| 4th January 2009 Maureen | Mowgli - From: Sabah Discovery - The Coast Perhaps you should be aware that Mowgli was taken from Sepilok Orangutan Rehabiliation Centre. There he had a chance of being returned to the forest to live his life in the wild. Now he's just a zoo exhibit. The poor thing has had his life taken away to exist in conditions that are from ideal - another orangutan drowned there last year. |
| 20th November 2008 bruce | Royal Ascot - From: Merryn, Liz and Phil take on Royal Ascot I remember a coolish day there in September 1980, and walking back to Sunningdale to spend the night with a friend form Monash Uni (her sister has just published a book on Gough Whitalm). It was not Royal week, so it was the desperates & no hopers. Far more impressive were the footy matches i went ot - Arsenal beating Forest 1-0, and Everton 2-1 and Tottenham drawing 0-0 with Sunderland with pop Roson hitting hte cross bar in the last 15 mins for Sunderland and almoat winning the match. Most impressive ground wa the quant Hearts of Midlothian in Edinburgh who lost 0-2 to the rampaging Celtic (who I had seen in Aust play Red Star Belgrade in about 1978 in a 4 team com p with Arsenal and Aust (we were not much good then being swept aside in a World Cup group of 5 including Iran, Iraq, Kuwait and maybe Qatar or Indonesia). |
| 20th November 2008 bruce | Auckland contrast - From: Macau I can relate to the Auckland Tower glass panels. Not into the bungy myself, but go for it. Looks like a thriving construction zone like Shanghai or anywhere else in China. Small state & heaps of people, so lots of public transport? Did you get to the gee gees? How do they relate/complement the Honkers gallops? Close to the standard of one another? You in Melbourne yet? |
| 21st September 2008 Julia | Amazing - From: Macau Thanks Merryn for great pictures & comments - makes me want to give Hong Kong a second chance. I'm not sure if bungee jumping's my thing - it's all over too fast, would be great to hang glide from the top though. I'm just about to open the other pages. |
| 13th September 2008 Craig | Amazing pics - From: Four nights in Bangkok........ Jeepers Merryn, you took some amazing pics! Was a great holiday! |
| 3rd February 2008 mary | Hey - From: Sabah Discovery - The Coast Super to hear from you! On the road again I see. Photographs are terrific. I would so love to get up close and personal with an orangatan. I thought at one time of volunteering 3 months in borneo at an orang rescue group parenting baby orangs whose mother had been killed by poachers. The stories of bird-sized mosquitoes dampened by enthusiasm. Will email shortly to catch up. Two days from now we're having dinner with friends on their way to OZ, specifically to Perth. and then a train to sydney?! I certainly thought The Great Ocean Road(which they are NOT doing) would trump a train trip on the west coast - but what do I know. Best tip on Perth? More Later Hugs, Mary |

| 3rd November 2006 Honkie | - From: Bright lights, big city.....and plenty of sporting action Hi Merryn, Nice pics. I suppose you went to the public stand of the Sha Tin race track. Most aussie punters go to the members stand with nicer facilities.(hk$150 entrance fee) |
| 1st November 2006 hawi hordofa | loved you'r trip and have some question. - From: Standing on the roof of Africa Hi! how are u? I loved your blog, and I am doing a research on Mt.kilimanjaro. I was excited to see your pictures; i am really interested. If you have time, could you answer a few questions? 1. What was Kilimanjaro like? 2. Where did you travel from? 3. How long did you stay there? 4. What will you remember most? 5. What did you least like about you’re trip? 6. Was it worth it? (The trip) 7. Where did you stay? 8. What was the weather like? |
| 9th October 2006 meg | emshallah - From: 3 weeks in Egypt I think the reason there are so few car accidents is because everyone drives in the "god willing" fashion ... if someone is pushing in then they are meant to be there ... or something! I only saw one in a month in egypt - at some stupidly large roundabout in cairo with about 10 lanes of traffic rolled into about 4 lanes! Your pics of dahab take me back to the tough decisions to make each day about which particular beachside cafe to have lemon and sugar pancakes for brekkie at. played lots of backgammon there too! am still INSANELY jealous! sara's new bub (Zachary Francis) born today. mum and bub apparently doing well |
| 9th October 2006 Mary Dreger | Egypt - From: 3 weeks in Egypt I am EXHAUSTED just reading about your break-neck pace! Dive certification in 4 days??!!. Most take four weeks! Glad you got some R & R at a real house, probably even in a bed with running water! Photos are super! |
| 26th September 2006 Mae | Ain't no mountain high enough - From: Standing on the roof of Africa Merryn There ain't no mountain high enough Ain't no river wide enough to keep you from seeing the world... Congratulations on climbing Mt Kili!! Gongxi (Congratulations in Chinese) Am enjoying reading about your wonderful adventures!! A few months ago, I was offered a job that I really wanted at CSIRO, so I have postponed my travel plans for awhile (and perhaps indefinitely beyond holidays. But who knows, one day, some day...) Anyway, keep enjoying yourself and we will enjoy your experiences vicariously! Cheers Mae |
| 25th September 2006 Florida Bruce | Cool Beans....or was that ostrich to surrender by? - From: Standing on the roof of Africa The Derby was just cake and ice cream compared to this. This settles it..your the Queen Bee. Yearling (Hope) is home...take care and enjoying your adventure....except the toilet gods on the way...or was that toilet bushes there? |

| 28th August 2006 Phil |(fisky) | She lied about the stag - From: Bus to Chamonix and other stories..... Hi Merryn Hope you enjoy your trip up Kili and mind the rats and poo too much! The Stag proper is not for another 6 weeks so watch this space!! Read your blog on our trip to the alps and was slightly shocked if not hurt to see you had made several crucial omissions from the tale to enhance your role in the proceedings. I see you failed to mention Jez's single handed capture of the those burly street criminals, Martin falling asleep on the bass speaker of that rocking Night club we visited and Ged's uncanny resemblance of a sheep you once owned. And me being the only one to stay awake. ENjoy the rest of your trip and I shall look forward to more blogs x |
| 28th August 2006 Mary Dreger | Roman Holiday - From: The Italian Affair Part III - The Final Chapter Loved the Roman Holiday. That was my favorite movie when I was a little kid. And made audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck my favorites until I fell in love with Paul Newman years later. Thinking you skipped Venice? Is Santorini in your itinerary? I'm exhausted just reading about the Ferry! Keep Smiling |

| 14th August 2006 Martin Harley | Snowboarder - From: The Italian Affair Part II - My Roman Holiday Hey Merryn; glad you're doing fine in Rome. Looks fantastic. | 24th July 2006 Stalker | Drunk Category # 4 - From: Bus to Chamonix and other stories..... Stuff the G-rating. Can't believe you left off Skanky drunks which can be broken down into about 7 sub-categories, most of which are personal favoruties of mine and have pet names of the 7 dwarfs. |

| 11th July 2006 Stalker | Rubbing shoulders with the Upper Class - From: I'm in London still...... Not surprised at all to see you sucking up to Lord Coe. Thought you may have been trying to seduce him into taking the Bombers job after Sheedy is sacked at the end of the year. Would love to see Coe at Windy Hill addressing the boys before another loss "Tally ho chaps, can't you convicts kick straight" |
| 10th July 2006 David Debono | Hello - From: The South West adventure Hi Merryn, We hope you are well and it sounds like you have a great time. The pics and the descriptions have been fantastic. Take care. Cheers Dave & Lisa |

| 28th June 2006 mary dreger | WONDERFUL - From: Merryn, Liz and Phil take on Royal Ascot yo Merryn We're just back from a week in Las Vegas, followed by a week in Denver. Great to get your message and photo from London. There's a song in My Fair Lady about the Ascot - never know what it meant until now! It was THE PLACE to determine if Liza had learned enough of the British social graces to "pass" for royalty. I see why. |
| 25th June 2006 Randy Sinisi | Vicariously enjoying your travels - From: Merryn, Liz and Phil take on Royal Ascot A hot humid night in Cairo with a slow internet connection did not keep me from again vicariously enjoying your travels. I love seeing your sense of adventure and ability to drop into the local cuture - be it the wealthy race horse owners or the Spainish villagers. I am in Egypt to supervise stamping the American high school diplomas and meet with the Ministry of Education officials. I'll be home in Denver in time for the American 4th of July celebration and to think of Joe on his 5th of July birthday. Thank you for sharing your travel journal and pictures with us. |
| 25th June 2006 Dave | Swish - From: Merryn, Liz and Phil take on Royal Ascot Very swish sounding Merryn. I hope you got shattered and threw up on a prince's shoes, just to show them how a day at the races is done properly in Oz ... |
| 21st June 2006 Matty B | All Caught Up... - From: Aussie World Cup fever in Barcelona and much other stuff too...... Hey Mez, I have just caught up with your travels. | 9th June 2006 Mae | hello wandering traveller - From: Algeciras and Gibraltar Merryn Have been loving the vibrant photos (yes the new camera is doing the trick) and little anecdotes. I am glad that the trip has been as amazing as you were hoping. As my new job has been busy, I've barely made it to any Chinese classes since you left and so we probably will still know about the same amount of hanyu. The others are proudly keeping the flag flying though. Have lots more fun Mae |
| 9th June 2006 Greg Poynter | Bloody thieving tourist-animals - From: Algeciras and Gibraltar A racoon tried to steal a tourist's handbag while I was in a park too. Kinda ruins it a bit to know that they are that un-wild! |
| 9th June 2006 Meg | Gibraltar - From: Algeciras and Gibraltar I got lucky when I was there and met 2 NZ guys who were trying to buy a cannon for their home town (via Hull in UK) and got a guided tour of the battery from the Minster of the Interior (or other such title) including crawling around through tunnels - didn't have to pay anything, got chauffer driven etc. Went diving too, but Morrocco is MUCH more exciting and I figure you are off there next!!! |
| 27th May 2006 Ian | Politically incorrect - From: Hola from Granada & Cordoba Hey Merryn, Glad you having fun. The correct term is "Sex Workers" ..trust me! |
| 26th May 2006 Mary | Aussies in Paris - From: Cheers from Porto.... I sent you an email and forgot to mention that my friend and I got talking to an Aussie couple on the sidewalk on the Champs Elysees in Paris and discovered they grew up in Torquay! Now how small is this world? |
| 26th May 2006 Pam | Ooops, sorry... - From: Hola from Granada & Cordoba Ooops, sorry about the dodgy accommodation recommendation but we don't recall coming across any brothels when we were there - perhaps we were back at the Hostal before the "ladies of the night" came out to trade. I guess it proves that we always immerse ourselves in the local culture and hang out where the locals do whenever we travel! Might be a good idea if you ignore any other accommodation recommendations we've given you??? Cheers from the Sheers. |
| 23rd May 2006 Stalker | Wot no skanks?? - From: Bom dia from Lisbon & Sintra Merryn, you disappoint me. "Custard tarts" was promising, but alas not what I expected. Surely there is Euroskank to report back on? |
| 22nd May 2006 Barbara | Good photos - From: Bom dia from Lisbon & Sintra Seeing your pictures, especially the Monument of Discoveries certainly brought back memories of our trip to Portugal. When we were viewing the Monument, we also saw a preschool class on a field trip. "They were all in uniforms sitting in a circle eating their lunches. Little children are always a delight. And these didn't get in the way of our photos! |

| 21st May 2006 Heather and Bernie | Ah Madrid! - From: One day in Madrid Loved Madrid too. The Prado was a high light and must if you get time. We have a Velazquez (don't forget to make your z's sound like s's) which takes pride on our walls it's the Royal family portrait. They do this excellent thing of making a print actually look like an oil painting. Enjoying the blogs. Wow what a trip of life time! |
| 19th May 2006 Geo & Barb Beury | Good wishes - From: One day in Madrid Merryn, Seems you are having a wonderful time. We're sure the Prado was on your Madrid to do list. The "black Goyas" are spectacular. Best wishes for you conntinued travels. |

I get picked at EVERY airport for drug/explosives checks and they tell me it's random! I think it has to do with carrying a back pack. if you just had a handbag, they'd leave you alone. I flew to Perth the other day and ducked back through security to go to the chemist and then got randomly selected a second time on my way back through :) |
