South Island We arrived in Picton on the Interislander Ferry. Picton is at the top of the South Island and is a small town sandwiched between the hills and the deeply placid waters of Queen Charlotte Sound. We picked up our new car and after a few days stay in Picton exploring the town, we headed west through the hills to Nelson. Nelson is a lovely seaside resort with a warm sunny climate. It was a very pleasant town so we stopped here for a week as we had found a very nice and quite cheap holiday park to stay at so we relaxed on the beach and took in the sites of the town. We saw Jens Hansen Jewellers where the “One Ring to Rule Them All” was made from Lord of the Rings, we ... read more

New Zealand Right, a couple of things to note before we get started on this stage of our journey We have decided to split the New Zealand blog into two sections, one for each island. The reason for this (as you will soon come to see) is that we took SOOOOO many pictures and have written so much and they tend to go on and on so we thought you may need a break in between islands to go make a cuppa. You will see that one of the first pictures on each blog is a map of the Island in question (North and South) which we pulled off the internet and very badly drew over it so as to try and show you the route that we took around the Island. Please try and keep ... read more

Australia We had allocated 3 months for 'down under' and the plan was to spend a couple of weeks in each city starting in Adelaide and working our way up the east coast and finish in Darwin. We decided (unlike New Zealand) that hiring a car or campervan wouldn't really work out well for us in terms of cost and it would mean too much driving so we opted to train, bus and fly from place to place. Flying worked out to be an excellent decision as the domestic flights in Australia are dirt cheap (Jet Star Airline puts Easy Jet to shame) and instead of a 12 hour bus journey in the wicked hot heat we were able to fly from place to place in cool comfort all in a couple of hours. Unlike the ... read more

It's Fiji time!! During our three and a half weeks in Fiji this was a saying which we came to use on a daily basis. Life in Fiji runs on Fiji time! Things happen when they happen, no rush, no worries! Our flight from Los Angeles to Nadi, Fiji took around 10½ hours and due to the international time zones we lost a day flying. We left Los Angeles on Thursday 10 September and arrived in Fiji on Saturday 12 September so we had no 11 September this year! Our plan for Fiji was to spend a few nights on the mainland and then head off to the Yasawa Islands which is a chain of islands running up the west side of Fiji, traveling from island to island via the Yasawa Flyer. The Yasawa Flyer is ... read more

Climbing aboard the Greyhound bus in San Diego we settled into our seat pleased in the knowledge that this would be our last Greyhound bus journey and happy that the ride from San Diego to Los Angeles would only take 3 hours. We had spent many hours on the Greyhound buses traveling from place to place and we have to say that all in all the experience was not at all as bad as we had been led to believe. We arrived back in Los Angeles on Sunday 30 August with just over a week before our flight to Fiji. As we had seen much of Los Angeles when we flew in at the start of our trip we decided to hire a car for a few days and drive some of the State Route that ... read more

We left San Francisco on Saturday 15 August and travelled to San Diego via the Greyhound bus. The journey took 11 hours in total and it was an overnight ride so we slept for most of it and arrived in San Diego at 10.00am the following day. We had booked into a hostel called Lucky D's Hostel which was only a short walk from the Greyhound station and we chose it as it was cheaper than USA Hostels (a well known chain of hostels and where we stayed in San Francisco). It also had free waffles and cereal for breakfast every morning, free dinners 3 times a week and a nice kitchen so you could make yourself anything any time of the day. As soon as we arrived at the hostel we knew we had made ... read more

Whilst in San Francisco we knew we had to go over the Golden Gate bridge so we figured the best way to do this would be to hire bikes for the day. We hired bicycles from 'Blazing Saddles' and we now know why they are called that! After a day of riding, you will have a 'blazing saddle!...... We got up nice and early and headed down to Fisherman's Wharf where the bike hire company is located. We collected our bikes at around 9am and headed off towards Golden Gate Bridge. The weather was perfect, cool first thing and then lovely and sunny in the afternoon. The ride to Golden Gate Bridge took around an hour and once we got there we stopped to get a couple of pictures as the view was incredible. You could ... read more

As soon as we arrived in San Francisco on the Greyhound bus we knew we were going to like it in this city... The bus ride from Las Vegas to San Francisco took 15 ½ hours in total and we were extremely tired from the long journey but very excited to be in San Francisco. Las Vegas was fun but after just over 3 ½ weeks it was certainly time to move on from there! If we had stayed there much longer, Matt may have bankrupted us! San Francisco has a very relaxed vibe about it. San Francisco is just San Francisco; no gimmicks. It doesn't need to sell itself - it is what it is. It has a really nice atmosphere. Las Vegas is great but there its all about being big, bold and outrageous, ... read more

Las Vegas

From Los Angeles, we booked tickets via the internet for the Greyhound bus and headed to Las Vegas on 20 June. We also pre-booked a couple of nights in a Travelodge in Las Vegas (which if you can believe it worked out cheaper than a hostel). The bus ride was 6 hours - with a 30 minute stopover in Barstow. We arrived in Las Vegas around 4pm and were met with a wall of heat! We grabbed our backpacks and headed for the nearest bus stop. It took a while (plus a lot of walking and moaning from Dianna!) to find the right road and the right bus to take us up the 'strip' to where we were staying. We took the 'deuce' bus which is a 24 hour bus that runs up and down the ... read more

Well, after an emotional farewell, we found ourselves on the plane headed for Los Angeles on Monday 15 June 2009. We were met with amazing surprises at the airport - not only Dianna's nephew George dressed as Batman and her Brother in Law dressed as Superman but also Matt's best friend Dean had managed to get an upgrade for us through his Dad. We flew 'World Traveller' which was brilliant! Big seats, foot rests, TV's on the back of the seats, amazing food and complimentary drinks throughout the flight. We definitely did not feel like we were backpacking on a budget!! A BIG thank you to Dean and his Dad for the upgrade and thank you to Mum, John, Claire, Sharon, Mark, Karla and George for coming to the airport to see us off. We landed ... read more
