Matt and Sung's Excellent Adventure!!!
The Friday Night Liquor Cult Goes Global! DJ Gibbyabreak is getting married in Santorini, Greece on Wednesday June 8th and two correspondents from Seattle's degenerate Bar Fly community will be tagging along to bring you live coverage of this monumental event. Along the way we'll spread the gospel according to Mark... (Maker's Mark) while sampling local delicacies like Heineken in Amsterdam, Ouzo from Athens, Absinthe from Prague and whatever it is those crazy Hungarians drink in Budapest... :)
Check back often as I'll be updating everyone on our Bar Trek as often as I find 15 minutes of Sobriety and a keyboard that types in English!

Ever had one of those days when accomplishing even the smallest of tasks feels like trying to write Mandarin Chinese upside down while riding a drunk elephant? Yeah me neither but let’s just say today approached that level of frustration. We left our village of Imerovigli for the bright lights of Fira, the biggest little (only) town in Santorini. Fira offers lots of tourists, few cabs, street hawkers moving people into restaurants (even in Greece there’s slimy recruiters) and gift shops that make you scratch your head (do you really want to ship fresh wool pelts and feta balls back to the states?). The place is pretty much what I expected of a resort town dedicated to making middle-aged couples overpay for trinkets they’ll throw in the junk drawer as soon as they get back to

I'm sorry, I was in a very parenthetical mood while I was in Santorini, I guess 80-degree weather, no place to be and a steady salt-water breeze caused my internal monologue to kick up a notch... Apologies if it annoys you.(unless it annoys Balz, then I'm happy about it) A scenic and uneventful (Just the kind I like) 45 minute flight delivered us from Athens to the picturesque island of Santorini. ( I thought about making a Great Santini joke here but Robert Duvall isn't as big as he used to be) Our Hotel, The Eltheon turned out to be a really nice looking Villa complex with a beer commercial quality (but frigid) pool and several 1 bedroom apartment units. Very "rustic" to be sure, there

If you told me we had knocked back draino shots last night I’d be hard pressed to argue. Unfortunately for me (and even more so for Sung) this was our only day to do any sightseeing in Athens so I was not going to let a hangover, sleep depravation or beer separation anxiety hinder my getting cultured. The funny thing about those “higher end” hangovers though is that the motivation gene stops working. I didn’t even roll out of the hotel until 3:30 and roll is putting it mildly. With Sung pulling up lame entirely (and yes, he had less liquor than me) it was a

I don't mean Jennifer Grey Dirty, or Tonya from Real World/Road Rules Challenge Dirty; I mean more like Manhattan dumpster diving on a muggy summer afternoon Dirty. With that kind of lead in, it was almost inevitable that we would land in Athens on day 5 of a trash workers strike... Yummy... Several times during our (way to brief) 2-day stay, we'd be enjoying a cocktail when the shifting winds would treat us to a nice blast of moldy pita and soggy toilet paper. Honestly though, the smell was about the only complaint I had about Athens. Flush with the pride of hosting an unexpectedly successful Olympic Games, the city was friendly

Heineken Brewery Tour After prefunking at another bier cafe (I loved that we prefunked on our way to a brewery tour) we headed with John and Jill to the Heineken factory for a self guided tour and the grand pay off: According to Sung, we'd have 1 hour to drink all the Heineken we could consume. Oh joy of joys! The tour itself was rather underwhelming. Basically if you've seen the intro to Laverne and Shirley you've seen most of the tour... add a few stale beer making exhibits plus some skunky smelling furniture and

Check out the Hot Carl Tosti Hello all, Apologies for the sporadic updates but finding internet access over here is tough, especially if you don't seem to wake up before 2 pm. I guess I just have not been able to get over the whole jet lag thing. Yeah that's it. Also apologies for no pictures as of yet but I can't seem to find a terminal that will let me upload photos. As soon as I can though I will add the pics that go with these posts. So continuing from last post, after we checked into our closet (a theme we will get more accustomed to as the trip goes on) we went for some breakfast and coffee at Cafe Lechinstein. There we sat outside drinking cappuccinos like proper Eurotrash and

Most of our fears surrounding a 9 hour 40 minute flight were realized early on in the flight from Seattle to Amsterdam. Here's a few choice snippets from the running diary I kept. 11:01 AM Matt and Sung hit the Cascades bar in the SeaTac Airport for Embarkment elixir and plan our conquest of Europe. 1:00 PM We take off. Succesfully. 2:00 PM Sung ingests his 3rd piece of nicorete gum, he's exhuasted all his reading material and the shakes ensue. 3:35 PM Roughly 4 hours and 3 beers into the flight, Jill dishes out the ambian like brownies at a bake sale. 6:00 PM Sung is engrossed by Wimbledon, the Kristen Dunst lead steaming pile of celluloid. 7:00 PM

The thing that keeps hammering in my mind though is 9 hours 40 minutes. What the hell are we going to do for that long? Sung's cool and all but I don't think I could talk to George Lucas for 9 hours 40 minutes. Which I thought was an interesting question, if you had to talk to 1 person for 9 hours straight who would it be? We head to Amsterdam first, arriving at 7AM tomorrow morning and despite my suggestion we head straight to the Heineken factory, Sung wants to check into our hotel first like every other ugly American tourist group before hitting the slopes (typical). Here's where we are staying: NH
