melbourne. We've taken the cycle ride round Auckland. We've had a super dinner in the revolving restaurant 30 storeys high on Sky Tower (thanks Anne and Graham for Michael's birthday present) and we have moved to see Fay Hobday of Servas. She lives on the beach in a three storey glass house of amazing comfort. While there we took a ferry to Waiheke Island which is really hilly. We met our match there with a near vertical slope following a good lunch and swim ... read more

We Have Arrived in the South Pacific We have had a wonderful time in Tahiti and Moorea soaking up the sun and coping with the heat day and night. It was amazing to have night time temperatures the same as day time. We only cycled on Moorea really and went round it once over three days between hotels/cabins. We found a Club Med site totally closed off with a lovely beach next to one hotel we found and then we moved to the other side to one we had already booked for Michael's birthday. They were both comfortable hotels of small self contained cabins with a few rooms at the back. Anyway we made best use of the deserted beaches around the Club Med site and swam over to the island next to the coral reef ... read more
