Happy Birthday, Lydia! Lydia is 11 this month.Lydias Gallery | Lydias Gallery is a website I made, to display my 9 year old daughters drawings, paintings... It is a homemade Christmas present for her grandparents, so they can keep up to date with Lydias latest artwork. They live in a different country to us, so don't often get to see what Lydia makes. | | | | |

Mel The tourist cafe here produces some vegetarian versions of Indonesian food, so I am having that tonight. Lydia is getting a pizza which they also produce there. We bought an assortment of Indonesian snacks after sun down last night for today, because there would be no way to get them anytime before 4PM today, and we wouldn't want to have a junkfood deprived Sunday. Mel There are a number of dens of inequity(AKA tourist cafes) in the town. When me and Lydia walk past them, the owners greet us enthusiasticly. They recognise us as potential customers, by the absense of headscarfs and our foreigness. These dens of inequity are just about tolerated by the locals, so long as it is all kept out of sight. Well, that is the case most of the time. In ... read more
Mel The coffee here is delicious. It only costs 30 cents(3000 Rupiah, which means the hundreds and thousands of rupiahs I have stuffed in my purse will last nicely) per cup. If you want milk to put in it, the milk costs 4000 Rupiahs, which makes the cost of the coffee more than double. Ridiculous amounts of sugar come with it for free though. They add it to the coffee, presuming everybody will want it. Sometimes, they understand when I ask them not to include it. Hello This morning, we were at what is probably the worlds most exotic cafe, and managed to score you 50g of that poo coffee you announced ( ) on the TravelBlog forums you would try, if somebody brings you some. We went directly to the producer, to avoid the many ... read more
Mel We are staying in an old colonial house, once owned by the Dutch(I presume). We have a lovely double room with bathroom, for just 7 Euros per night. I got a bad impression of Sumatra yesterday, when first person we met was a tout we fell foul to, and I am relieved and glad that such an experience is turning out to be not the usual. As far as I know, the bus ticket he sold us was OK, but we did pay 6 times what we should have for lunch at a very shabby restaurant. I wouldn't have bothered with eating there, if I knew that the prices didn't match the surroundings. Lydia liked the food there, so I suppose it can be considered an over priced treat for her. I gave the tout ... read more
Mel At last, we are in Sumatra, where I have been looking forward to being for around a year. It is absolutely lovely here in the Bukittinggi in the mountains. The bus journey: We got here in one piece, appart from a bruise on my shoulder. The bus ride was extremely bumpy and the driver swerved and swung in any possible attempt to overtake just about anything in front of him. And, if something approached from the other direction, during the overtake atempt, he would swing wildly back behind the vehicle he tried to over take. Sometimes he just missed crashing head on, by a couple of seconds. At least' there were no break downs. One of the engines of the boat failed, on the way over the strait, and there were a number of causalty ... read more
Mel I ran out of internet time yesterday, so here is the continuation of our getting here. The tampon situation: It is when the customs find things like tampons, contraceptive pills... In some countries these things don't actually exist, or are very rare, and in those countries the customs and security are almost always men. In Indonesia there were a few women there, but they only seemed to take a very minor role in the security checking, as if their hiring really is tokenism. I really would expect to have done a crime or be highly suspicious in some way, before going through the interrogation that the 3 male customs officers brought all foreigners into a room to go through. At least we were herded in, rather than having to be in there individually with those ... read more
Mel We are in Melaka, which is lovely, and the guesthouse is the type of place we are tempted to stay in for the entire trip, but won't. We will come back here though, on the way back from Sumatra and look forward to it. I think, there is an agent here who can sell us the ticket to and get us the visa for Sumatra. That is handy, because it will mean less immigration BS when we get there. The music in this guesthouse is far better than what we have been forced(because I don't think Asian TVs, stereos... have volume options below the loudest few, or so it seems) to listen to. :) When are you going back to Munich? Dirk Jan I'll be going back on friday. I arrive in Bangkok on the ... read more
Mel We are now in Kuala Lumpur. Lydia started puking this morning, and puked into plastic bags a number of times during the bus journey. I hope she is well by tomorrow, because rollercoasters and puking don't go well together. We are meeting tomorrow at the rollercoasters, in the Times Square shopping center, to have lunch while Lydia goes on the rollercoasters, or insists that is way more exciting than the rollercoasters and has lunch with us instead. Lydia lost and found Mel Yesterday, was one scary experience. Lydia was playing on the roller coasters in the Times Square shopping center for ages. I thought nothing of it, because she loves them, until the lights were being switched off and customers being thrown out. I stood there for around 10 minutes longer, waiting and ... read more
Dirk Jan I will go to the Netherlands tomorrow morning (night trains all booked out already) Of course I'll also have email when I'm over there, so if you need anything booked, I can still do that (pending being offline when travelling of course). Mel We are in Hat Yai, in the Cathay Guesthouse. There is a ladyboy sitting in the corner of this room, like a guardian of the book swap. I should be able to get all the good books, because most of the other guests are western guys, who are giving the ladyboy a wide berth. Lucky (s)he isn't in the internet corner. That would really hinder the other guests. Today we bought lunch in the market, and hung around at a really nice cafe beside it. We will go there together, when ... read more
Mel Hopefully, the guesthouse rooms won't be as ridiculously hard to get when you get here. But here are some tips. The cheapest you can get is a single fan room with shared bathroom. Try to get one in the following guesthouses, in the order listed below, because that is also the order of best value. If you are arriving early in the morning, and you can't get what you want, ask them to keep the first one that becomes available. If none becomes available, then just take the best value one they can offer. All these guesthouses are on the same street as the Gecko bar and are beside each other. Most/all on the rest of the street are more expensive. The order: The Merry V Guesthouse The Green Guesthouse(it now has a sign outside ... read more
Mel I'm glad I brought the umbrella because of how rainy Kuala Lumpur was last August. Torrential rain has been comming down here in Bangkok, ever since we arrived. Strangely, it didn't make finding a guesthouse room easy. Looks like Bangkok is teaming with budget backpackers, despite the rainy season. Rainy season usually doesn't live up to expectations, but it is this year, and I bet the backpackers huddled everywhere wish they had my umbrella so they could get out of the cafes and bars. Bangkok is one place one would not expect to need an umbrella. All other times, the rain was mostly at night, with an occasional short lived daytime downpore. We did get a nice room though at a good price, because we hung around waiting for people to check out, rather than ... read more
