For the first time since I left home, I‘ve really missed San Francisco. From our 4:30AM start, today has been marked by a mix of high emotion and chaos. On our flight to Marrakesh, we were the only two women of child-bearing age who did not have a flock of shrieking young children in tow. We kissed the concept of a line (as in queue, not geometry) goodbye once we reached our gate and were herded onto the Easyjet plane. Once on board, I got little much needed sleep as the children continued to screech and added running up and down [View Full Entry]

Dirty Old Greek Man Europe » Greece » Crete » Heraklion
An exchange I had with a dirty old Greek man while walking up 25Augustus Way: Dirty Old Greek Man: How are you? Me: Good. Dirty Old Greek Man: Do you speak English? Me: No implied by shaking head Dirty Old Greek Man: You from Japan? Me: Dirty Old Greek Man, you ignorant slut. I just told you I don’t speak English, how the fuck am I supposed to comprehend/answer that? Or at least that’s what went through my head, as I maintained silence and turned off the street we’d shared until then. End of dialogue. [View Full Entry]

Today is our last in Greece and the first slow day since my last entry. We got into Fira and checked into Santorini Camping with a very sweet Texan couple we met while waiting to disembark the ferry. We were pleased to discover that the shack we were expecting was actually a charming cabin, complete with our own private bath, safe, balcony, AC, and cable TV! All this for little more than we paid for the cardboard box on Mykonos. Greece is great. We spent the evening wandering the hilly labyrinth of tourist shops and restaurants and caught some gorgeous night [View Full Entry]

I’m sitting in one of the dining cabins of the multi-storied ferry to Santorini. The ride will take 3 hours so I’ll be taking full advantage of the air conditioning! Today is hot, bordering on stifling. I went for a run along the beach this morning about 2 hours too late, because at 9:00 the heat was already too intense for physical exertion. Steph sleeps more than anyone I know, save my sister Allyson, and naps throughout the day as well! It works out well though because while I’m up late writing, reading, or loading pictures, and when I’m up early [View Full Entry]

Naxos Europe » Greece » South Aegean » Naxos
I didn’t think we’d make our 10:00 ferry to Paros (our stopover before Naxos), since our driver had a couple of friends in tow with different destinations, we left late, and they stopped to inspect a discarded washing machine on the side of the road enroute. We made it in plenty of time, however, and were even greeted by the same suicidal looking attendant from our ferry 3 days prior. It’s a small Greek world after all! George, our host at Windmill Naxos, gave us a warm greeting at the port before taking us to his mother-son operated pension about a [View Full Entry]

A miracle/unsolved mystery greeted me this morning: the absolute absence of a hangover or any of its sidekick symptoms! This, considering I mixed about 37 different types of cheap alcohol the night prior and that I’ve been hungover off a thimble of wine, I found quite astonishing. Today was spent much like yesterday, only we capped it off with a walk past Paranga Beach to the Western-most stretch on our side of the island to watch the sunset. It didn’t set until close to 9:00 and the skies were without a cloud. The one thing missing? A bottle of red… [View Full Entry]

I kicked today off with a serene morning run along the coast from Paradise to Paranga Beach. There were few souls stirring at the early hour of 8, aside from a few dozen lizards scurrying along. When I got back the staff were just starting to set up the beach chairs and a few early risers were having their seaside breakfasts. Paradise Beach has coarse, almost rocky sand and is speckled with trees that provide much appreciated patches of shade. The water is clear and stretches out in layers of different shades of blue and turquoise. There’s a reef about 30 [View Full Entry]

I woke up early to hit the Acropolis before the crowds and since Sundays gain free admittance, according to Lonely Planet. Well, since 12euro is hardly free, I skipped the Acropolis and killed my morning in Athens walking around it, sipping an exceedingly dear cappuccino (3.80!), and talking to travel agents about ferry options to lay out the afternoon’s game plan. It was hot as all fuck without a single breeze of respite. Originally, the plan was to spend the night in Nafplio on the Peloponnese, about a 2.5 hour bus ride from the main bus station in Athens. After doing [View Full Entry]
