Invergarry Still I got up and straightened up the room so I could take a photo of how nice it was. I’m such a weirdo! We went down to breakfast and while we were eating the manager brought down our luggage - woo hoo! He even helped me put it in the car while mom paid for our sandwiches from yesterday. I really liked this hotel and wouldn’t mind staying here several days to explore the area. The room was gorgeous and big and so was the bathroom. The staff was super nice and friendly as well. Urquhart Castle We were on the A82 road by 9am and got to Drumnadrochit and Urquhart Castle on Loch Ness by 9:30. There was a tour bus waiting already for the 9:30 opening time. It was so windy and ... read more

Erbusaig and Plockton Slept in a bit today - yay! We had breakfast at the Tingle Creek Hotel as it was included in the rate. I had Scotch pancakes, they were yummy but a bit sweet and the ‘maple’ syrup was more like honey than traditional maple syrup. I met a cute and talkative black kitty in the hotel parking lot when we were leaving. We headed north up the coast from Erbusaig to village of Plockton. The picturesque village is at the seaward end of Loch Carron. This small loch side hamlet is an idyllic place. A row of neatly painted cottages hugs the shoreline following the curve of the tiny harbor. Palm trees line the main street and the whole picture is framed by a craggy landscape of heather and pine. Plockton is also ... read more

Isle of Skye The tour bus from the hotel is on our ferry this morning so as it turns out the hotel is serving breakfast early. We grab a quick bite and drive the short distance to the ferry terminal and get in line. This ferry is much smaller than the one we took to Mull and it has an open car deck. The crossing from Mallaig to Skye is only 30 minutes, but I think we made it a bit quicker than that. Armadale Castle We get to Armadale, Skye around 8:35 - and the first place we are going to is Armadale Castle Gardens and the Museum of the Isles. The castle was abandoned by the Macdonald family in 1925 (they moved to a smaller house). Armadale Castle Gardens and Museum of the Isles ... read more

North from Oban to Mallaig Figures - mom was up before the 7:30am alarm today - the one day that I wanted to sleep in a bit. Plus a tour bus must have been leaving around 6:30 am because doors were slamming up and down the hallway. It was too noisy to sleep anymore, so I’m really tired again. I think I wore the arm brace only about 4 hours. The thing makes my arm ache in a nauseating way. Stinks! We had some breakfast at the hotel before we left. I tried the sausages and boy they were super spicy hot! After that I decided to just stick to the scrambled eggs, potato scones and toast. Castle Stalker We headed north out of Oban up the A828 which is a pretty good road, curvy, but ... read more

Ferry to Mull I set the alarm on the mobile phone for 6am so we would have time to eat and make it to the ferry by 7:40am which is the time mom said is the latest to check in for the ferry with the car. We headed down to the lobby right before 7am (7am is when they open for breakfast) to try to grab a quick breakfast before we left for the ferry. We asked our server how to get to the where you load the cars onto the ferry. So mom pulls out the tickets and discovers that the latest check in is 7:15am and it’s now 7:10am! D@mn!!!! We grab our things and race out to make an attempt to get to the ferry in time. The server actually showed mom on ... read more

Via Loch Lomond toward Oban We woke up to absolutely pouring rain! We decided to just grab a quick continental breakfast at the HIE, I had Frosties and yogurt. I had gotten some advice on our plans for today from the desk clerk; he used to be a coach driver and was really nice and helpful. He said the drive to Oban should take about 3 hours. The plan was to drive along Loch Lomond stopping to enjoy the beauty of the Loch, but it was raining way too hard for that. We also were going to stop at Lochawe and see Kilchurn Castle. We did end up stopping at a rest area on Loch Lomond, but there was no visibility at all. The GPS couldn’t find Kilchurn so we thought we could drive to the ... read more

Drumlanrig Castle Yup - so much for going to sleep at a decent time, I read until 3am - such a dumbass. I’m really tired this morning with only 5 hours of sleep. We got ready and went down to breakfast at the hotel. The bread was delicious, but the bacon was super salty and the scrambled eggs were good too. This morning we are heading to Drumlanrig Castle, which is only about 10-15 minutes ups the street from Trigony House. The castle didn’t open until 11am, so we took our time at breakfast and getting there. We were still about 15 minutes early. There was a mountain bike race event there which looked to be cross country and it was raining fairly steadily so the riders were all caked in mud. It seems like the ... read more

Moffat Wake up call at 8am! I had another restless night; I think I only kept the brace on for about 2 hours. My arm ached something fierce. I really wish I could get a good nights rest. We had breakfast at Burt’s Hotel again and it was good but not really filling. Apparently the trick was to order scrambled eggs, not fried. One fried egg is what I got and mom had at least 3 scrambled. We literally dragged 1 big, heavy bag each down to the car before breakfast. Then we managed all of the rest in one trip. I carried one of mom’s bags with mine. Mom hit the ATM and the post office again and we headed off to Moffat intending to stop at the Grey Mare’s Tail Waterfall on A708. The ... read more

Melrose & Melrose Abbey I woke mom up around 8:00am and we went down for breakfast at the hotel about 9:00, almost all of the places we’re staying at have breakfast included in the room rate, which is very cool. I had a fried egg, bacon and a potato scone. Not bad, but the potato scone is a little weird. Mom wanted to buy some stamps to mail postcards. She got directions from the hotel to the post office, but couldn’t remember where to cut through to the next street over, so we walked all the way around the block. Stopped at a little store and bought some water, then we got in the car and programmed Melrose Abbey into the GPS. Okay - it turned out that Melrose Abbey was only about 100yds from the ... read more

Dublin Airport Layover and Glasgow We had a four hour layover in Dublin. We were a bit clueless, but apparently we cleared passport control for the UK/EU there in Ireland. Thinking that it would be a good idea to find our gate first, we headed off. Of course the gate was just about as far away from the main terminal area as possible. We got all the way down there to discover that there really wasn’t any hot food to buy. All the restaurants were back by passport control, which was about a 15-20 minute walk back the way we had just come. Oh well - we ended up with apple turnovers, they weren’t bad, but they weren’t filling at all. After this we still had two and a half hours to wait for our flight ... read more
