8:15 (Tanzania Time, 1:15 am EST)- Leave Springland Hotel in Moshi for Arusha Airport 11:06 (TT; 4:06 am EST)- arrive at Arusha Airport I get there to check in and they don't have me on the manifest. I asked if I could use their Internet to show them my confirmation because they keep saying "Did you pay?" I printed out my payment confirmation and my bank statement to show it had been deducted from my account. The dude kept saying that he had to talk to Rashida (my booking agents). I kept asking what that would do if there were no spots on any of the flights and could he start looking for another way to get me to Dar in time, but he kept being like I can't unless I know you paid. This was ... read more

So we got up bright and early and had a quick, small breakfast and started our trek down. The guide said it would have been about 4 hours and we did it in 2. I was hauling ass. I was extremely motivated to get the hell of that rock. Thankfully I wasn't hurting very much from yesterday. We had a bigger breakfast once we got down to the camp then left for the rest of the descent. We took a slightly different route then the one up, so it took longer than I expected about 3.5 hours...but its over!!! I made it down and they even gave me a certificate of completion. We had about a 2 hour drive back to the hotel where we washed our clothes and relaxed. We had dinner and I had ... read more

aka worst day of my life... Not an exaggeration. I choose root canals over today. So we had breakfast consisting of 1 minimuffin at 1230 am and got started at 1 am. We started out all layered up, but quickly got wet and sweaty, so we shedded layers quickly. Did I mention its pitch black at 1 am? Whoever thought mountain climbing in the dark was a good idea was an effing moron. (PS the reason they do that is so that you get to the summit in time to see the sunrise over Kili). Already I'm not having the greatest time. But then we emerge from forest area into the rocky part of the mountains. Holy freezing. So now we're soaking wet and its windy as all shit. So we pile the layers back on. ... read more

I'm writing this on the 14th and I don't remember much because of all the goings on today. I do remember the 2nd day being much harder than the first, but I survived relatively unscathed. They've got their brochure all screwy. They say the first day is 4-6 hours and we did it in 3, they say the 2nd day is 3-5 hours and it took us 7. Lame. At the start of the hike some giraffes crossed right in front of us. Even after all the work we did with giraffes and how many we saw in Ruaha, having them come so close still makes my jaw drop. The beginning was all rainforest in the clouds. When we finally got about the clouds we got our first siting of Kili above the world. Nothing compares. ... read more

I am sitting in the dining hall of the Miriakamba Camp looking down on the clouds, 2500 meters up the mountain. I made it through day 1 and I don't feel so bad! We rented the gear we needed, met with our guide and loaded up on a bus for the 2 hour ride to Meru. There were 4 others on the bus with us from Germany. They are doing it in 3 days, then Kili. By the time we got to Arusha National Park it was almost lunchtime, we drove for about an hour to the starting point and had lunch. Then we were on our way! We have a crew of 8 people just to get us up this mountain which was a bit intimidating: 2 porters for each of us (4 total) to ... read more

The taxi from yesterday picked us up early this morning to take us to the airport. When he got there he had a random bag of clothes and not my Gore-tex jacket and pants. We drove back to the hotel to talk to them and figure out what was going on. Basically, they had no information for me, so we returned the clothes and got ahold of Deana. She told us that they found them when they got to Dar es Saalam. They didn't know what else to do, so they sent then with Jocelyn. I'm glad I didn't lose them completely, but its incredibly frustrating because so many people knew they were there and that I needed them. Amelie and I had a conversation about them the night before because they were in her room. ... read more

We had arranged for a taxi to take us up to Nungwi bright and early. I packed up my stuff and jumped in bed with Marcella and Thalita and said a very sad good-bye to my roommates of the past 5 weeks. I know they will be lifelong friends. And Marcella is going to be my sister-in-law since I'm marrying her brother (in a castle) after all. Gill and Jon came down to see us off and we got in the taxi and left. Halfway there I realized I had forgotten my Gore-tex gear in the medical kit. We called Harrison to have him have someone leave them at the front desk of the hotel and the taxi driver offered to pick them up on his way to get us in the morning. Crisis averted. We ... read more

Another amazing day. One that will probably change me forever. It makes me emotional just thinking about what to write. We went snorkeling in the morning. It took us a while to get organized, but we eventually made it on the dhows (we took 2). Val had everyone who hadn't gone before get in the boat with me and asked me to give them a tutorial on what to do and what to expect. So I did that and they were awesome. They followed instructions and asked questions. Once Lia got in the water she was having issues with gear and was really scared. It took me a few minutes to get her squared away...I had to put her fins on her, then he snorkel was broken so I had to switch mine and hers, then ... read more

Holy Zanzibar...I'm in love! We traveled to the east coast and visited a sustainable seaweed farm. The women grow seaweed and sell it for use in a great variety of products like soaps and ice cream. Where they do this is without doubt the most amazingly beautiful beach I have ever seen. Again, with the no words or picture could possibly do it justice. The blue of the water...the softness of the sand...and you can wade out at least a kilometer. Amazing. From there we had lunch at a place with tables in the sand. Cute. Next, we went to a National Park. We took a hike through the woods and saw some monkeys. Then a second area of the park where a troop of native red colobus monkeys lives. They were basically right on top ... read more

In the morning we had a couple of lectures on water pollution and some marine mammal stuff. The most interesting thing I learned was about the coelocanth. It was thought to be extinct since the 1930s, but it was recently rediscovered. 3 or 4 have been seen in the wild and they are just now getting population studies done. Pretty cool. After that, we had a few hours of free time- shopping! I bought lots of stuff...3 amazing paintings, scarves, lots of spices, Christmas ornaments, masks to hang...that might be it, but I feel like I'm forgetting some stuff. Oh ya! and an amazingly beautiful photo album with wood carved elephants on the front. For dinner, we went to Mercury's. It's owned by Kiss's lead singer Fred Mercury and is now run by his family. Cool ... read more
