Lagos We had a lovely time with Anne, Graham and Ben. We managed to show Ben the sea and waves for the first time. He seemed to enjoy himself which meant that his parents relaxed as well. It was a real highlight. The campsite was very well run and impressed us both. But we had to say goodbye on Sunday so that they could return to work. And we took off to explore the west coast of Portugal. Alentejo We always knew this coast from our stays in Feragudo as it was where we went to find some cooler air, about 10C. However, as we are going much further north we have found some gems where the Portugese go more than other northern Europeans. We liked Odeceixe with its beach on the river, Odemira, Porto Covo ... read more

Waiting for Anne, Graham and Ben It is now Sunday afternoon, 29 March, two weeks before Easter. Thus A, G & B have got a good deal with Easyjet and Touriscampo (where we are stopped) for a few days in the sun. We have experienced a little expense here with the radiator leaking while we were in Spain. Unfortunately we could not find the leak at the first garage as it was raining hard and so it was all wet anyway. We moved on to a favourite town, Tavira, where we found the garage which solved our problem for loads of euros. This meant that we had to wait around and we used a parking space at Pedras d'el Rei with access to Isla Tavira over a pontoon bridge. A lovely spot with the added advantages ... read more

A week in Conil We have found a lovely campsite with wifi in the van so that we can listen to Radio 4 whenever we want to. It really makes a change in the holiday. Cuts us off a bit from other people and the country but keeps us in touch with the family and friends. We have each morning logged on to BenCam when we join our grandson at his first meal in the day and even catch Graham before he goes off to work. Its been great. Otherwise here we have had some great cycle rides and walks in the woods or the beach. Conil is a pleasant, unspoilt Spanish town with a lovely sandy beach. We eventually found a really short ride into town about half the distance on the main road. We ... read more

Traveling East in the Algarve Just popped into the library in Tavira in the eastern Algarve looking for wifi but no power in the laptop so am on a pc. We have had lovely weather up till yesterday when we felt rain again. Other than that we have had unbroken sunshine which has allowed us to make some lovely back roads cycle rides. The ones from Salema to Sagres and to Lagos were delightful. It appears that there is an off main road cycle way all along the Algarve coast from the Spanish border to Cape Vincent. It is not all complete but the bits that are are worth while catching which is what we have tried to do. We are almost at the end of Portugal and so the next stop is either Seville or ... read more

We've found the sun in Portugal We crossed Spain in some cold weather but amazing countryside and towns. We entered Portugal and stopped at Belmonte a little way from Salamanca. After various stops in some windy and cold weather we have come down to the Alentejo at a place called Monte Barao a little east of Sines south of Lisbon. It is a nice campsite 1.5 km up a dirt track but with fine facilities and wifi we can connect with while sitting in the van. Thanks for the messages from people. They are good to have. Also we are contactable through Skype if you have the connection. Since we have been here we have not seen a cloud and it has been lovely though not as warm as in the summer. It is going up ... read more

France and Spain ahead of the snow We have met up with some friends in France, near Evreux and near Bergerac. That was really lovely as they were both very pleased to see us again. We also got fed enormous amounts of good food and wine. We were able to give them each some of the new batch of marmalade. When we were in Evreux we were warned of the snow about to engulf northern Europe including England. So we heard on Radio 4 (longwave) about how the snow was affecting the transport arrangements in the south and then the north. We got reasonable quantities but the snow ploughs were out and sorted the main roads. However, we did not get going the next day. Our new battery which Jack helped fit with great difficulty failed ... read more

Getting ready for a winter trip to Europe We are planning to go to Spain and Portugal this winter leaving on Tuesday 27 January. Lesley also fancies catching a ferry over to Africa and touring Morocco. An interesting adventure for us to new places. Otherwise we shall visit some of the same sites we stopped at in 2008. We shall update this blog as a card to our friends on an occasional basis. If you don't want to get notification of this blog then let me know and we shall stop the emails. Meanwhile we prepare slowly to get ready to go. Regards. Michael and Lesley... read more

A Week's Drive from Cartagena to Folkestone We are now almost finished our trip with stays in Folkestone (Lesley's brother and family) and then Guildford (Anne and Graham/daughter and son in law). We set off from El Portus where we entertained Gerry and William from Devon and fellow members ofour Ringwood naturist club. We had popped in to see them on our way to Plymouth for the ferry in December. They had already booked a holiday in one of the cabins at El Portus for a month starting just as we would be leaving. We popped in to see a cycling friend who was on a cycling holiday based in Denia. They were having a lovely time cycling the coast and hills around. But then it was north and north again. The trip went without a ... read more

It's Epiphany Greetings to everyone. We are ensconced on a tight campsite at Torre del Mar called Almanat. The weather since Christmas Day has been lovely apart from a couple when it rained but we were moving on then. Today we think it went up to 21°C and we sat drinking at the bar on the beach. We didn't swim though as it is still cold water. We might try before we go if we dare. We have already cycled to Nerja in the east and tomorrow we shall go west to Malaga. It's a bank holiday for Epiphany. Another day we shall go inland north to a lake surrounded by mountains. Hope all is well with you. Michael and Lesley ... read more

Europe » Spain » Region of Murcia » Cartagena December 19th 2007

Stopped in El Portus We spent a very pleasant if cold time travelling down through Spain. Bilbao was a wonderful revelation with the Guggenheim at the junction of the river front and the old town. We stayed out on the coast at Sopelena and caught the metro in to the town. Further south we met a bit of drizzly snow and then rain popping in to Gernika, Zaragoza, Teruel and Almanza. We skirted Murcia and then down to Caragena which is about 10 km away. The weather is fine but now cloudy. It's 16°C at lunchtime. Unfortunately, there is huge hill out of the campsite and so we have not yet put the tandem together. So we do a bit of walking and listen to Radio 4 on the internet in the van. We have ... read more
