I am originally from New Zealand, and have traveled alot in Middle East and Asia. I work as an artist and often in the locations I choose to settle in for a period. I am about to travel in two weeks time to Cambodia for the first time and onwards to South India, where I have not been since I had a bad accident there thirteen years ago. I am both excited and apprehensive about this trip.

Running Amok

The national dish in this country is called "Amok", and it is a yummy fish curry made with coconut juice and vegetables, and is sometimes served in a banana leaf or in a coconut, as you see in the photo. Amok is easy to love and as a result of eating too much of it, I am also "running amok". Nothing unusual in that you might conclude insightfully. Another dish I unsuspectingly discovered is duck egg, whereby I thought I was going to eat a nice normal yellow egg, with a salad. The shell was too tough for starters, and I began to have doubts about what lay within. Some helpful locals sharing the same table assisted me and showed me what to do, emptying the grey and white slimy fetus onto a saucer, while my ... read more

In the last few days I have just returned from a sojourn to southern Laos, and after hiding in my room during this time I am ready for some timely blogging. Anyway despite the ever increasing Laos tourist rip-offs and the notorious border scams, it was wonderful to be in such beautiful rural zones that were so clean and unpolluted, and the best and last find, the nearly car-less island of Don Khong in Si Phan Don. For me and my cycling habits this was great, no worries and high speeds, as I take in great scenery and pristine environment. The locals seemed fascinated with my gear and general presentation, half super high-tech and half bumpkin like them. I mostly had nice interactions and frequent greetings on the road, with the exception of some kids in ... read more

A sultry Sunday here in Siem Reap, after a night of debauchery and jokes with some Australian friends, and jaded references to marketing " monk tours incorporated"" for bored middle aged Western woman, not to mention our requests for large banana salads. Our poor hapless young waiter kept cracking up; - his English was much better than I had initially assumed, unfortunately. Anyway back to temples, forget the monks, Deb, for a moment. A few days ago I discovered Preah Khan, which appears to have been more than a temple, and was once a Buddhist university, as well as a considerable city. References to a "lake of blood" indicate that Preah Khan was built on the site of a major battle in the recapture of Angkor from the Chams, and the Cham king died here. ... read more

I am a bit tired of sweating today, so I am not spending so much times on my bike in the great outdoors, in the tropical sun and temperatures between35 and 40 degrees Celsius. And I need to tell you what I wear to keep the sun off my pale sun-prone skin! Double layers of black long sleeved cotton, long loose cotton trousers, safari cap with sides, black veil over that, and gloves and sunglasses. I carry a lot of water, some worn on my body, and more in my backpack, and basket of the crappy bike. Even then too many hours out there can cause a headache, even if one is constantly rehydrating. Yesterday I noticed that the skin on my inner thighs was chafing by the end of the day, so badly that I ... read more

Yesterday, not quite in the middle of a temple tour, at 11am, I aborted the mission and instructed my driver to return to the hotel, and I happily reentered the cool precincts of my hotel room at the family run Bou Savy. I am tired of touts, hustlers, con-men, con-woman and yes even little versions called con- children. I have had numerous faces, and their wares, appear in both sides of my tuk tuk, and they just don't desist;- they do not allow me to even move, bailed in - yes tuk tuk cornered. They rudely talk over my driver, even when he is explaining something about the temples and their history. I have been cornered coming out from the toilets, and had people leap out of bushes to start a sales pitch after stalking me ... read more

Yesterday was my first Angkor Wat out and about tour experience, with me and a highly talkative tuk tuk driver, who although he was out to please me, he just also happened to irritate me quite a lot. For $3 extra he urged that we went 50km away to Kbal Spean, the river of 1000 Lingas;- a linga being the dick of the Indian god Shiva. So it is kind of like Dick River in the jungle. My Australian friend who actually hires this guy as her full- time driver had assured me that he was harmless. Nonetheless he spent the next two hours ranting that he was not married because he was too poor (I think that was the gist of it). Anyway since I was not married either, he thought that I should stay ... read more

I had a smooth journey over here with good flights and a night in the Arrivals hall of Changi Airport in Singapore. I had a rather decadent time on Singapore Airlines between ChCh and Singapore, eating lots of lovely food and drinks. A woman from KL who is Christian was seated beside me, which seems to be a recurring theme at the moment as I had dinner last night with a team of missionaries, which was fine until one of them decided that I needed to be saved by the Lord. Then there was a group prayer in which I found myself to be one of the main subjects of the session. All of them were Asian from different countries, and I was informed that India was indeed a very Evil place (my next destination). I ... read more

Last Tuesday family and close friends, and a young girl called Phoebe, who is convinced that she is a dog, headed out to an all you can eat joint called Great Taste. For NZ $11 you can eat yourself silly and children are free. The cuisine is wide ranging and pretty yummy, but over-eating can be an issue (for me anyway). Now I am racing around packing my gear for my South East Asian stint. I hate this laast minute hysteria and so forth..... Anyway the last of the great cold Dunedin weather and the shedding of my many layered outfits.... read more

Last week the sky opened and it hosed down, then drizzeled, then hosed down again for days on end. The normally tame Leith, a genteel river that trickles through the northern town, gardens and university, turned into a raging white water torrent, much to my glee. The students also were delighted and got sporting enough to go kayaking and boogie board surfing down it, despite a police warning and then ban. I awoke early one morning and took these shots at dawn, trying to balance my umbrella at the same time, and finally arrived at my destination somewhat sodden. Only two weeks exactly until I fly away to another distant land... very different to this one. ... read more

This trip has been so well planned .... why do I feel this pressure on me two weeks prior to departure? Dunedin in New Zealand is cold and wet, (in fact its raining all the time) and going outside means getting a chilled drenching. I have only two weeks to finish my business here and get my "gear" packed - and there seems to be too much of it at the moment. I don't really want my pack to weigh in at more that 15 or 16 kg, and I also want to haul in some art gear so that I can work on location to some degree at Siem Reap in Cambodia. Emerging from the dull dank depths of sleepy New Zealand life is going to be great, especially since it feels like I have ... read more
